    My HZ6 is a beast. It came shaving sharp out of the box and the sheath it excellent. I was able to use the top eyelets for the screws, and it doesn’t shift. I was able to stab through 2” bamboo with about 1/4” wall thickness and wrench the blade out with no bending, or even dulling. Very happy with it.

      @@OGBladeReviewsJames Williams didn't want them very sharp. His statement was that it aided in moving a person's limb where he wanted it for a follow-up stab. Not the first time I've heard that from martial artists.

    Thank you for the review, however I found my perfect large fixed blade knife a year ago - the Glock FM78. It is genuine military issue and is made in Austria. The finishing is among the best I have seen - in line with the military issue stuff out there. The guard is rough on the edged, but this adds to the 'raw' character of the knife, in a similar fashion that raw blade smithing does - the rest, the bevels the transitions are perfect! That thing is made in Asia. I saw a blade of a Glock FM78 bent laterally 48 degrees and return dead true, and I saw a Fallniven A1 Survival Knife fail laterally before the Glock did under load.
    Now for the really sobering part, the Glock is 36 grams lighter, probably 100 times stronger (tip included - I put it through a 1" thick piece of solid pine 8 times - with no tip deformation), has better and perfect balance (you can use it as a throwing knife), it has more speed and better on contact slicing ability along the entire edge.
    No offence to you or your viewers, but from my experience and granted this is not true in 'all' cases, but it is true in most we are largely ripped off and miss lead by knife brands and affiliates. Meaning I have learned to be very prejudice of trusting CRKT, Bark River, Gerber, Cold Steel, even Fallkniven or any large especially civilian targeted companies and their myriad of outsourced manufacturers anymore on self-defense, combat or hard use blades - in fact on most all my blades.
    I am telling you most of what you are buying is junk, marketed on things like looks and embelished folk-law and nonsense. Through experience I now spend my money on select, rare and proven blades. IMO, the Glock FM78 is such a tool. It is a rare exception. It is the knife I looked for over 40 years and it is my exit knife. I brought 6 in black. I will never go back to these brands again, ever.

      Thanks for your thoughts and comments. I would agree that many knives today are bought based on looks and not material structure, and if you like your Glock knife that is always good when we find something that suits us. However there are many edged items out there that are strong and quality oriented, But finding them does take time and effort and experimentation. We all have our "grail" knives that we value and trust. I've found a number of these over the course of 50 years....

    I'm definitely getting one of these and the Inazuma folder. I love James Williams designs and I have quite a few ( like yourself) of his CRKT blades: Shinbu, Yukanto, Otanashi Noh Ken, Hissatsu folder, Goken. Of the folders the Goken was the only one genuinely sharp out of the box. They are excellent piercers for sure...as good as a dagger! This new HZ tanto is a very affordable version of his much more expensive fixed blades made by Winkler and TRC( and I'm sure you know this already) I would like to get a Winkler made version in this same size range or larger...they occasionally do runs of 8 and 9 inch blade versions. But this is fantastic for a budget version!
    I'm a sucker for traditional tantos period!

    Thank you for your review...it was very informative and complete. I do however am concerned with the shapness of the blade itself....considering that CRKT IS MARKETING THIS PRODUCT THROUGH J.W. who happens to be a Martial Artist you woud think that the knife would be exceptionally sharp. Quality control should be ands needs to be emplemeted! Here in Europe the knife retails for €175.00 which is over $200 so given this retai value I'm wondering why i would need to now go to a 3rd party knife sharpening outfit to sharpen the knife? (I believe this is a fair question). J.W. really needs to have a meeting with CRKT in order to get it resolved. To much money for a 85 percent knife!

    • @OGBladeReviews
      @OGBladeReviews  2 года назад +1

      Many factory knives come through with less than satisfactory edges. Also, in my case, I prefer an aggressive edge. My complaint over the years about Benchmade, for instance, is that they ground a smooth, shaving sharp edge which wouldn't cut with light pressure on the draw. I had to give these a "toothie" edge through various sharpening methods.
      The edge on the HZ6 is thick, by nature of the blade geometry that makes it strong for point work. So, really, if a fine, slicey edge is desired, this may not be the tool for the job. It is impressive for what it was designed to do. Knives are personal items which each user "tunes" to his purposes, I feel.
      Thanks for your comments and enjoy! 🗡️👍🗡️

    • @OGBladeReviews
      @OGBladeReviews  2 года назад +1

      Should do both according to Williams, the designer, but certainly to look at the blade profile one would surmise that it is primarily a thrusting weapon. Same is true of the original Tanto blade. It also really depends a lot upon the way the edge is ground. Considering that the katana is a long narrow blade, it is also a superior chopper and slicer by virtue of the weight that it carries into the cut, and it's edge geometry, beyond that of the shorter blade. Also, naturally CKRT is not going to sell a knife that it says won't cut... LOL 😆 🗡️👍

      Hi there..i went ahead and purchased this product. I'm somewhat disappointed with the knife along with the sheath. I found the sheath disappointing...at the top of the sheath where the sheath forms shows an opening crease/gap approximately 3/16". Which makes the kife rattle. My knife cane sharp (not very sharp but sharp) The overall tang with the scales is heavy. Do i like the knife yes from an overall standpoint) and for its tactical purposes. I believes from years of design, details and building/construction i believe CRKT could have spent much more of their time working on both the Ergonomics and balance. This is not only a knife for those who serve but for a civilian as well. If i may...i would hand my wife a vaquero from CS and not this knife and Mr. Williams should view this as a notation on his designs. Good knife not what i was envisioning. I would like to see CRKT spend more time on the technical/engineering side than on the marketing side and advertisement. This knife doesn't flow in my hands! If you pick up a 6 to 7 inch survival knife it feels lighter and again much more balanced. I dont think a Samurai would have chosen this design and our tier 1 operators and for that matter a Tier 2 unit would certainly have much more to choose from in this price range to select from. I apologise for sounding harsh but what gets me is...for all the time JW spends on makig videos with his Samurai outfit on...this knife doesn't have the true engineering behind it!

    There is NOTHING "Americanized" about the Otonashi Noh Ken blade design at all. The design is called Osoraku Zukuri. That long point, the kissaki (tip) is bigger than half of the blade’s length, which is considered an O-kissaki (large kissaki). This is a blade shape developed by Shimada Sukemune of the Shimada school of swordsmithing during the late Muromachi period of Japan.
    The Americanized Tanto is what Cold Steel did in the 80s with the very abrupt clipped off tanto that became their flagship design.
    Williams' blade designs are historic Japanese designs.
