Welcome! Good to be back - and what a good way to return with this amazing bass video from The Wellermen and a whole bunch of awesome basses!
In this video, I will evaluate, react, and analyze their performance of Misty Mountains. As with my other videos, I always try to only listen to the video the first time through and give you my feedback. Please be sure to watch their video before you watch this one! What an amazing display of voice, audio, and visuals!

Chord at 12:30 seems to be an A#min7/E# instead of a bII7 chord.
I said F-natural quite a bit (and Cb instead of B-naturall, it should be E# since we are in G# Minor, though F-natural works in Ab minor. Choose your key 👍
The Time is 4/4 with the middle section having a 3+3+2 division. You could just keep it in 4/4 the entire time, though the division there does highly suggest a time signature change, especially because of the emphasis of the groupings.
Also, relistening to it - I hear a nice G#5! Great stuff.

Okay… was NOT expecting that deep of a voice.

10:03 is that not just Bbm
Yes! The chord isolated is Bb Minor. Though, in the natural minor scale, the 2 (ii) chord is a diminished chord (Bb-Db-Fb, or A#-C#-E) instead of a minor chord. The 6th degree is flat in a natural minor scale. Altering it to F/E# changes its focus/tonal center in that moment - also it changes the feel to a Dorian mode which has the raised 6th degree. I usually think of them as secondary minor dominants, if that is a thing (v/v of G# or Ab minor, which is an A# or Bb Minor chord that leads you to the D#/Eb chord).
Thinking chords only, it's easy and correct to call it Bbm. Theory-wise, having the altered note shifts the tonal center in that moment - it makes it feel like we are ascending/descending to another key, or hinting the possibility of it (or just a secondary minor dominant chord to emphasize the v chord).
I called it F-natural out of habit, (in G# Minor, it is usually E-natural, but the altered/raised 6th makes it E#).

No worries man! I think of theory the same way I think of routes - you start somewhere, and it just leads you to where you want to go. Sometimes you make stops, other times you stay somewhere a bit until you are ready to go home. Or, you can even go to a new home. It's all a journey and the routes can change as you wish 👍
At 25:56 you hit G#1 with your full voice? I remember you couldn't hit Bb1 many years ago in your first video where you talked about subharmonics. Did your voice become lower over the years or is it lower here due to natural day-to-day fluctuations?
There's some give and take on a daily basis. I have noticed throughout the day it all depends on how much I use my voice.
On days where I don't teach, my voice maintains its lows pretty well. Other days, it feels like my lows aren't really there until I do a full warm-up (or warm-down). Thanks!
Also, if I exercise (run, breathing exercises, biking, etc.), I find that my voice can zip up and down my range with more ease than usual. Some days, Ab1 is good. Other days, it is really quiet or not really there. I have also been working on mixing (fry and chest, etc) for those low notes so it has been interesting in developing some lows as well.

My lowest chest note is usually C#2 and it has been the same for the last 10 years (I'm 25 now), so I guess it will stay mostly the same unfortunately.
But I have to say, your voice sounds absolutely amazing! It's fascinating to see your development over the years, both in terms of subharmonics and your regular singing :)
Thank you for introducing me to subharmonics many years ago!! (even though I'm not a professional singer, I just use them when I sing on my own for myself)
I have found that for me, coordination of fry and falsetto has helped me gain (slow, gradual, but also healthy) a better hold on my voice. I am still learning to change my approach to explore different sounds. There is some truth to lower notes having a true bottom, but that is after you have found ways to improve coordination and efficiency. Also, Bass voices do change. You may experience two to three more significant changes at around 30, 40, and 50, give or take a few years. If not range, then timbre.

@@bass2yang Tim Foust from Home Free fame told Elizabeth from Charismatic Voice that when he tutors basses that the first thing he tells them is to work on the falsetto and high range. He compared it to skipping leg day.

13:12 yes, it's not, usually when you have flat 2 it's really oddsounding, this sounds quite normal, what I hear is just subdominant in 1st inversion, so you have C# minor, with low e in the bass, that goes to minor dominant D# minor.
They often go for perfect intervals only, like the original. Hope that helps :)
Interesting, upon 2nd listen, I hear A#min7/E# and not a low E in the bass. I'll take your word for it though. That just means I need to keep working on my ears. 🔥 thanks man!

Ah, I see. You're saying it's not going D#minor, but A#minor. That G# is quite strong though in that chord on the top voice - we are talking about the same chord, right?
@@bass2yang My appologies I was overthinking this, starts with D#minor/A# then goes to Bmaj7 then that F and B tritone resolving that B to A#minor/c#.
So bass goes up A# B C# and Melody goes B C# G# A# xd
What are you mic EQ settings?
For my reactions, I usually just set a limiter so it doesn't overload or distort. Sometimes I'll roll-off the low end at around 60 Hz, sometimes not. Depends on how foot traffic is like upstairs 😄
