Hey Sarah. Hope you’re feeling better!
As a FYI in case you haven’t come across these 3rd party tools yet, but because the spam problem is now so huge and RUclips’s own built-in systems are so obviously garbage, there are now programs/bots people have coded up to use your RUclips’s API access that can help fight the spam on your own accounts.
Programs that’ll delete/block (or put it into the ‘Held For Review’ category) anything with words like [the name of that messaging app] INCLUDING variations of it where people replace ‘A’ with ‘Å’ or whatever (or where the bots split up the digits of a phone number etc). Or if the poster’s username is too similar to yours. Or if the profile picture is within x% of yours. etc.
Anyway, I figure you already knew, but just in case.. 😄
I started to make my own tool recently as a personal project, but then discovered they already existed!

Even on a bus stop my bluetooth headphones will disconnect several times because of the several people around me having their own connected to their phones, interfering with mine. Bluetooth is not a reliable connection, not to mention the lag when you’re watching a movie. Why would they remove the headphone jack is beyond me. It’s definitely not for space. The trackpad limits could be subtle if they wanted to blend them in the looks. There are so many ways of doing this without hurting the looks. I don’t know who is this laptop mainly addressed to as a potential buyer, but it’s definitely not for someone who would care for ergonomics and functionality.

Most of the design decisions are supported with solid functional reasons.. A 14 core processor isn't fitting in such a small chassis without extra room for cooling. The headphone jack was getting in the way of that, as well as the function row. The new module is less than half the depth of a typical function key module. This laptop outperforms everything in it's class and price point by far.

There’s no point of the new intel chips except to say they are faster than apple. The current chips already draw too much power for battery, require ridiculous fans that make way too much noise, get so hot you can’t lap it, and oh yeah I guess you don’t have to worry about battery life because it has to be plugged in to get any performance.
My M1 max isn’t perfect or the fastest but it works as a LAPtop no matter what you throw at it. I had a specd out razer previosly that barely made it 2 years before turning into to complete turd inside and out. And even in normal tasks became too hot to touch. I like this laptop, but will never buy it only because of the headphone jack. I own high quality headphones, and you just can't get the same level of quality from USB-C dongles, and even less so with bluetooth.

Given the issues, we are seeing 40 top-tier games on the 12th Gen processor architecture (See Jay's two cents for more details). I am skipping all-new Dell laptops for another 12 months. I was also disappointed that they only moved the XPS 13 to a 12th gen processor. In hindsight, it's a good thing they didn't propagate it through the entire product line. It's clear they are aware of a significant issue in using the 12th gen architecture with major software that Microsoft and the software vendors have yet to resolve. But, with the price increases of about 20% here in Canada and Dell tightening their financing requirements I just cannot see enough value to make it worth acquiring anything by Dell. I also recently had an issue with a 32" 4K monitor. It's taken me three months to get a replacement! Not acceptable. While the XPS is not strictly a gaming computer its specs make it a consideration. So Dell is off the list for 2022. Your point about the headphone jack and keyboard is valid but the inability to run major software on the 12th gen architecture makes this a hard pass for me. I also don't know if I can adjust to the "virtual Track pad" either. So just say no!

I don’t understand these complaints. First, on a premium thin-and-light, I can’t imagine plugging in wired headphones, especially when hyper-mobility is the aim. If you’re a video editor, there are many better alternatives. Second, honestly - who looks at their trackpad? Ever? I can see my trackpad, and I never look at it. I don’t mean rarely. I mean never.

Right on Sara! I really wish that more folks who have viewership would call out company for bad or even mediocre design decisions. I feel like there isn't a good way to get feedback to companies that they actually read and getting the right feedback information to the designers of things is a fantastic way to push the world forward. my biggest tech complaints recently have come from the design of cell phones. my biggest gripe is that it's REALLY hard to find a phone that doesn't have a camera infringing on the screen area these days... it's all hole-punches (a literal hole in the screen) or stupid notches where the screen is notched out... ridiculous! just put the camera at the top where it's traditionally been until about 3 years ago. yes, that adds a couple mm of space to the top and bottom of the display, and THAT'S FINE! they can use the tiny bit of extra space to integrate high quality dual front firing stereo speakers! (another feature that's been notably missing). I think Sony is the only (barely) mainstream brand who are making phones with those 2 features and it's really annoying.

Really liked the video. I am kind of triggered and cannot resist sharing my thoughts here:
    1. the moment i saw that keyboard on the xps 13 plus, i lost interest. the distance b/w the keys give things a professional look; plus, it helps differentiate the keys. That keyboard alone made this laptop ineligible for me to even read anything else about it.
    2. that invisible touch pad on the xps 13 plus - useless. it is not helpful. If i am shuffling a lot between the keyboard and touchpad, i want the touchpad to be visible; so that i do not have to go through that extra step of identifying where it is located. Give form and functionality, both. If you cannot give both, give preference to functionality over form.
    3. Thinkpads are the best windows based laptops in my opinion. I used the R51 (it was an IBM ThinkPad R51 back then, not Lenovo branded). It was the first laptop ever in my life that i used and since then, i have compared every laptop to them. The keyboard experience is unmatched. If you can get your hands on an ibm thinkpad, use it. You will forget every laptop keyboard after that.

Sorry, never again Dell (never say Never). My 2020 XPS 15 has too many issues (constant fan running, bad webcam, and battery life are the biggest). Recently bought at Macbook 13 M1 16gb and even though I LOVE the XPS keyboard and the overall POWER, the macbook is a beast.

Yeah DELL really not realsiing the 14 inch market. They could have made a 14 inch QHD+ version with better cooling, larger battery ,more ports and front firing Quad speaker system,1080p webcam. Also resolve their QC issues. Instead they did everything people hated about apple going even further by removing headphone jack.

I love this Dell, it is simplistic, clean and a stroke of genius. It has Intel gen 12 that is both twice as fast cpu over last gen, double the ram speed & pci4 ssd speed. With 12 gen u get usb-c gen 4.0 w/dp 1.4 & thunderbolt 4. This means double the bandwidth, enabling 8k60hz and a donglelife whose transfer speeds are extreme. As your cat, I'm here to tell you, don't do this, just don't. Now, when you get well, order the new 40" 5k dell monitor, and let it both charge and connect to this little baby through usb-c. The toutch buttons do not change w/the apps, it's the same whatever program you run. The new track pad is toutch sensitive w multiple sensors. You'll change your mind.

Ugh I just hate how there are only 2 USB C and then 1 to charge so you actually mostly have 1 USB C... while my XPS 13 has a separate charging port, 2 USB A and 1 USB C and SD card reader.. It's the perfect thinness. It doesn't need to be any thinner. I don't understand why they can't put 3 USB ports (2 C and 1 A or 2 A 1 C or whatever) and have a separate charging port like the old ones. The only thing I don't really like about my old XPS is the carbon fiber... that thing needs to be cleaned every day because it gets so dirty and full of prints.

hassle free. i also dont understand what is wrong with newer BT headphones on laptops? i mean new stuff from 5.1 onward is very good, prob even better than on a phone in terms of audio quality

its a much simpler touch bar than Apples. functionality doesn't move by app nor does position... so its less likely to freeze. Also, this and the sound port removal were done for a reason. the headphone port would not allow them to change the hinges which needed to move due to the new cooling system for more powerful CPUs. The touch bar is 2.2mm thinner than real function keys which allows for using the 28watt CPUs without having to thicken the body by much. It sounds like you haven't actually used this thing hands on. Your friend Linus loved it, and he has a tendency to be hard on vendor gimmicks, I suggest getting a loaded Dell and trying it out before drawing conclusions.

I love the new XPS 13 Plus. Keyboard looks amazing. Would rather have actual function keys vs capacitive but they do look nice. Not having a visible trackpad is hard to tell. I'd have to use it to give an opinion. No headphone jack is huge issue. I do use wireless buds but if they're dead then you're SOL. I don't want more adaptors considering barely any ports to begin with. I'm holding off for the 15 or 17 inch version anyway when they release in the summer. Not sure if they'll add a headphone jack or have actual function buttons or even more ports. But they normally do have more then the smaller models.

My guess how Dell came up with the XPS 13 plus: they told a design team to guess all the ways apple might go, and design a product to compete for each direction. They came up with a low probability design where apple leaned into thin and light. How far could apple take it? What about no edge next to the keyboard? What about the entire bottom half is a trackpad? What about the entire area above the keyboard is a touch bar? What about only wireless headphones? And then they tried their best to build that design so they would have a product to compete with apple just in case the rumors were wrong. But along the way they had to compromise: we can't make the entire bottom half a trackpad because our palm rejection software sucks, but we can make the trackpad edge disappear; we can't make a full on touch bar, but we can make a row of touch buttons; we can't make great wireless headphones, but we can take the headphone port away. My guess is what you see now is Dell hedging its bets on where apple was headed, and compromising along the way to get a product out the door.
Either that or just a lot of drugs.

Sara, I dig your videos! I do have a question. I have been using computers since my Commodore 64 and am now a tech coordinator at my school. How do you use the function keys? I have never needed to use function keys for anything, whether it is programming, teaching, editing media, or gaming, I have never had need to use the function keys. And while I could take it or leave it, I found the touch bar a more efficient use of space.Just curious. Keep up the good work!
