As an asexual Chinese American I’ve never felt more seen. Thank you for making this and sharing your spoken words. It’s strange how queer people have to pick apart every piece of trauma they have experienced in order to justify their sexuality and identity.
I really love how the editing makes subtle moments seem intentional (I say it that way because you've repeatedly said that it was the opposite). It gives your videos the artistic quality many of us love, while keeping the masterful storytelling and authenticity about you that many of us also love. For those that prefer that you stick to food in the same vein as "shut up and dribble," the opportunity to evolve their minds as human beings on the same journey toward the same finish line is their loss. Keep doing you, June - your contribution to our collective life journey is priceless.
I am 55 and still trying to decide if I'm demi or just plain cynical. One thing I know, there is no right or wrong way -- sex is very much what feels good to you and your partner and what works for you both. Many men don't care and I don't waste my time or emotions on them. You'll figure it all out -- even at my age, I'm still learning and evolving. I love this video format and all the 'food' for thought.

What really baffles me about some of those comments and specifically one where she felt the need to basically say “I don’t care about your sexuality I care about your food” shows that she doesn’t care about you, and it shows the acephobia. You talk about yourself so much which I LOVE. So the fact the moment you say you’re ace someone gets upset and says “focus on food” is so tone deaf to the fact you’ve always talked about yourself?? I came upon this by accident. I’m 54. Sometimes I struggle with the length of your longer content videos, and came upon this one by accident. Another thing that I’ve floated in and out of for a long time is asexuality. So I’m going to leave this on and listen, and clean up the house because when I was young, nobody talked about this. I'm going through a very similar thing: food, work, relationships, identity. I like how you poetically wrap food and your approach to food in all of it. The food industry has detached us from our bodies and nature - food is so basic and fundemental but once you start really rethinking food, you rethink EVERYTHING. Your videos are artful. You are probably one of the most honest, intelligent, open people I've ever come in contact with. I love listening to everything you have to say. From cooking to the theory of life. And i think what you said here applies to most people in some realm, no matter how they " identify " I was married twice before to men, Now I have a wife. We have been together since 2005. Married for half that time. She was my best friend first and was openly gay. I never thought I was gay until the day I fell in love with her. Surprise! 🎉 we never know what can happen. But, if we don't listen to ourselves, take a chance to grow or change, nothing happens.

I am late to this train but happy that I found you, June! It's rather annoying that folks thought (and probably still do) they can demand your focus on just cooking as if you are not a multifaceted person and the creator of this channel 🤨I am not asexual (demisexual in the house! LOL) but find it incredibly interesting to learn about other's struggles, ways, and perspectives. And how awesome is it that we can learn about asexuality with some cooking? You are not "a cooking channel" - you are a person who has a RUclips channel, where you can cook whenever you want or talk about something else or, heck, even delete the channel. Not a terribly hard concept to understand but it seems like there are folks who miss this point. Anywho, super happy to have found you and your "trashfood" no recipes/sometimes recipes. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this video. It was thought-provoking & comforting & I think a lot of what you said can help to be more open even outside of the realm of sexuality. I don’t know if it would be of interest to you, but I recently read (listened to) a book I appreciated called “Come As You Are” by Emily Nagoski who’s a sex educator. It taught me a lot about human sexuality and desire that we definitely weren’t taught in sex ed. My upbringing was also very conservative & I’m still in a process of trying to find my own path in a lot of different ways. Wishing you well as you continue to learn and grow and find your own joys. ❤
This vid is not only quenching my thirst for ace talk but also every time you use expired or past “best by date” ingredients in your cooking/baking I feel so much less weird about doing that too. I hate when I look in my pantry and I feel I have to throw something out bc it’s from like a year ago 😅. A lot of time (with dried shelf stable goods and when I’m cooking for myself only) that are past the bbd I use it anyway and it’s usually not that bad at all. So many great things going on here 😇
i felt it so hard when you started talking about the way that your upbringing affected you asexuality. i myself am asexual and i was raised christian fundamentalist, and i do feel that the way i was raised affected me. but i feel like i can't ever talk about it because people will use that to invalidate my asexuality "you're not actually ace, you just need to get therapy to fix you", so in conversations about my asexuality i always end up focusing on the parts that were always there rather than the parts influenced by the puritanical way i was raised. i know that i'm content in my lack of sexual desire and that i don't want it ""fixed"" but i don't want to spend time arguing with other people about that and possibly lead them to believe that asexual people all just need to be fixed. (also i really relate to the period thing, i've also had irregular periods all my life. doctors kept telling me it wasn't irregular and that i just needed to track it better. when i started tracking it, sure enough, it had a range of 12-48 days. i've also just been put on birth control. my current theory is that it has something to do with my thalassemia trait.) also i am in awe and vaguely terrified of your baking skills. i can wing it with cooking but baking scares me, i always follow recipes

I can't help but love your new kitchen! I live in a 120ish year old Sears 'four square' and only have like 6 cabinets in the whole kitchen and no pantry.
I think that finding ones self is the best love story anyone can tell. Trying to put a name to whom someone can be is tricky. I personally believe that everyone is their own self and to just in general respect one another. Absolutely love these new style of videos cause you are amazing!!!

I really appreciate the way you apply this to another part of your identity. I absorbed every bit of this video and I'm so excited to see what else you cook up.
This is wonderful, and beautiful, and it's fantastic to hear anyone's story on how they defy the norm. I personally have a high libido, but am also incredibly demisexual, and it's been something almost every partner of mine has had trouble understanding, because they don't quite understand how I can want sex but still be ace due to my lack of attraction.

As a Gray Ace, in my opinion its about intimacy not sex. People fail to realize that they are two different things. Intimacy is loosely defined as fulfillment of the senses. For lots of people that's what sex does, but for many others like those on the Ace spectrum, sex does not always fill that intimate role. Their fulfillment comes from other things and that's okay. We each seek out intimacy differently and that is what we should understand and celebrate as individuals. But that's just my take.
i don't and haven't ever identified on the ace spectrum. i've also not had trouble understanding how someone could. i think it's like anything else. life. relationships. emotion. physicality. it's all complicated and multi-layered. and June, as always, does a great job here of expressing helpful insights on life , even if you don't specifically relate to all of the subject matter she discusses
I don't think anything is new anymore, but I also don't think we are being bashed into smaller bits than we started with. I think we've been humans for long enough that nothing is new. What is different is who and how stories are told. Every person has their own personal life experience. You are unique in your videos and I appreciate your open and honest life sharing. Everything you said in this video regarding sexuality is totally me. I feel exactly the same way you do in regards to sex and enjoying it like everyone else. It feels good to know there are others like me in the world. I've definitely always felt like there's something wrong with me
Self love and acceptance may take a lifetime if you, like I, have experienced the non acceptance of those you love. Living with judgement, knowing that I failed to meet expectations still leaves me with mental scars. Whoever you are, however you feel , you are more than enough.
You are amazing and brave and just so self-aware. As for the end - you can win by your standards. Eff the idea of societal success - what makes you happy isn't always what is the norm - and how boring is that if everyone was the same? Keep being you and finding what makes you happy and what makes you tick. If anyone can - it's you.
I love this video, it's so well made. At first I thought the suggestion that being raised by religious parents with puritanical values probably contributed to your asexuality was a bit far-fetched. So many people grow up in similar shame-inducing environments and don't turn out ace. But I will remind myself that nobody reacts to something in the same way and every reaction is valid just by being.
Not an easy video to make, I enjoyed the format, thought provoking yet not dry. Can relate with the experience re shame of sex and the tabooness of the subject growing up, really mess a person up. Funniest part is later in life, parents expected grandkids from me!! Lol lol lol.... No sex, no babies....
I have had such a strange ongoing walkabout with my sexuality. After therapy & getting diagnosed as ADHD in my mid-thirties, I found myself scratching my head about my sexual history, understanding that many times I engaged in sex with people I wasn't really sexually attracted to but I loved how the basic function of sex would get my brain to STFU. I'm trying to remember how someone in an online post phrased it but it was "I did it for the neuro transmitters" or something like that. (It honestly tied into impulse control issues too.) Most of the time I couldn't wait to get tf away from the person afterward but I had this guilt that I've since come to realize stemmed from societal shit. Guilt that I should have wanted a relationship with the person. Guilt that my relationships turned out shitty because I tried to force them since sex was involved. It's a whole lot of idk. But at least "I don't know" is the most honest answer I can give others AND myself. It's OK to not know. If you knew, that would be the end of growth & I may not always know what I want but I know I don't want that.
I grew up in christian background and it affected me a lot. Some of the values of course stuck to me and I think are good but other are manipulative and destructive. I' ve learned to listen to my soul and my needs, be as good human as I can to myself and others but on my own terms. I am still in process of healing this religious trauma but it's slowly getting better ❤ Sex shaming, body shaming, "women" shaming is a norm here and it is strongly related to the conservative politics mixed with religion, usually always a bad pairing 🥲 I remember how disgusted of myself I felt in my teens because I had sexual thoughts or desires, because "I'm not gonna go to heaven or a man wont want me", now I can laugh from that but oh my I was f**king brainwashed Edit: You're video answered a lot of my questions I was too shy to ask 😅 Demisexuality is something I didnt expect to realate to. Having a bunch of friends around me who all craved sex all wanted sex but for me I would keep telling people I'm okay being single. But in fact growing up Chinese Canadian was what made it easy to choose to be single. My parents had successfully traumatised me into thinking that sex and physical touch was gross, not important and if I wanted it, I was disgusting. But once I broke out of my own walls and had guilt-free physical intimacy I just slutted out. 😆

Because this moment in time has never been experienced, our government has never been experienced, the expected specific ideals or norms have never been in place until now. I had no idea you and Aaron separated. If possible, I’d love to hear Aaron’s opinion of dating an asexual person. I’m also asexual/gray ace and I’m curious to know how an allosexual partner feels in the relationship. My greatest fear is holding someone I love back because of my sexuality or lack thereof. Or inadvertently making them feel that my sexual peaks are something for them to try and tackle.
sex does release histamines! that’s why there a lot people who have sensory sensitivities who are ace. it super makes sense that you would be sensitive to the histamine release because of your other allergy issues ☺️

I don’t know if it would be of interest to you, but I recently read (listened to) a book I appreciated called “Come As You Are” by Emily Nagoski who’s a sex educator. It taught me a lot about human sexuality and desire that we definitely weren’t taught in sex ed.
My upbringing was also very conservative & I’m still in a process of trying to find my own path in a lot of different ways. Wishing you well as you continue to learn and grow and find your own joys. ❤

i felt it so hard when you started talking about the way that your upbringing affected you asexuality. i myself am asexual and i was raised christian fundamentalist, and i do feel that the way i was raised affected me. but i feel like i can't ever talk about it because people will use that to invalidate my asexuality "you're not actually ace, you just need to get therapy to fix you", so in conversations about my asexuality i always end up focusing on the parts that were always there rather than the parts influenced by the puritanical way i was raised. i know that i'm content in my lack of sexual desire and that i don't want it ""fixed"" but i don't want to spend time arguing with other people about that and possibly lead them to believe that asexual people all just need to be fixed. (also i really relate to the period thing, i've also had irregular periods all my life. doctors kept telling me it wasn't irregular and that i just needed to track it better. when i started tracking it, sure enough, it had a range of 12-48 days. i've also just been put on birth control. my current theory is that it has something to do with my thalassemia trait.) also i am in awe and vaguely terrified of your baking skills. i can wing it with cooking but baking scares me, i always follow recipes

I think that finding ones self is the best love story anyone can tell. Trying to put a name to whom someone can be is tricky. I personally believe that everyone is their own self and to just in general respect one another. Absolutely love these new style of videos cause you are amazing!!!

This is wonderful, and beautiful, and it's fantastic to hear anyone's story on how they defy the norm. I personally have a high libido, but am also incredibly demisexual, and it's been something almost every partner of mine has had trouble understanding, because they don't quite understand how I can want sex but still be ace due to my lack of attraction.

Does the world need this video? Yes. It is so comforting to know that I am not unique, that it's not just a "me thing", that it's not just me.
As a Gray Ace, in my opinion its about intimacy not sex. People fail to realize that they are two different things. Intimacy is loosely defined as fulfillment of the senses. For lots of people that's what sex does, but for many others like those on the Ace spectrum, sex does not always fill that intimate role. Their fulfillment comes from other things and that's okay. We each seek out intimacy differently and that is what we should understand and celebrate as individuals. But that's just my take.

i don't and haven't ever identified on the ace spectrum. i've also not had trouble understanding how someone could. i think it's like anything else. life. relationships. emotion. physicality. it's all complicated and multi-layered. and June, as always, does a great job here of expressing helpful insights on life , even if you don't specifically relate to all of the subject matter she discusses
I don't think anything is new anymore, but I also don't think we are being bashed into smaller bits than we started with. I think we've been humans for long enough that nothing is new. What is different is who and how stories are told. Every person has their own personal life experience. You are unique in your videos and I appreciate your open and honest life sharing. Self love and acceptance may take a lifetime if you, like I, have experienced the non acceptance of those you love. Living with judgement, knowing that I failed to meet expectations still leaves me with mental scars. Whoever you are, however you feel , you are more than enough.

I love this video, it's so well made. At first I thought the suggestion that being raised by religious parents with puritanical values probably contributed to your asexuality was a bit far-fetched. So many people grow up in similar shame-inducing environments and don't turn out ace. But I will remind myself that nobody reacts to something in the same way and every reaction is valid just by being.

I have had such a strange ongoing walkabout with my sexuality. After therapy & getting diagnosed as ADHD in my mid-thirties, I found myself scratching my head about my sexual history, understanding that many times I engaged in sex with people I wasn't really sexually attracted to but I loved how the basic function of sex would get my brain to STFU. I'm trying to remember how someone in an online post phrased it but it was "I did it for the neuro transmitters" or something like that. (It honestly tied into impulse control issues too.) Most of the time I couldn't wait to get tf away from the person afterward but I had this guilt that I've since come to realize stemmed from societal shit. Guilt that I should have wanted a relationship with the person. Guilt that my relationships turned out shitty because I tried to force them since sex was involved.
It's a whole lot of idk. But at least "I don't know" is the most honest answer I can give others AND myself. It's OK to not know. If you knew, that would be the end of growth & I may not always know what I want but I know I don't want that.
I grew up in christian background and it affected me a lot. Some of the values of course stuck to me and I think are good but other are manipulative and destructive. I' ve learned to listen to my soul and my needs, be as good human as I can to myself and others but on my own terms. I am still in process of healing this religious trauma but it's slowly getting better ❤ Sex shaming, body shaming, "women" shaming is a norm here and it is strongly related to the conservative politics mixed with religion, usually always a bad pairing 🥲 I remember how disgusted of myself I felt in my teens because I had sexual thoughts or desires, because "I'm not gonna go to heaven or a man wont want me", now I can laugh from that but oh my I was f**king brainwashed

Thank you June for this video. Thank you for being so honest and vulnerable with us. I remember for the longest time being confused as to what sexuality is until I was in my mid 20's. Having a bunch of friends around me who all craved sex all wanted sex but for me I would keep telling people I'm okay being single. But in fact growing up Chinese Canadian was what made it easy to choose to be single. My parents had successfully traumatised me into thinking that sex and physical touch was gross, not important and if I wanted it, I was disgusting. But once I broke out of my own walls and had guilt-free physical intimacy I just slutted out. 😆

I had no idea you and Aaron separated. If possible, I’d love to hear Aaron’s opinion of dating an asexual person. I’m also asexual/gray ace and I’m curious to know how an allosexual partner feels in the relationship. My greatest fear is holding someone I love back because of my sexuality or lack thereof. Or inadvertently making them feel that my sexual peaks are something for them to try and tackle.
I think this is a convo one needs to have with their own partner(s).
sex does release histamines! that’s why there a lot people who have sensory sensitivities who are ace. it super makes sense that you would be sensitive to the histamine release because of your other allergy issues ☺️
maybe you should take a zyrtec, have a smoke, and try sex with a like… a not straight man. i think straight men are very selfish partners (imo lol)
