This song deals with Diana’s desire to feel emotion again. She acknowledges that while her life is perfect with the medicine, it’s not actually real. Having recommitted to being medicated, Diana witnesses Natalie and Henry’s budding relationship and longs to share the experience with her, as well as feel those same feelings again. She ultimately decides, with her son Gabe’s encouragement, to flush her medication and tackle her illness drug-free.

I think it's very powerful to hear a song about how conflictive the use of medication can be to treat mental illnesses. Of course, it's not to discourage anyone who needs them from taking them, but it shows a real situation where it just doesn't sit right with you and it's valid.

This is a common issue for people suffering from bipolar disorder. The medications they give you are called mood stabilizers, but that's a bit of a misnomer. The meds don't just target the highs and lows, they dampen everything so you're going through life barely feeling anything.
