This video just keeps getting better. I wasn’t expecting the 3D print but that thing is beautiful and the end result very satisfying! Congratulations on a job well done 🙌
Thank you! I also think the fact that I am continuing to use it very happily is telling that the work I put into it was worth it. I will say, your Mini 1541 out of a USB floppy drive was inspirational in this with the difference being, I wrapped modern gear in an old case. So thank you for that!
Excellent work - it's so tidy, and I love that it still has a big ol' rocker switch and IEC power port on the back. And the front panel is a nice fit. It amazes me that these standards (5.25" drive bay, IEC power) have stood the test of time and so you can do projects like this, blending old and new. Really cool that you were able to 3D print that organizer and not harm the outer case at all. Well done!
Thank you and it was vital I preserve the original case. That is part of the engineering fun of the project. The most important feature was preserving the rocker switch on the back. Surprisingly, the switch has the right feel and is much like a real 1541. There isn't any flexing from the 3D printed support on the inside. I have noodled around the idea of what else I can to do complement this setup but I have nothing firm yet. It would be fun to be able to chain in a real 1541 or possibly design up a 1581 like case but in that same beautiful C64 beige of this device.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was a fun project that I use regularly to this day. It was a high payout project, as far as regular use goes. There really isn't anything out there that would have worked as well so this was almost necessary.
Amazing skills, ideas and fun ! Brilliant work ... My first computer was a VIC 20, the ancestor of the C64, and then of course I bought the C64 + 1541 Floppy unit. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! I only "recently" got a VIC-20 but I'm not sure where it came from. I do enjoy my original hardware to this day. Just to the right of my Commodore 64 Impostor is a real Commodore 64 with the accompanying 1541. I do enjoy the juxtaposition between the machines.
It's totally a portable, useful accessory you can use with any computer you wish. I have but I largely just keep it with my C64 'impostor' and it does get a lot of use.
I’m not a. Commodore guy but more of an Atari 8bit and Apple 2 and Mac guy. I would love to see a similar project done with an Atari drive or Apple 2 drive enclosure.
I have a parts list on my site. It was easier to do it there than in the RUclips description. The link to the CAD files are there too. cubiclenate.com/2022/12/13/c1541x-the-commodore-1541-impostor/
There's a market, you could buy dead c64's, pull the boards, swap the keyboards, and then sell as kits with printed parts. I know there's a market because SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

Fantastic, fun project and was very entertaining to watch and thought the final 3d print was genius. Thanks.

What a mad Franken-device! Absolutely marvellous! Good job.
Thank you! I enjoy this daily and there are ZERO regrets in the time and cost of making it.
Love this project! So friggin cool to re-purpose an old 1541 shell as a modern storage system.
man that some bad ass Commodore Media Center looks outstanding

Very impressive, lad. I knew you modernize a C64 disc drive. Even creating a C64 laptop is a difficult task.
Love it. I could use one with my mini PC or even my laptop for extra ports.

with the 1541 drive case empty, one could even create a 3D model of it. Where someone could potentially make a brand new case.
Cool Nate Excellence...
Thanks so much! I still see room for improvement!
Awesome Build!
Thank you!
Amazing, well done!🙂
Thank you! Maybe you can make something like this too for the C64x? 😁
A plastic 5.25 cage would be a better option for holding the 5.25 device in place.
Maybe get a magnetic build plate to make it easier for removing your 3D prints?
Brilliant!
Thank you! I enjoy this accessory daily!

Nice ! ! ! 👍
Thanks! I super like it. Even after months of using it, I super, super like it.
Pretty clever!
Thank you!
Very cool. I'm curious is this also possible on a cbm 4040 dive drive?
Macinleap or Tumbletosh? that is the question at hand
Can you share part list and where you got the parta from?

What about that flat SATA cable that would take a 256GB SSD drive.
I used those SATA connections for the front of the device. It works well but the power connection is only somewhat useful.
Waiting for the gpio display :')
I'll get on it next, for real. I have everything ready, I just need to do a test build so that I can do this in as few shots as possible. 😁
@@CubicleNate interesting video by the way, now waiting for the next mod 😂

Practically OEM LMAO
🤷 I mean, it sort of is... just modified a bit. 🙂
@@CubicleNate it was a direct quote from the video. Hilarious.
