I go to Newport quite often. I’m usually in the bay crabbing but I’d love to figure out how to catch bass and ling cod. I’d love to follow you out sometime.
Hello Earl! I don't have a particular spot or spots that I fish all the time. There is miles of reef running both north and south out in front of Newport. What I do is, I run out to the jetty tips and check out the conditions. Depending on the wind and swell I decide to go north or south. Then, I start looking for fish and structure. When I find a spot that looks promising, I start fishing. If I don't get bit, I'll move. But, if I've caught fish in that spot before, I won't give up on it real quick, I'll keep working it and a lot of times that method pays off. The best advice I can give you is to invest in the best GPS/Fishfinder that you can afford and spend time learning how to use it... Good luck and keep me posted on how you're doing...
Good Stuff! I sub'd! Gonna be up there mid July kayak fishing in the bay, hope to have some good luck! any recommendations for baits, and rigging to get into lings?? Thanks!
You won't find keeper sized lings east of the bridge. If the current permits, focus on the fingers west of the bridge and cast swim baits or mooch herring...
Typically, a drift starts near the top of the reef and finishes up in deeper water. Where I fish, that can be 10 to 14 fathoms. I don't try to maintain a stationary position...
Thank you. I went out for my first time ever yesterday. Wasn't exactly sure where to go. Went as far as the lighthouse. Over shot a bit I guess. Did catch my first ling over there. Next time I won't go as far. If you see a small 14' Alumacraft that would be me. You will only see me on really calm days in that boat. Good luck and thanks for the videos. This is pretty much how I am learning to fish out there.
Thank you for your great videos! I went out of Newport last weekend and got 6 lingcod and 7 rockfish
Congrats Logan! Way to go!
Thanks for sharing this great day of fishing. I'd be happy with a day's catch like that anyday.

How far off shore do you usually fish or look for structure? Do you stay about even with the jetty tips or further out?
Awesome video!
What size boat you in? I had a couple fellas tell me If I can run my 14' tri hull around the Jetty I would be ok in the ocean.

Good luck! Be careful and wear your PFD at all times. Have handheld VHF radio and know how to use it and give your position...
