Ok, it’s not that it “tore up the arena”, holes and tears are quite easy to patch up iirc, the issue is denting and warping the floor when it hits it, these take more time to repair and straighten out.
Also worth noting they banned might be the wrong terminology, the team and robot is still “allowed” to apply, it’s just that Battlebots will reject them on the basis that they stall production too much and too consistently.

We will never have another robot like Deep 6, it was such a crazy concept but it ended damaging the battlebox way to much. And Triton wich was basically a horizontal Deep 6 was a huge disappointment, Deep 6 was the robot that personified the chaos of battlebots and it'll never be replaced

Deep Six is a contender for my favorite battlebot, the raw power held in that spinner, and the sheer audacity to go "What if we pushed verts to the most destructive limit possible, at the expense of all other function," truly a marvel. Not to mention the effect Deep Six had on fights, it was often a shower of shrapnel, but the fight Deep Six had with Ribbot might be my favorite just for how tense it was with Ribbot desperately hunting for angles as Deep Six just tried to keep it's weapon forward and at least 1 wheel on the ground.
And I'd like to mention that I think the story behind Deep Six being rejected from Championship 7 was a little more complicated. The builder, driver, designer, and captain of the team behind Deep Six, Dustin Esswein was not going to attend Championship 7 regardless, and losing the man who kind of established the team definitely hurt their chances of being accepted, that along with the robots history with damaging the box I think just led whoever makes the final call for who gets accepted to see Deep Six as not worth the slot. Also keep in mind is Championship 7 had only 50 bots instead of the previous year's 60, so standards were also just higher in general. Like Deep Six wasn't the only returning team who was rejected, the same thing happened to Ice-wave.
Now team Overboard did manage to get a robot in with Triton, and from what I understand (so this may be wrong please don't take this too serious) Triton was kind of accepted last minute after news broke about Ray Billing's hand injury and him being unable to run Tombstone. Bradley Hanstad basically went "Hey we can make a really badass horizontal that can maybe fill the void tombstone leaves :)"

It isn't surprising that contestants would eventually conceive of battle bots that would exceed the safety parameters of the arena(s) and reasonable-cost-of-repairs-limits to same. One could consider the "banning" a sort of badass achievement in it's own right. Some lucky fans got to observe the carnage for as long as it lasted.

  • @DanSwart

I see a few others have mentioned the same thing, but it all comes down to the scale of damage here. Tombstone and the others peel up the top layer of flooring and smash up the walls and displays, which is (relatively) inexpensive to repair for BB and takes very little time. Deep Six tore a gouge several inches deep in the lower flooring reinforcements, which was a substantially larger issue in terms of cost and time. If it were only a one-time incident, the organizers probably would’ve let Deep Six off with a warning and a fine, but it had already done the exact same thing in a test box previously. As such, keeping Deep Six around risks continued damage to critical flooring components (which were originally designed to be virtually indestructible btw), so they won’t allow them to return sadly. I truly wish I could see a match between DS and tombstone, since I know Ray would absolutely love the carnage that would inevitably ensue.

Yeah I reckon it was difficult decision to outlaw deep six ..but double KO bots like deep six are kinda a novelty it unfair any serious contenders having to fight a weapon like this...and the safety of the crew and every one at battlebots it reputation will come crashing down with this also and damage the future of the sport.
I believe the banning could be lifted after more balance between bots and weapons and arena.
I honestly believe this community really hate having to make decisions like this as innovation got the sport to where it is today.

Bots are accepted into the competition for two reasons: their ability to draw a crowd and attract advertising. If the producers feel that they will not do this, they won't get into the competition.
Many bots have disappeared from the competition, not just Deep Six. Many more have been submitted to the competition and never accepted. Floor damage isn't that big a deal unless it is happening every time the bot is unleashed. The repairs take time and money but they're happy to eat that cost if the bot that did it is bringing in lots of advertising dollars.
In addition, bots like Tombstone are so entrenched in the competition that to remove them would mean a lot of fans would stop watching. Newer and less recognised bots don't get the same consideration.
    It's all about money.

Ray maniacally laughs as Tombstone continues destroying the floor.

  • @bami2
    @bami2 5 месяцев назад +2

0:39 Tombstone ripping up the floor here isn't really relevant since it happened in season 2 or 3 of the reboot (along with the famous match between Duck and Cobalt), because of that they replaced the entire floor in 2020 making it thicker and out of single thick (1x1/2 inch) sheets instead of multiple layered thinner sheets (3x1/8th inch) of mild steel. Tombstone wouldn't be able to do this anymore and you can see it with bots like Deathroll, Monsoon, Uppercut and Ripperoni that have pretty comparable weapons in terms of raw energy that they just mostly bounce off maybe denting the floor. The latter shouldn't be a problem with the upcoming championship (whenever they get around to recording that) since they plan to weld all the floor panels together so any bent panel won't create a bunch of ridges between the panels for forks and wedges to get stuck on.
Deep Six however kept destroying the metal wall guards around the motors for the screws (from having the weapon mounted way higher as those other bots so when reversing into the wall it would hit it from above instead of the side as most verts do), testboxes as well as this thicker floor, not just denting it but actually slicing through the entire floor if it toppled over. This is both more dangerous since shrapnel can go through the floor and hit stuff like the killsaw mechanisms or cables that run under the floor and those repairs take way more time and thus a lot more costly when you have a filming crew just standing by. I think they were also worrying what would happen if Deep Six directly hit the polycarb walls as it could potentially just shatter it.
They tried to nerf Deep Six specifically by limiting the allowed weapon weight to 80lbs from 110 for non full body spinners but even that wasn't enough to prevent it from severely damaging the arena almost every time it fought and I think for Dustin being limited in weapon weight kinda defeated the whole point in Deep Six.

  • @mattheusspoo

the problem with deep 6 is that his spinner is vertical. if it was a horizontal spinner like tombstone it would probably be not going thru all of that. Vertical spinners are way more destructive and uncontrollable. Plus if it hits the ground or a wall, it will hit it with full force, while a horizontal spinner would always hit the protected area of the wall, or hit only partially the ground. Imagine if that hit tombstone did to the arena floor was done with a perfectly vertical blade instead of how it hit the ground, in a very steep diagonal.
