This thing is legit cool, but also man it's going to be amazing for making corporate slideshow ukelele music
This thing has some strong C418 Minecraft soundtrack vibes
Exactly what came to my mind as well.
It reminds me more of C418's "One" album, rather than his Minecraft songs.
He uses a kalimba-ish/xylophone-ish instrument all throughout it, it's really pretty.
no way this was literally my first thought as well, we should call the genre "MineCore"
pandrum vibe
Korg is like what android used to be 20 years ago. Experimental but inviting and intentionally left unfinished, a master class of community engagement.
I started doing all my production on iPad.. still on the og iPad Pro and Gadget works perfectly, now it's Au3 all the way I can use so many other iOS apps with it but the core Gadgets are really nice.
It's like if a kalimba and a synth had a baby - love it! For anyone interested you can also look up the earlier iteration of this instrument, it was shown as a much more raw prototype last year at superbooth '23 (there's a nice video of Tats explaining in detail the technology and science behind all the overtones - he seems like such a smart and creative dude!). It's really interesting to see how this has progressed comparing these two videos, so I'm looking forward to when they finally have a working production model and I can grab my own. In the meantime I'll grab this samplepack, thanks David! :)
The moment I heard it, I thought "skalynthba." I'd love to see more stuff like this.
that's why it's called the volca kalimba
@@adeniranbalthazar5700 Didn't see or hear that name anywhere. Is that the official title for it?
It's like an electric (tine) piano. Rhodes, Whirlitzer, Hohner....
I've never made music but I love your videos. I'll eventually get into playing and making music. I appreciate you.
Do it now! It is so much fun!
You can do it! 🎹🎛️🎚️🌌💖
Best time is to start now 😁
Start now. It’s the best therapy.
I recently recorded a cover of Radioheads “no surprises”. And I used this Korg Prototype sample that you released for us before this video even came out. I’ll see if I have time to record a video and I’ll share it with you. This Korg sample sounds great! Thank you David!
That instrument looks so refreshing. Like the best of both worlds. Love it.
I also wanted to add, that many of these sounds can be found, rather naturally within the wide variety of Indonesian Gamelan music, particularly here, in an instrument which comes in a variety of octaves (sets of 6 drums each, called a Bonang. Very pleasing.
Yes the sounds it makes are very gamelanesque, and also a little like prepared piano, but I feel like the basic idea could be applied to differently shaped tines that would produce other styles of sound too, imagine using springs for instance
What a fascinating instrument!! Long-time (ish) watcher but first-time commenter-I keep meaning to say that I absolutely adore how relaxed your videos are. I love getting to take little musical journeys with such a passionate & chill guide :-)
Wonderful video and love how you mix your curiosity with your community efforts. Respect 🎉
The intro BGM is nice. I like it.
Thank for uploading the samples. What a pleasant surprise. Since I found out this instrument, Ive been a huge fan waiting for its release.
Thx for the SUPA cool Korg Berlin Prototype 8 / Decent Sampler you put together! This thing is really nice!
Damn! I want one of these new Korg Phase 8 synths. That's mighty cool. Thanks as always for your fun videos and sample packs!
Very inspiring! Thanks for the great review again! ✌️❤😊
Superbooth looked epic. That Korg instrument is so wild. Print your own knobs?! Tight
I’ve been listening to French 79 a lot lately and it’s been fun to pick out pieces of gear he uses. I’m fairly certain he loves the microcosm as much as you do. Thanks!
Literally waiting for your showcases everyday.
This channel is a gem ❤
I'm very little of a musician, but I'm very passionate about instruments. I would feel like heaven on an outside festival like this. Birds and synths. ❤
Thanks for the sample, David!
That’s what I really like about my city in the summertime, innovative music in nature right at the heart of the town in a chill atmosphere. Greetings from Berlin!
I've been waiting for this thing to release for so long
absolutely can't wait,
Really very lovely, so thanks a lot!
As always, thank you so much for your videos! Wow, I have already tried this wonderful DS instrument once it was released and now you have finally shown how even better it is in real life!
As a kalimba owner my first thought about placing stuff on the tines was "I wish they had placed a tremolo chain on it". If this is basically an auto-kalimba, then a chain should make some really crazy and fun sounds.
Love the concept, fascinating instrument, very playable
Tats is great, I love watching him talk about instruments and music technology, his mind always seems so open to exploration, and you can almost feel the creative ideas bouncing out of him. He's truly inspirational.
Thx David for the free samples and all you do. And thx to all the talented ppl. (Yes it's my thanky you day 😊)
The synth has a somewhat nostalgic feeling - I like it
I really enjoyed having the chance to play this on the last day. It was a lot of fun. Looking forward to trying out your decent instrument. Thanks for sharing.
Reminds me of John Cage's songs for "prepared piano", wherein the piano has pieces of metal and rubber placed in between the strings at specific locations.
Exactly what I thought of as well
This is very cool, I love the organic sound of it. It has come a long way since last year's prototype.
Amazing, thank you!
Brilliant vid.
Thanks ✅
Fantastic ' ...great sampling, great tones '
I'm a musician and feeling at home with your vids. It's soothing.
Great video! Would be neat to see an experience like this in the US
You've made me realise how versatile acoustic instruments are. People can find new ways of engaging with them for decades, while a lot of electronic instruments seem to be designed much more rigidly. I love the idea of this new Korg instrument, because its analogue elements make it a lot more versatile, without the designers needing to add any more features.
You are a gift to this world fr fr
Now that is really innovative, a blending of an old traditional instrument with some technology. I'd be pretty keen to get one for sure.
Look mom, an electric xylophon!
Kalimba
Sounds and plays more like a kalimba
OK, this is super cool! I love that you can choose your own resonators. I also like the idea of 3D printing faceplates and stuff too. THANKS for making this into a plugin instrument!! I wonder if the birds liked the sound from the synths. They seemed pretty comfortable with humans around. LOL
This might be really good for synthy jazzy stuff. There's an instrument called the Hang, which is used extensively by a band I really enjoy, Portico Quartet. This has a somewhat similar sound to that, only more synthy and with less resonance. Will surely try it out later. Thanks for another great instrument, David!
Edit: after trying it out my suspicions were correct. The middle of this instrument's range very much sounds like a crystal clear Hang drum! Great for jazz, and better yet it's completely free!
inspire as usual! thx
looks so cool, and Tats seems so nice
Looks a damn sight warmer there than it is here. It's late Autumn here. Recently I went out to do some filming for a recent video project, and the frost was unreal.
Awesome. DIdn't know about this festival before!
it’s really cool!
@@DavidHilowitzMusic Hey David, so, I got a question,
I’m 15, and
Recently, I’ve had figured out the Optigan, and I thought it was a really cool instrument! I was wondering if you can help me make something a tad bit similar? While I don’t have a money (as of now) I was thinking if you could help me with with the electronic/coding of he electronic chord organ instrument!, I was thinking about me 3d printing this instrument and mailing it to you so you can work on the electronic wacky stuff,
I also have an calculator you can use to work on the screen so I can access the settings n stuff! I guess reusing the calculator into something new!
If you want to help, please, reply! Or just reply no, it’s your decision,
Gosh I want one and I know I won't afford one. Pain of a musicians life haha Thank you for the Decent Sampler patch!
Tatsu seems like such a cool person.
I mean he is a major part of why we have Korg Volca’s so yeah, pretty cool person
Hey David! So cool to know you were in Berlin! If you're coming again next year, I would be more than happy to host you in our guest room - we live quite central and I can make decent coffee! :)
Very cool machine indeed!
my favorite synth geek on youtube 💪💪
geil man! ich wünscht ich wär da gewesen, wenn ich das so sehe
Snatched this up as soon as I saw it in the sample pack browser.
I already make EXTENSIVE use of DS in my music and I can't wait to try this one out!
I need this
This looks dope
I want one
You created music. You created samples. You gifted samples. You also created a wonderful video impression of the event. Love this video for its entertainment value and the inspiration it gave!
I love how this sounds, and I really don’t understand why so many people here and elsewhere are putting it down. It’s such a work of creativity and love from one of the synth geniuses of our time.
I could hear this in music you might hear in a spa or something like that, maybe mixed with a soft pad, possibly one from the Wavestation and/or subtle nature sounds like birds and a soft babbling brook.
I love Berlin; it's a beautiful city. I could live there and be so happy. So interesting, so much going on there. I'd never get bored there.
Oh, it's same location where Make Fair Berlin 2018 was happening! Nice place.
Interesting report and interview followed by a jam and a sample pack?! What more could I want in a synth video
Very cool.
great to finally meet you in the real as the kids say :) The fact you caught the birds and the buchla in one shot is just super booth in a nutshell.
Very cool
cool video, thanks
I have been there and I loved the glas instrument in the entrance area. :)
that was really cool!
Imagine eating toast and playing this thing at the same time. 👀
As a retired engineer I’ve long recognized that Roland is run by engineers who happen to play music while Korg is run by musicians who happen to be engineers. This is a vast simplification but it makes the point: I would have been absolutely gobsmacked if Roland had produced this, but Korg? I can only smile. That’s my Korg, nice job guys and gals.
Btw David, not sure of your ambitions, if you’re more liable to open a Tindie storefront or enter into a partnership with a music gear manufacturer, but many of your videos could be classified as Delightful Instruments, which perhaps could be flashed onto a Pi or packaged as a 1010 Black/Blue/etc. box. Think of it, a new Omnichord or Vocaloid or even this Korg venture. Hilowitz Instruments! In a box, with knobs and a screen 😎
With adding the wood, it's also a kind of prepared kalimba. 🙂
I definitely need to get to Superbooth some day!
That is great.
Now I want to go to a synth festival too.
Man, the cacophony of all that gear at once…. 😂😂😂 that’d be awesome!
Buy one, this is going to be the damn TB303 all over again.
The Zoom H4N is one amazing beast. Mine currently is acting as an audio interface on the laptop I record my weekly radio show on. Such a versatile device!
It really is. I can't think of any piece of audio gear I've gotten more value out of.
It’s like a super advanced Kalimba:)
Thank you for this wonderful video. If there is one regret in my life, that would be never learning to read music.
Video turned out great Dave, nice recap of the week and nice showcase of the prototype.
Wish there was a forest of gear to check out every week, but I guess pawn shops will have to do until next year 😅😂
Thanks! You said it. I’m literally heading to a thrift shop right now. 😅
Thanks! You said it. I’m literally heading to a thrift shop right now. 😅
Ah shame I didn't bump into you at Superbooth. Definitely woukd have said hello :) Hope you enjoyed it!
I would love a tutorial about how to turn audio recordings into a decent sampler library. I have an old Electone I’d like to turn into a sample library for fun.
Are you at all familiar with the instruments created by Andy Thurlow for his Anarchestra? Some sounds of these new Korg devices remind me of Andy's absolutely wonderful stuff!
I used to make kalimbas where it was easy to loosen 1 support bracket slightly, and then slide the tines forward and backwards to adjust the tuning, and then retighten the support bracket for best resonance. I'm hoping these are retunable, in a relatively easy way, too.
I'm going to make an electric kalimba too. Thanks for the idea. Don't even need to buy it from Korg.
Beautiful beautiful beautiful ❤
Its like a futuristic kalimba/thumb piano
Looks like I missed Superbooth this year too...
I love it. Like being able to mess with a Rhodes, or Whirly, while playing it, but scaled down to just a handful of notes. I fear however, it's going to be really expensive, because Korg is taking a bit of a risk on this project.
A Korg version of a hammered dulcimer.
they showed this at the 2023 superbooth and like 2 people talked about it
i love this channel, also this synth.
The mechanical / engineering process behind the synth is interesting, but what comes out of it in terms of sound can be easily replicated by physical modeling VSTs, such as Chromaphone. I wonder what type of really original sounds could be made out of it.
This is good
0:44
Almost as good as when Leo Fender invented it. They should keep going until they get the Rhodes in a few years.
prepared synth!
exactly!!
Strong gamelan vibes.
3:45 was that Adam Savage I spied in the crowd?!
what are those calculators that look like a pocket operator ??? cool video !!
Thank you for this generous gift David… excuse the pun, but this instrument is very exciting )))))))))))
You kinda glossed over it but can we expect a video on the Voltage Lab 2 in the near future ? 🤔
It feels like Korg have often positioned themselves as the creators of more unconventional instruments than their bigger Japanese counterparts such as Roland and Yamaha. Instruments that are not as sophisticated in terms of the actual underlying technology, but making interesting use of more established things. This prototype is a great example of that.
oooh, an electric piano
