This came out in 1987. It was very popular on the radio. Some DJs mentioned the message, but most didn’t. I was 18 years old. Every time I heard this, I wept inside for all the nameless/faceless children in this situation!! Unfortunately, 35+ years later, I still weep!! There could be a “Luca” down the street! One of my teenage daughter’s friends could be a “Luca!” I pray that someday, there will be no more “Luca’s!!!!”
Thanks so much for your empathetic reaction! I was in abusive and violent relationships as well - you get stucked within when you grow up feeling worthless, blaming yourself! It’s though to step out of this circle but you can do it!!! We just need empowerment and voices to stand up for us so that we can do it for ourselves! So thanks for your empowerment
Every day in every way all we can do is try to be a little kinder, and to look out for those ones around us that might need help, and help if we can. 💖 Only love is real. Only love can heal. Thanks for this one!
It's interesting watching people listen and then react to this song for the first time. The tune is so snappy and catchy...fun. The person reacting will usually start with a smile, getting ready to get all into the song...then bam! Like a smack in the face the lyrics are dropped...and so is the smile. You did a fantastic job with this reaction. You were very sensitive and heartfelt...cudos!
Thank you for understanding the gravity of this song. Other reaction videos for this song totally missed the message. But you got it. You have a heart!
Good on you Sceez!!! Me either- came from this exact background and now I will straight up bust a head if I even suspect it is happening, Thanks brother
My husband and is roommate watched a dude kick his girl down a flight of stairs so they returned him the favor. They went to jail and had to sit there all weekend while she bailed her man out. When they got back to the apartment the couple had moved. Then about 5 years later he and I were at a friends house and saw a guy across he street beating on his girl so the guys went across the street and detained him till the cops got there. We had to testify in court what we witnessed. When my husband was 5 his dad beat on them and his mom so this was something he has always been passionate about.
"Yes, I think you've seen me before" -- Luka is watching carefully to see what people are feeling - like a dog'es eyes flick back and forth when people are talking, trying to understand what the mood is - the child is operating on full defensive mode all the time
Mad props to you for completely and fully dissecting and understanding what this song is all about in your first listen. It's a devastating song that pretty much brings me to tears every time I hear it, even 36 years later.
You're really good in react to songs and videos with such themes, I saw this by "Soul Asylum - Runaway Train" and this one too, so I recommend "Babyface - How come, How long" for your next reaction.
Old soul you are. You are very intelligent with this stuff. You either have experienced some of this or you knew kids. You will use this to help others.
Such a sad song about child abuse from the child's (Luka's) point of view told effectively through song. Through music and lyrics via Suzanne Vega, Luka is trying to rationalize the abuse that has happened to him. This song touched many people when it came out in 1987 because it connected to both victims and non-victims of child abuse. The uptempo music was meant to add contrast with the harsh reality of Luka's painful situation.
Stop abuse, I can trace at least 5 generations of physical abuse in my family. My great grandmother was probably the worst from what other family members have said. My brothers have said we want to stop this cycle, now my youngest brother is expecting another grandchild. I know it’s said too often but if you see it say something. My teachers could have said something because I was always bruised. They could brush that off as a bruise from football, wrestling, or just something I got fighting or just messing around.
You're a sensitive dude my guy. These songs that made me cry when I was a teen, dude 30 yrs later stills gets it and feels it. The kids are alright... kudos!
I remember my little brother when he was about 3 running around with 2 black eyes and people thought he was being abused. The thing is one of them was really from getting hit with the door knob when I (age 10) flung the door open. The other he got the very next day. My aunt told him to tie his shoe but he was slow about it so she knelt down to do it for him. Ended up blacking his other eye with her knee. We laugh about it now but my mom was pretty freaked out about it at the time.
First time hearing this song. I'm right with you when you say that you can't just sit and let it keep happening. There were numerous times I called the cops if I knew neighbors were fighting. Last year, I literally saw this young man (25ish) kick his mother down to the ground. I called the cops immediately and they came to talk to her, then they came and told me that she denied it all and said she was just fine. My brother knew them and he let them know "my sister doesn't stand for any of that. She will call the cops every time." It's because I have been physically abused by relatives and boyfriends. I wish I would have had someone to make those calls for me or to stand up for me. I once drove 3 hours to check on my best friend. All I had to hear from a mutual friend was that she said, "if anything happens to me, it was him." I had just finished my 10 hour shift at work at like 3am, drove home to pack a bag and then drove 3 hours to her town. On my way, I called the police department and told them I wanted them to do a welfare check on her. They said she was just fine - "they were sleeping." So the next day I texted her that I was in town and I had gotten a hotel room. She invited me over and while I was there they said a cop had stopped by last night. They didn't know who called the PD. I looked her husband right in the eyes and said "It was ME!" And I slapped my chest. I looked at her and I said, "NOTHING is gonna happen to you! Not on my f*ckin watch!" I wanted him to know it was me, that I'm not afraid of him. I'm not afraid to just pop up unexpectedly, to call the cops, to do WHATEVER I CAN for HER, even if I have to fight him myself! And if anything was to happen to me, my brother would be after him. Don't f*ck with my sis! Of course they both denied it all, but months later their daughter (7 years old at the time) told me in private that her dad shoved her mom down and was dragging her by her hair, and she said she was so scared and sad. It had happened a while before she told me, but I told her to call me and let me know if anything ever happens again and she said Ok. Their 2 youngest had phones and only had a select few phone numbers in their phones -- my number was one of them.
Hey Sceez, I myself am a victim of abuse primarily sexual. It can be easy to ignore it but you said you couldn't take it. Thank you. I hope you give some retribution to these bastards.
I thought your reaction here was good. The way you expressed how you personally feel about the subject of the song helps to get the message across to anyone who views this reaction video.
No she wasn’t, Martina McBride does Independence Day and Broken Wing, Wait in the truck by Hardy ft Lainey Wilson all about DV, John Michael Montgomery does the Little Girl and Jason Michael Carroll does Alyssa Lies both about child abuse
Yeah, I feel you. Do you feel a small boned white woman in an abusive relationship? Your IMMMEDIATE thoguht is probably yes! Hey, I'm a white man who was in a long relationship with a black woman, who got a lot of racism from part of her family. So, just think twice, thrice or even four times before you answer. It can be hard to put yourself in someone's situation, and our mixed race daugther so definitely agrees.
i too am one of those thats was abused M-ly.. Ph-ly.. S-ly.. was always told you are not my f-ing kid on top of it... he even r.. me from 10-13 fortant he died at 38 i was 13... short story mum was on her death bed and she said i need to tell you a secret... your dad was right he is not your dad my dad is and than she died...
weak men are like that. (some women too) But men who take their bad day out on women and children is open hunting season if you ask me. Greetings from Norway.

This song was a voice to so many of us that felt so alone and silenced.
Tears every time I hear this song
Such a strong tune🔥 Long live Susanne❤
To all of us Gen X'ers who grew up in an abusive home, this song was our anthem.
Thanks for your sensitive reaction.

I cry every time I hear this song. I can't understand how people can beat up little kids. They only hit until you cry...
To all those people who say now "I would help, I would help"... where were you then? From a dead body who brearhs and eats, nothing else.
Im a metal head and a bit oldschool... but we need to face it a cry if we have to

Great reaction to a sad epic song.
Greetings from Scotland. Totally spot on. You are so perceptive.
It takes a big, bold heart to write a song about the sin of child abuse.
Such a heartbreaking song - deceptively simple and devastating.

Thank you for profiling this - it was hard then and it's hard now but you are bringing this where it needs to be
So much happens that we don't see..Great reaction ❤️

This song is so beautiful and sad. It is about the abuse of children.

The world needs more men like u Skeez, there’s a lot of abuse behind closed doors and it’s sad cuz not everyone survives it
she did this in spanish too its on youtube...
I agree with you. I could not sit still for that. I hate bullies, and especially wife and child beaters. They're all cowards inside anyway.

Well done young man.
Wow I don’t know anyone who has reacted to this. It was very popular when I was young. I had a friend in this situation as a foster kid.
Great heartfelt reaction!
This song is heartbreaking 😢
My ex husband used to hit me , he gave me my first black eye. That shit sucks the life out of you
I'm so glad he's your EX.
Well said

It's a good thing you wouldn't stand by that, many wouldn't do anything, telling themselves it's not their business
