I'll go a step further and say that I've benefited massively from watching drummer tutorials. It teaches you how to think like a drummer, even if you aren't one at heart.
Yes same here. I have a few projects in motion and I've been watching tutorials, mainly of Gavin Harrison. He's an amazing drummer. But it's helped me think like a drummer, because im a guitar player.
Misha, I just want to say personally thank you, because your videos on drum programming started me on my songwriting journey. 4 years ago, when you did those Programming Tips videos for Top Secret Audio, and the way you showcased Cubase and the drum editor, it really opened up my eyes on how easy it can be to make drum tracks. I had no idea before. Now, some years later after seeing those videos, I have completed two full albums, and it's all thanks to those initial building blocks that you provided. Without that, I would have struggled to get started and not knowing how to create a proper rhythm sections from scratch, and not relying on stock drum fills and grooves. So thanks again.
More drummers need to learn this. I program all of my stuff in Guitar Pro. When a drummer programs correctly and knows which hands play what, you could adjust the intensities accurately, so your midi could sound as real as possible. Example, my left hand for my snare hits harder than my right. Everywhere else, my right hand hits harder. Knowing those little details will help boost the uniqueness of your music. Great work, GGD.
This is great advice for beginners. Always keep in mind what limbs are available for writing drum parts. And even though I know this already, I watched this video JUST IN CASE. You never know when a little morsel of new information will show up.
considering Misha has his own Tone Forge amp sim through JST. i HIGHLY doubt they are targeting any of JST's consumers at all man. thats just ridiculas to even say. i will how ever agree that Misha is one hell of a marketing salesman and on that note who cares that he is constantly promoting everything he is involved with when he doesnt make enough money to live off of from periphery alone.
I didn't mean they're targeting DF's customers, just that they're kinda following their track, expanding from just samples to full on plugins. That might mean we'll get a standalone GGD plugin at some point as well :)
Is that what the getgood drums program looks like? If not, what is it you are using? I currently have FL studio, but would really like to use get good drums for composing some of my own original music.
Hell yeah Gotta think of what just the four limbs can do I watched a bunch of drum fill tutorials and programmed the on screen drum tabs into a beats template in my DAW to drag and drop - I save them to drag and drop at the end of certain sections of my songs. Presonus Studio One has a cool humanize feature that staggers the beats and adjusts the velocities of the hits... I like to adjust velocities as I lay notes down, but yeah- it gets pretty cool. I copied all of 66Samus’ drum beat examples into a template file too, to drag and drop for songs Pretty awesome stuff LETS SEE IF I LEARN ANYTHING NEW HERE
I always liked fills to be transition cues for the listener. At least where the big ones are concerned. Smaller fills that only accent certain things with the rest of the band just adds scenery to the drive. So you don't feel like your driving through Kansas or Southeastern Wyoming.
Hi, I have a question about GGD Modern&Massive pack. When I use cymbals, in playback the same one cymbal plays differently with volume varying from normal to barely heard. I suppose this is for creating a natural feeling but for my purposes I need less variety. But I did not find how to setup it. Is it possible?
They're tracking guitar parts and matt is learning (and I believe tracking soon) the drums parts. Spencer uploaded a clip of some of his tracks on his instagram.
if periphery every does a tour date or 2 in nollys hometown, would it be possible to have him for a guest appearance? if he was willing.. that would be cool, miss that guy.
Why do programmed ride cymbals never sound realistic? Don't get me wrong, GGD are my fave because they sound the most thicc, yet natural. But no matter the vst, I've always struggled with making ride cymbal hits sound realistic despite toying with timing and velocity. Any tips on this?
No drum sampler is able to simulate cymbal wash properly, as that's impossible with one shot samples. Simply alternating samples every once in a while is not enough.
That's because what makes a cymbal sound like a cymbal is lacking and cannot be captured with one shot samples. And this goes for every cymbal, not just rides.
i get writing drums that are playable in real life but at the same time when it comes time to bring a song to my band i cut out all my midi drums because you know.. my real drummer wanna write too lol for me personally programmed drums are for nothing accapt helping me write riffs so i can hear them in context
Haha, I believe he meant 'tidbit' which usually refers to a snack or treat. In this context it probably means that the fill adds a little something special to the end of the phrase.
Keep in mind which drums are closer to each other as well, you don't want your drummer trying to reach all the way across the kit in a 32nd note's time and then back again or anything. We're people, not machines :)
matt steps in "thats just not right man.. how about something like didla buh didla buh dat n dat n patta patta pat n pat n ratta flam!" then thinks to himself heh that should keep em busy
Absolutely, but as a writing tool this is indispensable! Really helps communicate ideas to Matt, our drummer, then ultimately we track live drums. If we didn't have access to incredible drum rooms and engineers, or if we didn't have an incredible drummer, we would probably just stick to programmed drums!

Agree. One will need 9 drummer tutorial and 1 (Outta 10) tut related to working with software to be effectively able to program one.

Misha is seriously one of the most helpful people on learning the basics on this stuff.

Thanks for this. Everyone starts somewhere and when people like you share your knowledge, it only helps grow the metal community.
Love this! Thanks for the insight! I realized that having realistic drum fills, and goood velocities.
GGD compressor?
LIKE WTF !?!?!?!
Ok, now they're really going after Drumforge

Thank you for the half second snippet of a new Periphery song(?) at the end!
Right???
Yeah that's totally a new song... or is it?
sounds like Ji
what about MeMe FiLls
God he's everywhere
Awesome video! Thanks Misha!

So helpful. Please do one on how to program metal drums!! I saw your drum programming basics video and it really helped. More please!!!
I struggle programming midi drums. Really helpful thanks.
WE NEED A GETGOODBASS!!!
There is a plugin called Loki Bass by Solemn Tone.. It is not Mishas company but it is Nollys sampled bass
+1

Great video mate! Thank you.
Misha's edits are always true to form, lmao.
So what software was exactly used to program Animals as leaders’ first album? 🤔
If they did program the drums, they most likely used Superior Drummer or something
iirc superior 2.0
But which Superior Drummer libraries? Did he use layering?
Great sounds and tips! Thank you for this video Misha :)
João I love you man
Love this!
This is great like the last drum tutorial you did a while ago, I own the first GGD is this what is used w the new modern pack for this video?

Just found this vid... 'a drum fill has 3 main roles (rolls)"... Good pun!!
And good vid. Thanks!
I know it's a stupid question but HEY Misha what desk is that? Been looking to downsize mine to something like that
Did we just see a peek of a GGD plugin? 0:46
Where?
0:46
The blue and red compressors he closes right after that ;)
I don't know how in your right mind do you see the Kontakt instrument, but not the plugins right after that.
Yep, definitely a compressor, even the name of the plugin says GGD Compressor :)
How do you get a sustained snare roll build up?
Love those guitars!
I am getting no sounds in GM Map on cubase !! Can anyone please help me out ?
You make it looks so easy...
Misha, is there any update on Periphery? Haven't heard anything from you guys in months :(
They're tracking guitar parts and matt is learning (and I believe tracking soon) the drums parts. Spencer uploaded a clip of some of his tracks on his instagram.
i hope matt is willing to sacrifice his legs for the greater good and do those sweet double kick parts they showed in the previews
I sooooo love the ggd Tom Sustain!
real lowkey sneak peak of the ggd plugins "lets just close this stuff up right here"
Thanks a lot !
nice thank you, helpful as always
Loved it ❤
if periphery every does a tour date or 2 in nollys hometown, would it be possible to have him for a guest appearance? if he was willing.. that would be cool, miss that guy.
Ending shoulda been those 4 chugs but with falsetto Misha singing “get good d-drums” in time with the beats.

@@crimsun7186 Yeah exactly, man. But even the transient sounds always sounds kinda off and I can't put my finger on it
That's because what makes a cymbal sound like a cymbal is lacking and cannot be captured with one shot samples. And this goes for every cymbal, not just rides.
Is this a tycho song you're working on?
It’s gonna be on his next single… goes by the name of “Bulb”
Camera used?
Does anyone know what kind of headphones is Misha wearing?
Sennheiser HD800, a reference-grade model intended for professionals. Try not to have a heart attack when you look at the price.
Great job man!!! Cheers, Jeroen Simons, Independent, ex- Epica.
I think its very important to think as a drummer but also as a musician (know everyones parts guys/girls!!) for creating contex in the music...;)
Thanks for watching!
DON'T THINK I DON'T SEE THAT HM-2 IN THE BACKGROUND MISHA
i get writing drums that are playable in real life but at the same time when it comes time to bring a song to my band i cut out all my midi drums because you know.. my real drummer wanna write too lol for me personally programmed drums are for nothing accapt helping me write riffs so i can hear them in context
Had to come and listen to some guitars
How did you get that sustain on the toms?
On the floor tom
The guru Toms sustain is insane
Bare knuckle pickups
Horizon devices precision drive
It's the deep cut away on his Jackson
That floor tom resonates for DAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYS
Really Bob Rossing these drum fills.
thank you so much!!
I don't know english very well. What "little tit beat" is on 1:23?
Haha, I believe he meant 'tidbit' which usually refers to a snack or treat. In this context it probably means that the fill adds a little something special to the end of the phrase.
@@moogle. thanks, man :)
Ugh I wish logic pro had a drum editor like this!
Hyper editor! It’s called something else in logic pro x i think but same deal
Dude where have you been??
It's like watching a video game playthrough haha, I think this is the only game that misha play 😂😂
He used to be obsessed with destiny. Even remade Sepiks Primes theme, and they decided to put it in the game.
Keep in mind which drums are closer to each other as well, you don't want your drummer trying to reach all the way across the kit in a 32nd note's time and then back again or anything. We're people, not machines :)
Did you sell your Opals?
JohnnyAshtray Yup, got the amphions and never looked back!
13:49min...
Misha >
GGD COMPS CONFIRMED HOLY SHIT
Funny that Periphery is still in touch with Nolly.
It's like he's never out of the band.
He's doing production and bass on P4
is this pack only rimshots? I'm so sick of them lol
Do Infant Annihilator and Rings of Saturn drum fills count as realistic lol
Maybe not realistic from a natural point of view, but appropriate to the goal of the music!
My drummer has 3 arms ok?
Misha sounds like the Bob Ross of MIDI drums… DAW Ross
🙏
"thats just kinda funny..." lol
So many messed up video effects I thought I was watching a studio update for a minute
Lol your a nut. Thanks bro
i think hes talking about drum fills here
matt steps in "thats just not right man.. how about something like didla buh didla buh dat n dat n patta patta pat n pat n ratta flam!" then thinks to himself heh that should keep em busy
I like what he is saying. Good info. But he keeps making the assumption that only one drummer is present. Nothing is impossible
I hate this shit. Can we just have people who strive to play drums?
Absolutely, but as a writing tool this is indispensable! Really helps communicate ideas to Matt, our drummer, then ultimately we track live drums. If we didn't have access to incredible drum rooms and engineers, or if we didn't have an incredible drummer, we would probably just stick to programmed drums!
@@MishaMansoor Misha I know this comment is old, but we’re the drums programmed on Album P1
