Just sent my first voiceover audition. It was nearly ready to go when I realised I didn't know how to slate! So this was really helpful, thank you!

The "bleeps" made me laugh harder than I should. Thank you for all the videos you do. They are so helpful and give me so much to think about.

Mike, I really enjoy your tutorials/reviews/points of view. Love the unassuming humility and am looking forward to digging into your youtube body of work. My dad was in radio for many years and I've been told the voice runs in the family. I hope to reach out to you as I become more involved in trying my luck at the voice over game.
    Best regards,
    Mike

This was helpful! I just watched a video where the slate was super in depth and I was worried I was doing mine wrong. But this is exactly how I do my slates. Thank you!

Hey Mike, Love your vids. You're a great inspiration. I've also been doing VO for a long time. On a side note, today is my last day at a local ABC-FOX affiliate. I've done lots of VO work while in the biz. At 57 years of age, I find I need more activity and will drive for FedEx for a time. I've decided to reassemble my VO studio at home to supplement my income. I'm already getting offers, which is encouraging. I've auditioned a lot in the past and have had some success, but I'm striving for a better closing percentage. Here's a question about your auditions: Do you send the audio flat, or do you add minimal effects to enhance the audio so it's more pleasing to the client's ears?

Hi Nelson! I typically have a default chain of FX on my auditions to make sure the audio is clean. A gate to handle any movement noise and errant breaths, some mild compression and limiting to make sure my levels are good without having to reset them every time. but generally I try to make the audio as close to original as I can, I don't really "sweeten" it up much. That said, it's the same chain I use for final audio sent to a client or engineer, so it is representative of the sound they can expect from me for the final takes.

Thanks for sharing, Mike. I knew one VO guy a few years ago that swore by sweetening up the audition audio, because a flat audio audition, quite honestly, lacks personality and presence. It increased his closing ratio considerably over other talent. The downside is that the engineer on the other end doesn't have much to work with in terms of compression, EQ, etc., because you've already applied it, and he or she may ask for a dry read (without effects).

Hey Mike, do you ever or would you ever advise someone to slate in the voice of the character that they're auditioning for? Thanks!

Naming each project into subdirectories...... I absolutely hate computers and editing and this is why I am failing voiceover. How do I even know what I don't know. I ABSOLUTELY HATE LEARNING EDITING but everyone and their grandma can do it apparently! just open up your laptop and edit away using all the hundreds of tools!! super easy!!!
