Actually, listen harder. Read the lyrics while the song is playing. It seems like a random collage but all circling around the theme of "loser " gambling, drugs, poverty, suicide, lost time....

    • @DoubleMonoLR
      @DoubleMonoLR 8 месяцев назад

" I'd make up these ridiculous songs just to see if people were listening. 'Loser' was an *extension* of that."
Although the song was created spontaneously, Beck has claimed to have had the idea for the song since the late 1980s; he once said, "I don't think I would have been able to go in and do 'Loser' in a six-hour shot without having been somewhat prepared. It was accidental, but it was something that I'd been working toward for a long time."
(After trying to rap like Chuck D) According to Beck, the line that became the song's chorus originated because "When [Stephenson] played it back, I thought, 'Man, I'm the worst rapper in the world, I'm just a loser.'
"The raps and vocals are all first takes. If I'd known the impact it was going to make, I would have put something a little more substantial in it." - so seems more like he was playing around/experimenting, rather than trying to prove anything.
He also did folk-ish hip-hop with "gold chains".

I had the privilege of seeing Beck right before he got big. He played a small club, laid back enough that me and a couple friends attending with me just sat on the stage, leaning up against one of the monitors. He was so chill. He used an old Fisher Price megaphone for voice distortion and chatted with the crowd like we were all just hanging out.
One of the best shows of the early 90s.

Wow ! I’ve been waiting . This was Beck’s 1st SINGLE in 1993 off of his 3rd studio album “Mellow Gold” (1994). Bear with me. His 5th studio album “ Odelay” ( 1996) contained “Where It’s At” & “The New Pollution” which reached a huge new audience. I HIGHLY suggest you listen to those 2 albums in their entirety back to back before diving into the rest of his work . They are amazing perfect albums you definitely need to hear off vinyl with headphones . 👍🎸✌️

I was in high school when this came out. It was very inspiring. I could do the slide guitar on my crappy $100 acoustic guitar, and the lyrics were just gold for an awkward, slightly disaffected, apathetic young man from the wrong side of the tracks. I had got to the point where I was no longer ashamed of growing up in the trailer park. Music was my refuge from the not so great reality of my life. This one was right up my alley. It's a classic and one that I will still break out on occasion when pick up an acoustic guitar. It amazes me how many people think they've never heard it until it gets to the chorus.

Thanks for the reaction, y'all. Poor Asia trying to listen to the words and getting confused and BJ just jammin' out. 😂
There are many Beck songs where the lyrics make sense ('Lost Cause', 'Missing', 'Nobody's Fault But My Own', most of the more mellow tunes, actually), but 'Loser' is not one of them. He has a huge and widely varied catalog, you should def check out more. He's honestly one of the best artists around and highly underappreciated.
Some trivia: Bob Dylan said in an interview after Beck's 'Odelay' album came out, "What do you think of this kid called Beck? I want to make a record the way he makes records." Beck opened for Johnny Cash in what might've been the oddest billing ever in 1995. JC had never heard Beck play, but he said later, "I listened to him backstage and I was so impressed with the way that he could do Appalachian music, like a Hillbilly, he's really good at it. And then his own sort of songs." JC liked the track "Rowboat" so much that he covered it on his 1996 record 'Unchained'. He said: “It sounded like something I might have written or might have done in the sixties when I was going through some weird times.”

Street tough: "Yo soy predador" (I'm a predator)
Beck: "I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me"
Sounds like a macho throwdown on the street in LA, and when the Latin guy makes his threat-brag, Beck responds with disdain for own danger, he shrugs at the prospect of getting picked on -- sort of saying "you win, don't waste your time on me, I'm not even worth the effort" -- Beck did say that he just walked out the door of the flop he was living in and described what he saw around him

Beck is very well known for his quirky and fun songs, but he has one of the most melancholy and sad albums I've ever heard, which is "Sea Change". The song "Ship In a Bottle" from that album is such a floaty but burdensome song, there's not really anything quite like it.

You should check out "Satan Gave Me A Taco" - one of Becks greatest (at least in my opinion). I had just turned 16 and at a house party the first time I heard it and been in love ever since.

you give Beck a genre of Music. He is going to make an amazing song no matter what song style you picked. Punk. Hip Hop, Metal. Pop. anything..literally anything.

I'd love to see you react to Phoebe Snow. You may have done "17", I'm not sure, but feel you'd really enjoy "Poetry Man". Little jazzy
