As a first time artfight participant I did kind of feel like it was different than how people described it. One thing that really ended up discouraging me was a few times when the person I was attacking didn’t even leave a comment? Just ignored it. Of course I wasn’t expecting a revenge but working for hours just to be completely ignored kinda bummed me out. Not sure how normal that is but I really wish I could’ve just talked with other participants a bit more.
Yeah I agree. I don't expect a revenge at all, but it's really not much effort to type "thx" or "KDJFAJALS;AS;DL" (keyboard smash) to let the person know you appreciate their effort. I got 13 defenses this year and I DID NOT leave a single one unreplied to (unless I knew the artist out of AF and thanked them somewhere else) And I never will.
Sadly, people not responding isn't uncommon and most certainly not new. Some people might be shy, some people might just forget, some people might forget to check on AF for two weeks and then feel incredebly awkward about leaving a late comment, it happens. I think maybe leaveing a note on your profile about how comments motivate you a lot might help, but who knows. (Also, I checked your AF profile, and your art is really cute!)
When I was a beginner artist there were a handful of times I hadn’t had any responses from people I did attacks for 🙁 I’ve been hearing a lot that this year especially there’s been a lack of reception

This was my 7th year participating. Something about it did feel different. I feel like back then, people paid more attention to character rules. But as the userbase grew, including this year, I've been seeing a few cases where it seems that people's rules have gotten ignored (such as "don't draw my character like this" or "don't draw my character in mass attacks"). Besides seeing the few cases in person, there has been an increased amount of people talking about it happening constantly this year. Aside from that, a huge talking point is the dislikes for mass attacks. I personally LOVE them! I love kinda playing "Where's Waldo" by having to search for my character in a sea of like 99 other really cool characters. It's genuinely really fun, and I love them!
I've done art fight for 4 years as well, and tbh it felt colder than usual. Keep in mind I'm an adult and a professional artist, making my attacks in my free time out of nothing but just a love for the event. I don't expect revenges at all, but to have the attack I spent my only free afternoon of the work week making completely ignored because I'm not famous online is a bit disheartening tbh.
Because I didn't know I had to make OC's, I unfortunately did not join artfight this year 😭 I was not prepared this time so I'd probably wait for the next one.
This was my first year participating! I had a pretty good time I'd say. I'm not the type to go out of my way to attack people first unless i really like a design because I find a hard time getting motivated. I'm sure some peoples blood boils hearing that. Probably thinking I'm not participating correctly since I'm not going out of my way to attack people first. I only did like 3 offensive attacks. HOWEVER I think what helped me out a lot is the fact I have one OC with a really cool design and people just kept attacking him, and when people draw something dope as hell for me im instantly like "FUCK YEAH, PREPARE TO BE REVENGED" and its pretty motivating for me. Since this was my first year, I was not expecting that. Literally my goal this year was to make SIX attacks. I did more than double, i ended with 16 attacks. So, I had a pretty good year! Sad to hear others didn't have as good of a time as I did, though.
This had been my first year of artfight and I had quite a bit of fun with it, it probably helped quite a bit that I kept it in my mind that it is a art gifting game not a trading one :3
Damn, I guess I kinda was in my own bubble. I managed to do 110 attacks and I always looked for novice artists to attack, Or people who hadn't gotten art. But I did find it so strange that we in seafoam lost with almost like a million points? How is that even POSSIBLE? I did notice a lot of cheating too this year. Marking art as fully shaded when it wasn't etc. I've been in artfight for 7 years, And I got a lot of art this year too, Especially since I have a lot of artfight friends too. I had a lot of fun, I'm sorry that this year seemed like a bummer for many :(

i was honestly really surprised by a lot of the controversy and stuff! this was my first year and i dont have tiktok so i didnt even know there was a huge influx of people from there… i feel a bit glad i had a quite average experience lol
This was my first artfight and honestly seeing how ppl describe it this year I think I got on the "chill/nice" side of af? All of my interactions have been positive and honestly the only thing that was weird to me was getting around 49 defenses despite being just some AF newbie, overall on the discourse side it really looks odd that ppl are being annoyed by getting art that is "not good enough" like, it's free, it's litterally a gift, someone saw your oc among thousands and decided to draw yours, how could that be "not enough"?
Unrelated but I like the boarder around the speed paints it feels like a scrapbook or some of those sketchbook tours where they stick other materials and stickers in
the decorations around the speedpaint is so unique :O love your content and welcome to youtube!! :D about the video content: i agree with the points you made :[ the starting early point is fine to me, i think if the artist really wants to attack multiple specific people yet their art takes a long time. i havent seen much of that around though(maybe because i wasnt as active as i wanted to be so i didnt notice) about the mass attacks, ive seen a lootttt of really good mass attacks :D i can understand the frustration and dislike some people have because of the low effort attacks that got made just for points, but just because one mass attack is poorly made only for the points doesent mean that the next is also going to be the same about the beginner artists and sketches i am speechless. hating on beginners is so stupid imo, because everyone was at the same beginner level at some point ? i hate it so much when people hate on others for just starting out in art, it boils my blood. we should all encourage beginners, let them know that theyre doing great and just because their art isnt as good now, doesnt mean that its going to be like that forever and that they will improve over time. i joined artfight for the first time this year :D ive known about the event for years, but didnt have the motivation to join until this one. lets hope next year goes better >_

This was my art fight! I ended up making two ocs for the occasion, and now they are my precious babies. About the discourse, I agree with all of your points. I feel the putting down of new artists is contradictory to the concept of artfight. However, I don’t really use artfight social media so I didn’t really notice the complaints people were making out to be a big deal.
I've been participating since 2019 and I think this year was the worst by far. I never ran into any problems the previous years, but this year I felt like most people were there ONLY to get free art and do nothing in return. This is the very first year where people were not even thanking or leaving comments (which is the BARE minimum when you receive FREE art, it's not like you were granted anything in the first place). Or people being too judgy and thinking artfight attacks are commissions. The 2 last previous years I had tons of attacks, this year? Barely got anything despite attacking. 90% of the attacks I've gotten this year were last minute revenges, and the few attacks I got were ALL from friends. It's demotivating to put your heart and soul into something and get nothing (barely any thank you), I hope next year won't be the same because else I'll just drop artfight. Edit: I AM AWARE THAT NO ONE HAS TO REVENGE IF THEY DON'T WANT TO/CAN'T. But when I make 20+ attacks and get 5 revenges and barely any acknowledgement, yes that feels bad.
@@Cassetteghost yeah the ratios for attacks seemed to be pretty all over the place for most folks 🙁 in terms of reception I’ve been hearing there’s been a lot of little to no responses which is really disheartening. I think I’ve said this a million times but commenting is like…the bare minimum I think 😭😭
This was my first year on artfight but tbh I think I got a little lucky as a first timer because I actually got attacked and revenged more then I expected and got on,y positive feedback on my art I guess reason for that might also be that I have been massively improving my art over the past few months as well as semi actively using the discord to bring attention to my characters which was probably the reason for most of my defenses. Sooo yeah personally I'd say I had a pretty good time, although I definitely can see why people are complaining, and I'll most likely join in again next year :)

first year artfighter and i kind of.. forgot about artfight for like 3 weeks. i feel bad about it since i said i would revenge someone and i never did since i got art burnout and when i regained the ability to draw without feeling like a void i just wanted to draw for myself for a while, which ended up on me only really kind of wanting to in the last 3 days, and i was out those 3 days. i only ended up being able to draw an attack on a friend during said 3 days another thing that makes me feel bad is they were the only one that wasn't a friend who attacked me and i just left a comment saying i would revenge and then just disappeared for 3 weeks and when i got back, didnt revenge (i may draw it and try to find another social of theirs so i could send it to them as a thank you for the art, even if it was in artfight and it's over and im sending it to them outside of artfight) i got jealous of my friends because they kept getting attacked and i only got attacked once by someone who wasnt a friend, and all the others were from friends, all my attacks were for my friends, also theres.. mass attack drama, people taking jokes out of hand and making them an actual thing. here's to hoping next year will be better. (one of my friends i showed artfight to even quit midway since it got boring for them because they got no attacks, but i think it may be because they didnt attack anyone either. to be fair, i didnt attack anyone either but my friends, but i mostly forgot artfight existed until i saw people talking about it and its problems)
Yeah 🙁 I have a couple mutuals who got no attacks this year, I was planning to attack them but burnt out before I could 😭 wish there was a way to boost users with less attacks through the random character system Also, don’t beat yourself up on not being able to revenge!! There’s always next year when you’re (hopefully) more motivated to make an attack :3 /gen

im all for AF allowing all skill base, but i got attacked by someone who so quickly pumped out mass attacks ic ould not tell who they were drawing for myself or others. I love that any kind of art and skill is allowed but i wish people took a little more time instead of psoting a mass attack each second just to rack up points. i loved everything else about af this year tho personally /gen
