Hey everyone!!
I just posted a new video about my overall experience if anyone is interested. ruclips.net/video/2YfCVcYm-ks/видео.html
Dani_Love12 🙌🏾
Dani_Love12 HEY SISTAH GURL! Now I’m really looking into this now. I’m now subscribed.
Dani_Love12 I'm a chief mate with SIU
I wish you could talk with my 15yr old daughter about this...shed love it! Be well and maybe you'll reply?
I'm about to share this and afterward take it down k? Thanks
It sounds like you have to put life on hold financially for about a year and that once you get your first ship you're in. My social security will take care of that. Excellent video! Thanks for covering the health and age concerns I had. I think I will give it a whirl and see what happens.
Go for it!
@@Dani_TheUnicorn Hello thanks for sharing. Are you still a merchant seaman.
@@Dani_TheUnicorndid you know how to swim before
@@roselynholloway7863 I’ve been swimming since 2 years old.
Merchant Mariner here...I'm on a ship in Singapore and live in Bali when I'm off! Great career and lots of guys are retiring. I recommend the career if you like hard work and lots of money
I am 59 and I have been a chemical operator for 20 of those years. I want to thank you for the information you gave. Very informative, I could do the training, and the traveling. I will look into it. You take care of yourself in these trying times. Live long and prosper.
The median salary for water transportation workers, including marine mariners, is $55,590, as of May 2017. The highest 10 percent of water transportation workers earns nearly $120,000, while the lowest 10 percent earns around $27,000. A rookie merchant marine, such as sailor, earns a median annual salary of $40,730.
The good is there isn't many places to spend it so it racks up, correct? And you get to see the world.
Thank you!! 🙏🏼 Thinking of pursuing this career I'm 26 and single
same here
I was 32 when I had my daughter. I could’ve done this for 15 years before becoming a mom. Would’ve been the perfect career for me. Too bad there was no such thing as RUclips back then, so I had no idea this job even existed or what it was called or where to look it up.
Anybody that goes to Piney Point, choose either galley, deck or engine... BUT if you go deck or engine, dont stop at just being unlicensed, SIU has officer classes... You can become and officer (3rd mate or 3 assist. engineer) and work your way up to Captain or Chief Engineer.
I went through SIU in 2003 and no one will tell you that you can become as officer...
You can make upwards of 130k-180k per year as an officer on ATBs for 6 months of work only... FACTS
idiot U a friend of mine when through SIU and just got his 3 engineer license. I met him as a QMED and watched him work his way up.
Thanks for your input and thanks for checking out my video!
@@Dani_TheUnicorn no problem, thanks for the video
How long does it take to climb up to 3rd mate?
@@leo4rmleoland You need 1080 days of seatime working in the deck dept. There are no 3rd mate jobs though. Very hard to find one. The merchant marine academies keep pumping out graduates every year and the schools have flooded the market.
This video has been THE most helpful so far. you have no idea. I'm already start some of the process and you definitely answer some. Im applying SIU, very helpulf.!! THANKS!!!!!!
Roland Vargas awesome!! Thanks for watching. Good luck 🤞🏾😁
I want to thank you for your informative videos on becoming a Merchant Seaman. I'm currently in the pre-employment phase at MSC and I look forward to my time at sea once everything is done. Your videos were one of the first ones that I viewed during my research prior to applying and it was very helpful. Hope all is well with you and appreciate the time and effort you put into informing the public about the maritime industry. Hell, once I get back, I may feel compelled to make a vid as well to pay it forward. 😉👍
You good?
@@divulgewithchip1099 - I am. I got everything done, but Covid shut all my shit down. I have my MM license, but not getting on a ship until all this nonsense ends.
My Niece does it, she is 23, she said while your on the ship your not spending money. they house you for free, feed you for free. when get off the ship you have a good bit of money in the bank. I wish i did something like this when i was younger. My niece went Piney Point as well.
It's like being in jail
with a full time job. 💰
Omg this is my dream, thank you so much for your advice! I’m working on my certs right now before I turn in my application.
Good video, if I was younger, I was 22 yrs in the Navy and enjoyed sea time except for separation. I too was in engineering and understand hands on and repair.
This really helped, watched both of your videos and gave me a lot of insight, especially with being a woman wanting to go into this field it was wonderful to hear everything
thanks after going through 10 videos i finally found some useful information other than video compilations over terrible music.
docgrins glad it helped. Thanks for watching!

This vid was extremely informative. I want to say thank you sis! And best wishes to you in your journey.
KeitaMan no problem! And thank you for checking out my video! Best wishes on your journey as well ♥️
Hello Thanks for all this info really helped ease my mind
I’m glad I could help somehow. Thanks for watching my video.
Thank you for this view! Great overview! I used to sail as an Army contractor with MSC ships and I am interested in becoming a merchant seaman. This was an excellent guide!
This info is hard to find thanks for making this. It’s encouraging to see a woman in this role I feel less nervous now!
Thank you! You got this 🙌🏾
Yes, I want to hear more!!
This was incredible. Thank you. I didn't know this job existed until just now and you made it all so clear.
Thank you! Glad I could help. Thanks for watching.
Hey Dani !! What's up !! ?? I'm Scott.. I just got my tentatively accepted into the unlicensed apprenticeship program at SIU. So I'm just enjoying your video and others as well. Just wanted to say hi!!
What's security like on a vessel? What happens if a crime is committed on ship? Is there a "jail" on board where someone is detained? What about medical care should an emergency arise?
Great informational video. Answered a lot of my questions, I’m looking forward for this process... ps I’m you thousandth subscriber.
THANK YOUUUU !! 🙏🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Just came across your channel. Thanks for information. I've wondered about this so thanks . I was a hall mutt for over 20yr
About the military benefits thing. I'm not sure about the rest of the world but you're allowed to shop in the base in Guam. You can even shop in the commisarry where only military personnel are allowed to shop.
Nice video I am actually about to start my career for the merchant seamen and I've been trying to find out more about it and I think you covered everything thanks
Really interesting, Dani! Thanks for posting this.
Wes Harris and thank you for watching!

I just want to thank you for this video, I have been searching for a good well informed video. I am excited and want to do this as well, I am in the process of getting all my documents to apply for this.
Anthony Lo hey. Thanks for watching my video. Hope it helped. Good luck!!
Dani_Love12 Do you plan to vlog while your on duty?
Anthony Lo I actually vlogged a lot on my last ship, I just never posted it.
Hopefully I can find some of those videos.
Proud of you! This was something that I wanted to do but women did not do in my day. It's wonderful that you can do this now. I wish you the best in your career!
Wow!! 60's Wow I could do this!
Just signed on with SIU. Nice to see young women getting an MMC and taking to the seas. Good on ya!
What's the MMC?
@@drehardin Merchant Mariners Credential
in the SIU you can do what is called a Life Boat challenge for a job by challenge them with the Life Boat credential if you have it they don't you get the job . Looks like allot has changed since i was in back in the 90's .
Can you do a video about daily life at training? You make me super excited to be joining the Union.
Definitely. Next on my list!
Very nice video and great info. Thank you
Dominic Marshall thank you 🙏🏾
Thank you. Good info. God bless you all over again

Hi thanks for your video. Are you ocean or great lakes? I was in college in traverse city mi for lake freighters. Engineering officer, math was brutal. Unfortunately I did'nt cut it. This was back in the 90's. Still regret it. Glad the world is growing up it's great women are allowed to do this. Best wishes to you.
Sorry you answered my question about lake or ocean. Hey you chose a very excellent career. Engineering is a great career. Again, best wishes.
Thanks!! And it’s never too late to try again. Best wishes to you as well!

Thank you for your reply. Here's a non Nautical question, do you like working on old cars? If so what type?
The only old car I ever worked on was my first little beater lol. Other than that, I really don’t. My dad does all my car work for me. I just watch and assist lol. It’s different when I’m home.
I was told i can go get a physical and drug test from my doctor.
I was also told the fire and water training isn’t absolutely necessary to get hired on.
Ms Dani your volume levels in your videos are so low I can barely hear ya sweetie :) But I do love your videos and will keep watching for sure. You go girl see the world !!!
Dorothy Demoss sorry! I’ll try to fix the volume next time. Thank you 🙏🏾♥️
And thanks for watching.
The best answer to "What are you doing here" is: The same thing you are. They shut up after that.
so after you officially become a merchant mariner, you can just sign up for contracts whenever you feel like it? so can i say, sail out for 6 months and then come back and become a teacher? or say if you havent been out to sea for awhile, like 3 years do you need to recertify or something? thanks again for making this video, very informative.
Yes! You have to take your classes over that expire like water survival, firefighting, etc., but you decide when you work once you’re part of the Union. Ideally, you need to ship at least 90 days of every year to keep your benefits and to be able to renew courses for free-otherwise you have to pay for the classes yourself-about $500 per course.
Very Helpful Video ❤️
My brother do this he live in Japan now 15 years in now. Its merchant mariner ,and I have a brother that a marine.
Enjoyed it; Thanks for posting!
LarryRickenbacker thank you for watching!
Fresh out of high school and i've already gotten my twic did the drug test now im stuck on what to do....credential? send everything in? I have no clue please help
Yung sin you should apply to a maritime college (King’s Point, SUNY) or to seafarers.org. You’ll need your MMC and passport, letters of recommendation, it’s all listed in the website. Best of luck and congrats on graduating!!

Hello I’m a tugboat pilot in Huston an I’m looking to maybe change jobs an I was wondering if u can send me a Little information. On how that apply an maybe change jobs
THANK YOU!!!!
thanks for this; 2 QUESTIONS:
1) Can you ask for a job in any country? like, if I am Argentinian (I am), and I have some education on ships, and I travel to USA and ask for a job there, are they gonna give it to me? or are there strong preferences with nationality or with the type of school each company or country prefer?
2)one guy with a youtube channel says you people have 4hs of work followed by 8 hs of free time.....but annother guy said He worked: 4hs watching, had 4 free hours, then 4 hs working on the deck, then 4 hs. watching again, then 8 free hours...........which one was your case? I live in Argentina and I
Very, very informative! I'm surprised that mariners don't have to know how to swim, though.
Very cute. I would love to take you out one day. I’m on the way to my TWIC appt. but anyways slide if your up to it.
Ye she fine. So you know she only gon get finer everyday out at sea
Thanks a lot!! this video its very helpfull! It wolud be very interesting if you start a vlog as a woman seaman. So, we girls can have an insight about this career that is mainly dominated by men.
Borigirl hey. Thanks for watching my video.
I made a short video about what it’s like as a woman, it’s not a vlog but it has a lot of info. I haven’t posted it because I’m not sure who would be interested.
Pls post it
Dani_Love12 hey thanks for replying! Yes please post that video!!
Wow. Thanks, GIRL, for referring to yourself as a GIRL. Don't know how old you are but any female over 21 is a WOMAN. You're why there's still so much sexist attitudes among women.

They provide you with everything you need now... You have to pay a total of 1500 dollars for Uniforms, credentials ext... And the school is a year long now.
Sreynsh Kumar how so can you explain
Wish I'd have known about the Lundeburg school in Piney Point (Maryland) before I began my teaching career some 30 years ago.
@@LarryRickenbacker i was going to school to be a teacher but decided to do this
Joseph Roberson why did it go from 3 months to a year? That seems like a long time especially if you won’t get paid that much for training.
@@ASSwipe. Please take the advice of an old man: Save and invest some of that money while you are young. Good luck!
I joined S.I.U. back in 94 right out of high school. Stopped sailing back in 2001.
Power to the People a long time brother.
Power to the People do u have to cut your hair
No not when you are on the ship. When i was down at Piney Point in the Trainee Program you used to have to get a haircut once and stay shaven. I'm not sure about how the trainee program at Piney Point is now.
DCUO iVegeta they made the guys cut theirs in the training program
@@Dani_TheUnicorn im about to apply how hard was the math test? And how long was the application process
Dani_Love 12.....What is the average pay scale like. I don't need to know what YOU make exactly but IS there a kind of an average annual income that you can expect when you first start out and does that increase over time like any other job?....Or is it strictly based on what each shipping company pays per "ship out" And your job classification (cook, engineering or deck "classification")? And do you negotiate or bid on jobs and pay rates? It DOES seem to be an "interesting" lifestyle. Just curious.
Roger Buss non officer, $3k-$6k/ month roughly. Every ship/company has its own contract. Every contract has different pay. Officers make more, but they have degrees for this; $10k starting off roughly. The more you upgrade, the higher the pay. Most upgrades require a specific amount of sea time. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾
Danny quick question, is it impossible to find a job with be labeled with a c-card? my plan i want to do is join the union after I do my first contract because I need employment fast
Kirk Baldwin hey. It’s possible. It just may take longer with seniority being low (c-card).
@Dani_Love12 okay im aready working off shore out of Galveston Tx.. But i dont think im necessarily considered a merchant marinera...Have the Twic card and i mean hell i live on the boat 4on 2off..if that make sence??...so does the experience i have now help and do you know where in Tx i can fine the union buuilding?
James Berneil a friend of mine has a similar job to yours. He works on tugs and some times ships.
There is a union hall in Houston on York St.
Hope that helps. Thanks for watching my video!

Do you know a way where I can apply online? If you do please share me the details. Thanks in advance.
Please can you tell me about how to get chance for the upgrading my marine engineering license in Maryland??? when I am other nationally living outside USA???
If you have the sea time, you can apply to upgrade.

Most of the maritime academies and training facilities are free.
I had to pay close to $500 for my uniform though.

Can you provide the name of school you attended?
Dani_Love12 how is it free? Is it cause it’s highly selective?
@@Dani_TheUnicorn Getting a bachelor's degree in marine transportation or marine engineering at a maritime academy is not free, unless you have a scholarship... Getting an education at a maritime academy is quite expensive. In fact, the chief mate on my last ship said he owed $100k in student loans for attending Cal Maritime. The cheapest academy though would be Texas A&M Galveston. Def the most affordable. Most expensive is Maine or Mass.
