These comments make me feel pretty lucky. With 2 years in, I have way more good chief experiences than bad ones. And only one really atrocious experience, from which I was essentially saved by a master chief. There is hope, people. The chiefs mess is made out of the population, and inevitably there will be some bad ones, but a lot of them genuinely care about the Sailors.
As a civilian undergoing a transition from middle manager to department head, I find this video very encouraging. Highly experienced senior NCO's giving a shot at moving up and discovering how much they still need to learn. Hats off from a major ally of the United States in Asia.
A long Time ago I had a great “ Company Commander “ in boot camp , ETC Angel . After A School , I had an awesome Chief in Bethesda ED , HMC ( SS ) Joseph Coppola who was a Fleet Sailor who loathed Shore Duty. He had been on Surface Ships , the FMF until his beloved boats. On my Third day he told an HM 3 to get a haircut , “..... its in regs ! “ this idiot ex claimed , Chief picked him up and proceeded three bulkead counseling sessions. I fell in Love. I Went to a CG and earned ESWS. After 3 years I Cross decked to Third Mar Div. Then shore Duty :(. Sadaam did his Kuwait thing , within 48 hours I was in Pendleton and was the BAS LPO - Triage Officer 1st CEB , TF Ripper for 8 months .... In my 8 years of Naval Service I had THREE great Chiefs. The other 100 or so , I would Not follow OUT of a burning Building
The initiation is not a requirement. Be within standards, CO promotion endorsement and leadership academy which is mostly some fat chief reading off a PowerPoint. Don't be fooled by the so called u have to do this. If they say that to u or discriminate u in any way, go to legal, do an IG. As long as the chiefs mess is using a federal institution, they cannot prevent u from meetings, etc. Heck, the association needs permission from the base CO to operate and.... not part nor endorsed by the Navy anyways. Know your rights and exercise them. And u will get pinned when u get paid... unless u get frocked before that, only the CO can retain frocking and if he does, what was the reason? If u met the standard, they cannot prevent frocking. Get legal involved, you will win. Once you are pinned as a chief, never ever be part of a DRB, not part of the legal system nor required... sometimes those idiots in a DRB cause more harm than anything. If u ever in a DRB, ask for a lawyer and keep your mouth shut, chances are, command has nothing on u. Stay in the DRB until 1630 and walk out at 1631, only the CO can secure your regular liberty, but ask the senior person first if he or she is securing your liberty. Unless they have a letter from the CO, they can't cause it isn't punitive.

Even though I served in the Marines, I have much love for the Navy!
not as much as this NAVY BMC (ESW) has for his Marines!
INDBLACK JONES it's nice to hear a marine say something nice about the navy, it's usually putting the navy down. Thank you brother
