Can't be done. Random lyrics say more than badly written lyrics, lies more than that, when you know how to listen. If you hear that way, you can see the sense this song could make, if you knew what the references tie to. And the subconscious doesn't lie at the deepest levels, once you set the hook.

@@interdimensionalsteve8172 Conscious meaning, sure. But that isn't all there is to a person's actions. One of the hardest things for people to accept in psychology is that you can do things completely on purpose without consciously knowing you're doing anything at all.
His idea was that all you need is a great hook, and the rest of the words don't matter. Genius.
If I remember correctly he wrote this song when he was playing smaller venues and he was disgruntled that nobody was paying attention to him so he just made drivel lyrics. Beck does all kinds of music, the whole Mutations album is a masterpiece. Coincidentally, he was also the dude that Kanye cut off at one of the awards shows to say someone else deserved the award.....lol Beck plays like 400 instruments.....

Beck is the king of psychedelic nonsensical lyrics. So many great songs from his first album. “Soul Sucking Jerk” is a great one for lyrics. Pretty much anything from the first and 2nd albums are all great. Or maybe from any of his albums. He’s a total genius and no song sounds the same.

Sorry if anyone else has said this already, but Beck didn’t “write” this song, per se. He literally stood in front of a microphone and, through ‘stream of consciousness’, recorded the lyrics- nothing was written down beforehand, he simply sang whatever came to mind in the moment….
as opposed to stream of unconsciousness. lol
Beck is awesome on so many levels. So unique. Some of my favorites are BEER CAN, DEBRA, BLACK TAMBOURINE, and NOVACANE.

Beck is a mad musical genius. Other artist often invite him to play with them at music festivals... and it's crazy how he can insert sounds into their songs and completely keep the crowd flowing with it.
I guess he quit school and went to "poetry slams" I guess it is sort of a "beatnik' type thing. But , it worked out for him, he wrote a bunch of cool stuff.
Beck has a very interesting catalog. Each album is usually a vibe. Still going strong too! Check out 'Debra' for a soulful laugh.
Beck is a great artist, and his band is amazing. They mix rock, rap, funk, and country.

I got to see Beck live around the time Odelay came out. I have got to say, he is an AMAZING performer. He doesn't just get up there and sing. He is a consummate showman, and none of the other concerts I've ever been to ever had nearly as much frenetic energy oozing out of every second like his did. It was remarkable. There was a brass section on stage at one part, he entered on a slide before one song, he was always running around the stage and there were tons of other performers backing him up, it was just the greatest show, I HIGHLY recommend seeing him in concert if you ever get the chance.
I bought the Beck album on vinyl because I was going through a revival phase in the mid 90s of bringing back the best format for music. 👍🏼
Welcome to Beck's catalogue =) One thing to understand about Beck is that he doesn't care so much about the lyrics. It's whether or not you feel the music.

Beck is massively talented. This was his first big song and I loved it. "Heart Is A Drum" came out a few years ago and is amazing and I love the video (has a bit of nostalgia in it).

Odelay is a very eclectic, interesting album. It's my favorite from Beck. Devil's Haircut is an amazingly catchy, creative song (just like Loser, although Loser is on the Mellow Gold album). I absolutely love you two! Thank you for your videos!

For me Beck’s Sea Change, Mutations, Mellow Gold, Morning Phase and Odelay albums are in perpetual rotation. Dude is a musical genius whose diverse catalog varies greatly, both sonically and in genre.

If I remember correctly Beck bet a record producer he could write the most random song about nothing, just a collection of words and make it a hit. Thus Loser was born.
This isn't true. Beck was a relative unknown and didn't have a record deal. He thought the song was mediocre at best and released it only after the insistence of the producer. 500 copies on vinyl. A college radio station was the first to play it and the rest is history.
