  • In this video I compare the Bb Tuba (Besson Sovereign BE994) with a Contrabass Trombone. I play a few scales, an excerpt from Gabriel's Oboe, and then empty my slide. How thrilling.

    Nice to see videos like these. I'm a composer and I am curious about how certain instruments like the contrabass trombone sound on their own. It reminds me of the time I attended a live performance of Schoenberg's Gurrelieder in the 1970's and the sight of the brass section alone was stunning. 10 horns (4 doubling on Wagner tubas), 6 trumpets, bass trumpet, alto trombone, 4 tenor-bass trombones, bass trombone, contrabass trombone, contrabass tuba. And the chord at the end of Part I -- wow what a sound.

    I much prefer the tuba, but I think in particular pieces the contrabass trombone would be better. The tuba can make a really clean, soft, rich sound, but can also be a fun instrument, like in a polka. The trombone however seems to make a less clean sound, sort of in between a tuba and a contrabass bassoon. Therefore I think in certain pieces that could be very very cool. Nevertheless, they both are beautiful instruments; gotta love contrabass...

      There is a variety of shapes and sizes when it comes to tubas. The instrument he has there is a 4/4 (full size) compensating BBb tuba. Depending on the band environment you play in you may be more familiar with EEb tubas, or if you're a school student maybe even 3/4 or 1/2 size tubas.
      Incase it's just a perception thing, that tuba is pretty close in size to the marching tubas/contrabass bugles used in DCI (a very American type of band)

    You should do a video on a comparison between a sousaphone and a helicon!

      It has a different sound and a bit different embouchure, but other than that fingerings are the same.

    So this may be a really dumb question but is a tenor trombone mouthpiece the same size as a regular bass trombone mouthpiece?

    • @nickzakos271
      @nickzakos271 7 лет назад

      That_one_guy602 For a good tone, you generally use a larger mouthpiece. The bass one is not nearly as large as a tuba mouthpiece, but it's larger nonetheless.

    I thought you did really well on the Bb bass Tuba more than the Trombone to be honest. I haven't tried to blow a Bb but I play an Eb Tuba and I am a grade 5. Apparently it's more difficult to play the Bb than Eb?

    I may be a student with a trombone but always hold it with the slide closed and holding it firmly with both slide braces

    Also both names derived from the word trumpet. Tuba is latin for trumpet, and Trombone literally means "large trumpet" in Italian.

    I like how he called the tuba "this thing" and "that" and called the trombone by its name.

    I have a quick and unrelated question for you. Could you review Bob McChesney's music book, Technical Studies for Trombone. It seems to be a decent book. I'd like your opinion on it. Thanks!

      I hate to bother you. But, have you decided whether to review Bob McChesney's book, Technical Studies for Trombone? I think you'd do a good job at reviewing his book.
      Thanks!
