I'm thinking about getting out of my desk job to get into welding. I hate my desk job. I fell in love with welding after watching welding videos and buying an everlast welder and teaching myself. I want to take courses. It will be hard work and scary but I hope to make a career in something I love to do.

Anywhere You Live, Welding Jobs are Needed. From a 1-Year to a 4-Year College Experience. The opportunities are Endless... T J (Tom) Vanderloop, AWS & LSME, Director of Operations in Technical-Training
It’s a tough, dirty and dangerous job. At 28 my eyesight and hearing is already fucked, chronic back and neck pain and horrible lung capacity. I’m not even 1/3rd through my work-life and already feel like I’m 50.
Thanks for sharing, sorry to hear that. What trades do you recommend? Seems like with every trade, there's huge negatives brought up about it to be honest.
0:23 bleh stay away from his job. Used to also weld mufflers (ridiculously monotonous) and it was a living hell. Did it for 6 months and hated it. The ugly side of welding for sure!
I’m a project manager in cybersec and I bet I’m getting replaced by AI long before a robot can perform some of these intricate non-repetitive welding tasks. You’ll always need welding experts- it’s a job for the future.
becoming a welder its like throwing your life to the unknown path nowdays in factorys most of the welding its done by robots and you gotta beat the robot so you could get the best seat anywhere else thats pretty much how i see it
I have zero experience with this. I have a degree in economics and I work in a cubicle for the government. I absolutely cannot do bureaucracy anymore and I think welding will open up opportunities. Where do I start? Lol I gotta DO something. Create or repair something. I can work hard and the desk life is draining my soul. I'm gonna keep researching.
Correction. There's a growing demand for welders....until they can get welders to make something to replace themselves so mass production with no humans can happen....It's gunna happen people. Until then ima keep goin so i can be one :3 Something ive wanted to do since i was 15.
not much you might not even need an education for it depending on your experiences, especially if you only do simple mig welding anyone can do it and it gets boring fast as hell, usually
I’ve been both and the pay really varies on skill I didn’t like doing machine work because it got really boring and repetitive even though it payed well I get paid $2000 less a year as a welder but I don’t stand still all day so it’s a trade off for me
You aren't wrong. If they can exploit you, they will. Mandatory 10 to 12 hour days for 6 years. my the time flies. Getting my CAD cert. finished this year. I'm out, someone else can weld stainless pipe.
Chris K good luck with that... the demand for pipeline welders fluctuates with the price of oil. Many of the pipeliners here in my oil town are packing it up and heading home. It's very cyclical.
Sure welding can be a job with a lot of different tasks to do for variety which is great *but what the welding industry don't tell you* is that a huge chunk of industries are completely monotonous, having you weld literally the exact same pieces hundreds of them every single day at work stressing over the fact that you must weld this many today and the numbers only increase slowly over time, with a mentally draining work Place like this giving you a low salary because it's easy just boring. That shit will drive you crazy unless you like being an emotionally dead person doing mundane things all day, just keep that in mind. But it's up to you where you work. You can choose not to work in those places but then you're gonna have to become a better welder. Speaking from experience and contacts. Sure the government needs welders and all of that, but they're glorifying it way too much. Even here in Sweden. Do whatever you want, you're not gonna save your country because you became a monotonous industrial welder. I still weld though but there must be variety in my job.
All this from some one who cant spell WELDOR right ! Its not that tough AWS ! ER is the machine . OR is the operator ! I am a certified Weldor ! I run a welder all day long ! How serious can you be ? When you wont spell the word right ? Might as well call yourself Sesame Street Welding Society !

This message goes out to all future and potential welding students out there reading this: don't invest your time and money in becoming a welder! Why? Machines are becoming a huge part of the work force and will soon replace humans. Yes, there will be some human welding but it will be very little and the pay won't be that great. Most pipe welding will become a thing of the past because of all the special automatic tools designed to do just that and much better! It's best to invest your time in something that is for sure going to still be in demand, for example: electrical engineering, mechatronics, carpentry and so much more!
If that ever happens, then I will adapt and change. It isn't happening now, so shove your advice in an uncomfortable spot. I barely paid anything to learn the skills I needed in community college, and I make pretty decent money right now welding. I know I could make more, but I'm still at the start of my career. Even if what you were saying is true, you can't replace infrastructure overnight. It wouldn't happen until well after most people starting a welding career *today* are retired.
Only way a company would actually invest in automating a welding process is if there is a repeated weld that needs to be done over and over again (like the muffler manufacturer in the video). I think welders will be in high demand way into the future as will most trades like plumbing, HVAC, and electricians. You mention engineering, but that is an extremely tough degree to get, especially if your a weak math student and some people probably don't want a massive amount of student loan debt if they can't get financing for college elsewhere.
I have loved welding ever since learning how to weld with my everlast welder. I hope there is a job out there for me because if I can get paid for doing what I love that would be the ultimate.
Welding emits UV radiation that causes a range of cancers, also the welding smoke is toxic. This job may be well payed, but you put your health in danger. This should be a job for robots.
For those who say that robots will take over this job, then let's just weld Ironmen. The body of a machine with the heart of a human. Welderman!
I got hooked welding learning with my powertig welder. Becoming a welder is the next logical step for me.
AWS is an excellent organization for both art & science...the skills are endless. We all need visual-skills in metal fabrication and welding. Career opportunities are endless.
