- Most of us can’t get a professionally produced demo right out of the gate. So, what do we do? We make it ourselves. If done right, it can get you tons of work until you’re ready to get one professionally done. In this video, I’ll teach you exactly what you need to do to create your very first demo so that you can get started working as a voice over artist right away.

I totally agree, thanks so much. Very generous!
Thank you! :)
This video spoke to my soul, lol. I hear I have a "soothing and relaxing" voice and was strongly leaning toward getting started in narration, eLearning, documentary, maybe business sorts of work. Super pleased to hear that I'm aiming high by aiming low. :P
I come from a completely unrelated field. So from the bottom of my heart. I thank you very much for going over the ABC's of this kind of work. Thank you for being kind enough to share your experience and your expertise.
Bill, I have been watching your video's for quite a while now.
I appreciate everything you share and having just completed my studio I'm ready to build my first DIY demo...
and you drop this video. Perfect timing. Thank you.
I would hire you just based on your shirt. Thank you for bringing crustations to the forefront of the public conversation. well done.
Thanks huge for sharing about entry-level platforms like Fiverr, ACX, and Upwork. I joined each of these months ago, and the reward and experience has been decent.
And for clarifying about NOT submitting DIY or beginner work to Agencies until they are professionally engineered. Considering an actor friend also stated this, clarifying only professionally audited or compiled pieces go to an agent (when you've accumulated enough clips :)
So much truth to not submitting DIY work to agencies.
This is so comprehensive yet brief. Thanks so much, super helpful!
Thank you so much for this! You've given me some bite sized steps I can take, and that's perfect!
Bill, where do we find the transcripts of audiobooks to record for the demo? Do we just use books we like or is there a database online?
I would like to know this aswell.
Im guessing we cant use the audition scripts on acx from rights holders for a demo.
My plan is to use some of my favorite older books and things that I wrote.
@@molittrconsidering this as well
i listened better and he said theyre on ispottv and youtube for commercial
This is increadibly helpfull, great video with lots of good info.
The thought of doing voice over has been bugging me at the back of my head for AGES now. A few people have recommended me to try and I think I'm going to give it a shot.
Thanks for the help :)
Thank you so much, Bill! I've been really kicking myself for not having a demo and missing out on opportunities I find on Twitter. Maybe this would help me get my foot in the door for some great gigs! Gonna scour some copies and books to read now.
Bill, that's undoubtedly some valuable advice not just for starters but even for people who're already in the industry. Hope to see more good content from you. Thank you. Btw, I loved the sound quality you're getting from your voice booth.👍😊
This is really great information and I want to thank you for being so generous with your power/knowledge and sharing it with us! We need more hero’s like you sir! Thank you so much for this priceless info!
I enjoy reading aloud.... it has helped me pronounce words correctly and use proper enunciation. Im not fluent but I love reading in Spanish and French.. maybe I should consider this format.
Bill, thank you so very much for your willingness to share information regarding voiceover. This is much needed and you made it simple. I will look for other videos.
Just wanted to say thank you for all your advice and motivation. Just finished the arduous task of recording and editing my audiobook and commercial demos and finally have them posted on my Upwork profile and website. Feeling optimistic for the future. :)
Thank you for your advice. I am an aircraft mechanic for a regional airline. People at work and my family have told me for years I should do voice over work. I am ready to make a DIY demo tape.
You have a great channel my man. Thanks for the info.
I took 5 minutes for you to get started, but it was very concise and well done. Thank you. Your advice will be helpful, I'm sure.
Advice actually starts @6:02
Great info!
great job!!! i thumbed it, but how much for each audio book on an entry level basis , just a range? that would help provide us with transparency, any example will do? thanks!
THE BEST advice I have heard on the subject. Thank you so much. If I start this and start making money, I'll look for you to show my appreciation. 👍🏾
The pandemic has made me decide on a career change. I don't like how my natural voice sounds on recordings, but all my life I've been told I have a radio voice... we'll see!
Thank, Bill! This is great advice for beginners. All the best.
Every time I watch your new video, I become more knowledgeable and educated in voice over.
As always, thanks a lot Bill.
You are the best my freind.
That's fantastic! I try to have all my videos be super informative. Thanks for watching! :-)
THANK YOU FOR HELPING ALL OF US BILL!!
You're welcome!! :-)
Great video! I am in the process of trying my hand at voiceovers to earn extra income. Thanks for all the great advice.
This is the best video I could ever find. Thank you so much ♥ You're doing the difference.
Bravo to You Bill, once again, for such genuine encouragement and help to us Newbies!! Sharing, sharing, sharing👍🏻
I immediately after seeing this had to watch it. This is more sound advice, Bill, thank you!
Best Free Consultation! How do I know if my voice is pleasant to listen to or suitable for this type of job?
Thank you for this Bill! I'm trying to get back to work and am very interested in audiobook narration. Your videos are a great asset!
Thanks Bill! I'm excited to start!
Thank you for sharing your expertise. I very much enjoy learning from your videos. Very useful content.
Excellent advice and explanation! Thanks once again Bill!
Amazing! Thank you. Question though… Don’t you have to have some sort of copyright on something in order to read it? Or is it ok for demo purposes?
Thanks for the video Bill. I'm just getting started. I have all my equipment - next is the demos. I will follow your instructions. I was born in Australia so I still have a bit of an accent. Hoping this won't go against me.
How should you record your demo? On what device? With what equipment?
Excellent. Thank you very much for that information, it's worth it’s weight in gold. I've been watching a lot of videos on voice overs, this has been the best so far. Very informative very inspirational. Thank you again.
Thanks Bill, some great info here. Lots of confusion on where/how to start and this certainly helps!
Hello Bill and Thank you so much for creating this video! I got a lot out of it and you've given me a clear lit path to go with. There is so much information out there for beginners and I didn't know where to start.
I fully watched this, thanks for all the advices.
Will be taking this advice to heart! Thank you! How can I actually record the demo and put it together? I have no equipment. Well, I have headphones with a mic.
Thank you so much for putting this info out there, it’s really helped and encouraged me!! 🙏
What an amazing video. Thank you so much for the direction. I have been feeling lost on how to start this. 😅
Glad I Subscribed. Fantastic!
I'm glad too. Thanks! :)
Thank you! Once the D.I.Y. is complete does one send whole portfolio to potential clients/platforms?
Bill u r the best, your advices are so genuine and you shared your experiences with us which was so helpful, thank you, how can we sign up for ur classes?
Thank you so much for all of these gems! Would Backstage be ok to put a DIY demo? Thanks!!
You just made me feel a whole lot more confident less pressured. Because I was thinking we had to do make up voices. Do you have any advice about that? Creating characters?
Thank you!
This is very informative. Thank you, Bill.
If I do the recording myself what computer program do you suggest? I know some of them like Adobe Audition are expensive. That's what I used years ago when I worked in Radio.
What you mentioned here was two different demos. What about an over-all, general demo with all kinds of VO? Is that acceptable?
There isn't some sort of copywright infringement when you speak words written by companies, especially when it is for commercial use? I don't want to get booted from fiverr. Thank you for your guidance.
This is amazing I am subscribing this was so helpful thank you and I am looking forward to more content
You mention getting started with audio books, but where would you go to get that work? would you start on something like fiverr or is there somewhere more useful?
that's a memorable name Bill DeWees thanks for the informative video
Hi Bill. I'm an Architect and am working full time, but I'm looking for a side-jig career that I can segway into when I retire. My whole life random people have asked me if I was a Radio DJ... I have a deep voice and sing quite a bit. I even won a contest with a local radio station, got to be a guest DJ for 1 hour on a Friday night and play my songs I chose... afterwards the show DJ asked me if i was trying to steal their job.LOL you mention being a voice over coach. What do yo charge?
Thank you for your time and advice. God bless:)
Thank you, Bill.
Thank you for inspiring me.
Thank you so much! This is so helpful.
Thanks
Thanks for the great info. I was wanting to know if and when I ever do want to make a pro demo, where would one go to do this?
Thanks a lot bill. Acx I'm on it now😊
Major Props. Been there done that and am on ACX, but OMG! all those past radio stations, promos, dubs, tags and spots...do you use them to show your chops and veteranship?
Very helpful. Thank you!
thank you kind sir
What books can you use as samples? only royalty free or can you record books that are top sellers ?
This was a very helpful video👍
When you record the computer sends it and they put a demo on the computer
What do you think of the company such a voice they trying to get me in . They said classes are about 3 thousand dollars
Thank you so much for your videos!
Thanks for the help.
I want to learn , please.
I am 75 need an at home job. Voice over is something I can do. Have lap top head phones mic need your course to make sure I know how to get paid. Thanks
Can i do a voiceover with my phone??
My Question is, Is it ok to post a trailer I voiced on Fiverr. or would i need the companies permission? I can't find anything that clarifies,
Thank you so much for this invaluable advice, Bill! I am trying to break into the voiceover space, and I have been submitting auditions through Backstage primarily; and I thought I had a good cross-section of demos on my profile; however, I have yet to land a gig in five months of attempts. And I now realize (thanks to your video which I wish I watched five months ago) that’s because I had not done my DIY demos the proper way. I truly appreciate you sharing your expertise with those of us looking to make inroads in the voiceover world. Cheers to you and happy new year!
Thank you for this video, very helpful and informative. I’m curious though- would there be any harm in directly sending a DIY demo to places as well as putting it up on Fiverr?
thx for the insight!
Great video my question is if a beginner spends thousands of dollars to get a professional sounding demo what are they going to do if they get a job? Example if I spent thousands of dollars to get a professional sounding demo that makes me sound like 1 million bucks if I got hired tomorrow I literally would have zero idea how to re-create that other than paying someone to do so because I’m so new and just learning
I took a short "life long learning" course on voice over work from a woman who works at Such a Voice. The mentorship program that includes training/coaching, help with studio set up and then making a pro demo is about $6K... How do you feel like this compares with the industry standard. Do you still do coaching/demos as well?
Hello, Great video!
Where on Amazon do I find the platform, If you have the name that would be great.
Thank you.
Great info!
Thank you Bill!
Hello Bill, what would you suggest for me? Everywhere I go, strangers tell me that I sound just like Dolly Parton. What would you recommend that I do to get started in voice over work?
Well, you could get a blonde wig, strap on some fake boobs and walk around town. Keep us posted!
LOL, I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.
What program would you suggest using to record your demo? I have a PC, if that helps you with your answer.
Thank you.
How do you know if you have the right voice?
Someone told me that there is no such thing as ‘entry level’ pay in voice over work. Was it contrary to be doing ‘entry level voice over’?
thanks so much!!!!
so are you supposed to read both the Books AND commercials, in the demo? I got confused
Hi Liam! A commercial demo and narration demo are two different kinds of demos. You'd want to do reads for each individually.
I'm guessing since it's demonstration purposes, reading from a book off your shelf would suffice, like transcribing a commercial from YT?
Yeah I remember a few short years ago the advice being not to do a DIY demo.
Hi Bill. Been whining about getting nothing off Fiverr for two months. Got a request from a buyer for one of my genres prayer and meditation. It's the first real nibble I've gotten. Now I need to record my DIY demos for Fiverr Audiobooks an Faith Based. And do my demo for ACX. In the meantime, I need to start a read of my late husband's book. Nothing to lose. Listen to your videos every morning. Thank you for all you do. Blessings, Sandra
Thanks Sandra, and congrats!
Thanks a lot bill. Acx I'm on it now😊
Thanks Bill. I'm 47 now, just trying to get started in this with no experience, (although my dad was in radio for 35+ years,) and I have no problem doing audio books, or any voice over work for that matter.
i'd like to hear more about your story and i how i can get into the business , entry level, doing , do you know the pay and how to get started? thanks
