You probably won't see this, But I live in Minnesota and my parents would occasionally take me railfanning. This would have been at a Northstar station, Behind a target. On one of the days, By my best recollection, I saw A B40-8, So it was probably 570.This would have been in 2016 or 2017. Recently (as in as soon as 2022), My parents were driving over Northtown yard by Minneapolis, And I think I saw either 570 or 563. It makes me sad they're going away, And in my recent drives over there I haven't seen either. At least they're probably immortalized in Models.
563 is in storage in Northtown so there's a good chance that's the one you saw. I do miss the Dash-8s, but I'm glad I got to see them when I did over the years.
Massachusetts Cape Code railroad and Pan Am Railways have some of the last Dash 8s and FL9s. Dash 8s are very abundant on Pan Am railways. While The cape cod railroad owns some New Haven FL9s. Massachusetts is amazing for railfanning. I recommend it.

It was either July or August this year, I was working overnight in Auburn Yard. I was on the lead when the LVJEVE went through around 1am, with good ol' 563 leading. Hearing the horn echo for a few miles was one of the best things I've heard in quite some time, as there is no other horn quite like it in the Northwest. I know what reputation the motor had among crews, heh, I just wish I could've experienced operating it though, if not just to marvel at it. The same goes for 505. Whatever happens to 563, I'm certainly gonna miss it
@@ironhorsemedia2881 crews absolutely hated that motor. Plagued with mechanical problems from time to time, and not to mention a cramped cab. But if they could get it to pull, it would pull like no tomorrow
@ 4:07 it appears 563 is doing Jingle Bells on the bell rather than the horn. 😂 With all the modern power coming into the picture, you really come to appreciate the old school power that roams around out there. Something I'm always kicking myself about because I seem to have taken a lot of old school power for granted, only to find out right before or oftentimes after the fact that they're all gone.
Mike, my train-obsessed three year old loves all of your videos. We’ve been watching since he was 1. We appreciate your love for trains and commitment to educating us on them!
Good news is BNSF 570 is still in service. She was last seen in Lincoln, Nebraska leading the yard shuttle. Edit: She was last seen in Missouri, not Nebraska.
563 is in great shape and LUGO...”Layed-up good order”...no mechanical issues, and she has PTC...doesn’t make any sense to put her in storage, especially since the railroad is in short supply of locomotives. She’s not for sale, and hasn’t been taken off the roster, so perhaps she’ll just sit idle until they figure out they need her again. 563 was on the SPUD local in Wenatchee last winter/spring. My hog and I got to bring her back west over the cascades, not leading, but for power to get over the mountains on a Q train. It’s still a very strong engine, not worn out yet. The 505 is still on the roster as well. Last I checked, she had a bad turbo and is slated for repair. 505 is not in as good as shape however, she’s tired. Trucks are worn out, everything in the cab is worn out, engine is tired...but she’s still got some life in her. They need to fix her.
Caught BNSF #563 *ONCE* at the same location on the same train at 01:53 in the 2nd position back on May 6th, 2019. This was before I knew of how special the locomotive was.
I used to see the ATSF GE 8-40 's and the EMD GP-60's and 60B's run through Devore on the way up of down from Cajon Pass. Those were the backbone of the ATSF Fast Intermodal service from LA to Chicago. They did render great service.
I hoped I would have caught #563 before they moved it to storage, but I guess I missed it. Very glad you filmed it before it was moved to somewhere else!
**Sigh** Farewell Dash 8s! Always had the best RS3L’s and RS5T’s! Sad to see them go, but just like other engines, it had to happen eventually. You will greatly be missed! 😔
These locomotives were my favorite but I’m a bit sad their retired from service but well done mike! Well done! It’s just still sad why would these trains would be retired, I was praying for 563 to be sent to a museum in Anaheim California but that’s not the case
I thought the future was going to be good, but all it is for me...is just hell, every locomotive retiring, and I always keep missing out, because my family is just low on money. I wished I was born in the 1970s.
I imagine BNSF will try to replace all Geeps soon except the 60/B/Ms and rebuilds, along with most 6 axle EMDs except for SD40-2s, MACs, SD75Ms, and ACes. I also would presume that BNSF will rebuild all GP60/Bs, MACs, SD60Ms, SD75Ms, and SD40-2s, along with the SD75Is and GP60Ms they've already rebuilt.
I would be surprised if they retire too many more Geeps other than some of the ones that have not been upgraded or rebuilt with "Dash 3" electronics because there aren't really any locomotives currently being mass produced that would be suitable replacements.
Most of the b40-8 and b40-8ws are in storage in Galveston to waiting for scrap with other Ex SF and BN SD45-2s and -2Bs, SDP40s old SWs executive macs and SD75s however 570 and 563 aren’t there, but they aren’t the only ones not in Galveston BNSF 578 is on a dead track in north yard Saginaw tx.
Nooooooo I saw this at Murray Yard about a year ago and didn't have my camera and missed my one chance to get a picture or video of it :((((((((((((( I might've got it in one of my videos somewhere though Idk. I read the description and it said BNSF 563 was sidelined so BNSF 570 might still be in service and it runs in the Midwest where I live (hence my username) so I might still have time to somehow find it for one final time.

That would be neat
Actually they’re selling it to CN or sadly scrapping it :(
Oof
There is one in Illinois preserved at the Illinois Railway Museum
Has the right horn! Sad to see these classic diesels slowly disappearing but fantastic job as always Mike!

Most Dash 8-40BWs are being rebuilt into Dash 8-40BWRs for use on locals, to replace older EMDs.
You're right, a lot of them have been rebuilt.
Just as a notation question, is a saying Dash 8-40BW the same as B40-8W?
