  • An interlude video exploring one of the recurring themes of my India trip: religion.
Sitting on the banks of the Ganges in the holy city of Varanasi, I try to dissect my thoughts on Hinduism and draw from them lessons which can be applied to all the religious traditions of the world. Lessons around our relationship with the primaeval past, worship of the fundamental elements like fire and water.
Do you agree or disagree with my thoughts? Let me know in the comments section!
Several months ago I wrote an essay on my history and relationship with Hinduism which may be of interest. Here it is: / why-i-am-a-hindu-and-w...
I also wrote an essay further exploring the thoughts voiced in this video. Here it is: / on-the-banks-of-the-ga...

Cows were holy in old Irish and British peganisum as well. Indo European pegans belived that first man survived by drinking cows milk. So cows were considered holy from ireland to india. The issue is except india none of this old culture survived anywhere.

Cow milk , infact any kind of animal milk (except maybe goat milk) is not suitable for people of europe or americas and any person of blood types A and O (including both +ve and -ve ones).
However, north india and other neighbouring regions of pakistan and bangladesh whoch has majority people of B blood types have strong culture of consumption of cow milk and not only that many parts of that region have strong consumption trend of hot cow milk as well as mixing hot milk with other things like Tea or coffee or even made as popular sweets.
The consumption of hot milk is widespread among muslim communities from central asia to africa despite the fact that unlike northern half of south asia many of these places do not have people of B blood types as majority people.

@@ABO-Destiny Ya Indians are highly lactose tolerant but in my layman view this has been developed over the years as indians chose to drink cow milk rather than eating cow meat on account of ancient belief. It would have been same for Europeans had they chose similar behaviour. Milk and meat of same animal does not go together.

Pretty good analysis. Hinduism is primeval and very much like tribals, they sing, dance, respect and live in harmony with nature and all living beings. Yet fluidic, open to the extent where it allowed other religions like buddhism, sikhism, Jainism to be born and flourish. Every teaching is through conversations and stories in the scriptures where it encourages question your own self and others for learning, also encourages to look within and experience the supreme reality. When you listen and converse you have an open mind, you learn, grow and accept all. You are a curious, open minded soul. Cheers !

Drawing parallels with abrahmic 'religions' will never work with Sanatam Dharam unfortunately. A few assertions made were not entirely true. While you are in India, seek a guru and submit to it for a few weeks. What you see and experience is great as a per-analysis, but lots more to experience on how deep the Rabbit hole really goes. Thank you for being open and willing to experience.

The Bhartiya(Hindu) format of Duties based society.
    Dharma: Talks about one's liberation.
Jathi: Talks about one's duties towards their community.
Varna: Talks about one's duties towards their occupation.
Kulam: Talking about one's duties towards their family/lineage
The term "caste" is derived from the Latin word "castus," signifying pure, and the Portuguese "casta," meaning lineage. It was utilized by the British to construct a negative narrative about the Sanatan Dharma way of life, employing the concept of caste to categorize society into higher and lower divisions, with the lower castes often being the focus of Christian conversion efforts.

To understand Hinduism is simple. God sends everyone with conscious, with an inate understanding of what is right and wrong. In its essence Hindu Dharma is doing the right thing. Now this could be two completely opposite things for two people in different situations. Basically it is way to understand and follow your counsious. Traditions are not Religion/ Dharma.

@@uncletravellingmatt588 Namaskar, you seem like a good hearted person and it is good to see a westerner has atleast this much idea of Hinduism though the actual name is not Hinduism it is Sanatan Dharm and the very basis of Sanatan Dharm is questioning and
we are happy you are doing that to know. There are many things that you said are right and many are not and let me discuss few of them.
      1) At around 4.48 you said that Hinduism is a kind of early paignism which is partily right because if you understand even the basics of Santan Dharm(Hinduism) you would have known different people in Hinduism worship differently some worship formless god some worship trees, some worship planets, some worship sun, some worship deities some worship animals, some worship nothing and some even denies the existence of any God but all of them considers themselves Hindu.
You himself said in early part of the video that Hinduism feelslike a combination of many religion and yes you grasped it right that main characteristics of Hinduism is tolerance but many times it is considered as weakness of Hindus as an individual an as a society specialy by Muslims and Christians and everytime tolerance limit of Hindu people is crossed by Muslims(mostly) and christinas(less) in Bharat(India) some Hindus are becoming more and more rigid in response(though not motivated by any Hindu teaching or text but by the behaviour or Muslims and christians).
      2) At around 4.59 you said writting of Vedas gave Hinduism an intellectual venier though you also said nobody actually read them because they are mssive so I disagree with you here and humbly suggest you to please read the vedas and then found yourself that
whehter intellectual venier is because of real knowledge or fake. And if it seems hard I suggest you to just reasearch for few years just about the language Sanskrit in which vedas are written and you will find the caliber of this lanuage called Sanskrit and in how many centruries it would have been developed into such a language and then the vedas are written in this laguage so it basicaaly tells us Hindus are not intellectual people
just because of vedas its other way around vedas are intellectual because Hindus were intellectauls even many thousand years before the vedas and had the Islamic invaders not burnt the many-many massive libraries of Hindus we would have many more other awesome book of knowledge like vedas.
      3) At around 5.20 you said Bhakti Tradition is like sufi thinking but within the Hindu context which is exactly the other way around in fact Sufi thinking is which copied Hindu Bahkti Tradition style in Islamic context. This propogated to Arab nations with the merchants and the books they used to take from India who used to come to India for trade and then some of the sufis requested the Arab kings to attack India to loot and plunder the immense wealth these sufis have seen in India with Indian people and specially in Hindu temples. If you think it is not like this then chceck out the Indian History and try to find how many millions of people killed by sufis in the name of God or in the name of sufism and also try to find How many people killed by Bhakti Tradition people infact you will find the people from Bhakti tradition have given their lives to save lives of people, animals, trees or jungles.
There are many other things I can talk as well like you are talking about caste system which is actually VARN system which actually used to be fluid but first islamic Invaders and then Brtishers turned it into a non fluid firm caste system and due to this in last hundreds of years it has enetered into Hindu pyschi as well and yes in last 200 to 300 odd years we have a major issue of caste system but as hindus are finding their roots again we are going to fix this as well, infact it is already fixed quite a lot nowadays caste system is not as prevalent as it was few decades back and we are aspiring it to change it to like the old fluid system which used to called VARN system in which a person's varn is fluid and decided by his or her abilities and his or her control ober their senses. You can say somewhat similiar not totally to today system like today mostly an engineer gets a enginner job and a scientist gets a scientist job.
Hope I have not offended you, stay healthy be as you are keep questioning and keep on evolving. God's grace be upon you.. Namaskar.🙏

I think the mistake you are making is trying to find sanatan dharma in one book or trying to find a set of rules, sanatan dharma always had different way of thoughts like Samkhya, Nyaya or Vedanta and many more. Though people nowaday constantly try to compare it with other Abramic religions, which doesn't make any sense. And sanatan Dharma as has always talked about consciousness and universe in general which make more sense as even from a scientific perspective, which for me personally is something I like to find the cross section between spirituality and science. Also do research varna system before , as there seems to be this misconception that both Varna system and caste system is one and the same, one is choice based and other is based on the birth, which was created way later , it seems.
In any case , be a seeker and the more knowledge you will gain , safe travels.

Very nice. While the caste system definitely exists, Indians really have jati/varna system which is thousands of castes - and yes, many are largely endogamous. The system is old and being stripped away organically with increased urbanisation. Just like Hinduism itself, it is more complicated than a simple 4/5 tiered system.
You could search for Razib Khan's caste system analysis, he is a geneticist based out of USA

I would want to replace the word Caste with 'Community'
Hindu culture is heterogeneous, this is why caste exists and can't be eradicated in India. This thing is not understood by many foreigners. Instead of eradicating casts(which can never happen) we should focus on eradicating caste based discrimination and not the caste itself.
People have to understand, caste system is not bad, discrimination based on caste is bad. Different castes have their own traditions and culture. In fact it's only because of different castes that Indian culture survived all those invasions as a whole. The invaders destroyed one culture, then they found 10 more, they destroyed those 10, then they realized there are thousands more. This is how indian culture survived otherwise all great monotheistic cultures like Persia, Egypt etc are already wiped out.
But hum Indians ko padha padha kar hamara dimaag kharab kar diya gaya hai ki caste kharab hai. Arranged Marriage ke upper bhi hume yahi sikhaya gaya hai west dwara ki Arranged marriage kharab hai, Kharab hai and now most Indians do actually believe that Arranged marriages are bad despite the fact that arranged marriages have proved their worth for ages.

8:12 Since Jdism tries to use existing neighboring culture as its foundation, you should investigate that particular Kingdom and its culture. Pharaoh Ramesses II whose mere existence as an actual historical figure who existed in past with actual archaeological records dating him and his accomplishments debunks and de-legitimizes the narrative of Moses and 44years of his exodus and thus the entire basis of all 3 religions of Abraham falls like a house of cards.
Jdism was born out of the canaan tribes worshiping Yahweh who belong to the Canaan pantheon born out jealousy of ancient Egypt and hatred towards their fellow canaan tribes who worshiped other gods. Exodus 34:13.
So if you go by historical evidence It was created around 6th or 5th century BCE and ended with the dissolution of covenant when Romans became the effective ruler supplanting Yahweh authority.

Religion is a western concept. In it, you have a User Manual and you have to follow it blindly. Hinduism is not the name, it is Sanatan Dharma. Sanatan as in Eternal, Dharma as in The Righteous Way of Life(closest translation). Caste system was invented by the Britts to divide us, what we used to have was the Varna system. Varna is defined by the profession or occupation you undertake. It has got nothing to do with your birth. But the Britts made it look like so due to their ulterior motives. Funny you are in Varanasi and you are unaware of the basic concepts of Sanatan Dharma. Please talk to a learned pandit and kindly take off your western spectacles, otherwise your judgement will be prejudiced. Empty the cup. Alakkh Aadesh 🙏☺️

This is very superficial understanding of "Dharma". Yes a good theory of the origin, but still a theory.
Primodial almost means it is not developed enough. Ignoring all the aspects of meditation, Yoga etc.
The choice of the words is "Morphed" is another synonym of "changed" but leaves out the aspect of "Evolution".
And has not been able to capture the main thing where is has referred to "Mysterious" rather than being able to pinpoint.
Also the theory of the prime elements and Sun and Mon is not limited to worship. Rather they are the basis of our existence, like our system of medicine where tri-dosha are based on the element....and then it builds into much advanced disciplines.
Praying of Sun and Moon it not limited to worshipped, but rather Surya Siddhant, advanced astronomy, or Jantar mantar etc.
And has totally ignored aspects of Upanishads.
People forget, Sanatana Dharma are a "Supermarket" of Spirituality or rather a GPS, where, wherever one stands in ones spiritual journey, Hinduism has something to offer without being "Anti" to any other faith or segment.

Evil of bharat has been few sold out indians and abrahamic faiths else bharatvwoyld hv been the most peaceful and prosperous country which once it was 1000 years back
