For more than 100 years, a deeply haunting tale has been passed down to terrify audiences. Next January, DreamWorks Pictures’ The Turning takes us to a mysterious estate in the Maine countryside, where newly appointed nanny Kate is charged with the care of two disturbed orphans, Flora and Miles. Quickly though, she discovers that both the children and the house are harboring dark secrets and things may not be as they appear.
Inspired by Henry James’ landmark novel, the haunted-house thriller is directed by spellbinding visualist Floria Sigismondi (The Runaways, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale) and stars Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate, The Martian), Finn Wolfhard (It, Netflix’s Stranger Things), newcomer Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project) and Joely Richardson (Red Sparrow, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

I waited so long for this movie. I hated the film and thought it could have been way better but I need to just say, the trailer music is by far the most haunting thing I’ve ever heard. I literally rewatch the trailer for that purpose.

The Innocents and The Turning is based off of Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw while The Haunting of Bly Manor is based off of several of James’ stories including The Turn of the Screw of course along with The Jolly Corner and The Romance of Certain Old Clothes which are also titles of two episodes. All three are very different adaptations, but none of them are remakes of each other.

i actually loved the direction in this film, what i thought it DID SUCK was that awful screenplay. the director of this film (Floria Sigismondi) wanted to make a dread/suspensful psychological horror but the writers (who are the same writers of The Conjuring) wanted to write a cliche jumpscare movie. so guess what happens when you try to blend an artistic and interesting vision with a formulaic jumpscare script? that's right, a big mess with wasted potential.
if universal would have let Floria write herself the movie i know it wouldn't have been that bad

i just finished the movie:
- every scene that needed some animation is spoilered in the trailer. literally :D (its more a summary without the plottwist at the end)
- speaking of the plottwist, it was so obvious its hard to even call it one. has been done before, have seen it before.
- the child actors are really good. especially the girl and the (german) synchro is pretty good too. could have been alot better if the story and protagonist werent watered milk.
- the woman is your average blonde (more fitting for stereotypical generic romance movies)
- the setting and environment in the movie start pretty good but flop more and more to the end since she reacts unrealistically and the "creepy scenes" are so 100 % predictable. they dont even try.
- open end that doesnt answer any questions but hints at the forced "plottwist"
- the usual "mh its super dark, lets just walk in there without trying to turn on the lights" and " mh i have seen couple ghosts and dead things, creepy as fuck children who know things they cant possibly know etc., but its fine, i wont ask any questions to anyone or decide to GTFO this place. instead i will play hide and seek in the darkness with a flashlight because they asked me nicely" scenes just ruin any potential. why cant there be a single horror movie that tries to have a causal /logical storyline /decision making ?
The haunting of hill house is way better and I agree with you the haunting of hill house is mainly the only horror I like that’s not boring

This trailer is really not scary or intimidating at all. It's actually pretty hilarious how silly it is.
It's really not that scary. Finn is, though. I think it's the first time his dark side had taken over in a part. And it's a beautiful transformation and fascinating to watch so, don't be scared just see it.

I'm surely in the minority here, but I found it to be a pretty good horror movie, as it actually kept me on the edge of my seat through the whole film.. it was very well shot and superbly acted, the ending was maybe weird but overall it worked for me.. 7,5/10

Yeah, certain movie tropes are overused, but I'm not that jaded, yet, so I disagree. You might just as well demand that they retire the creepy music and dark and stormy nights too... Besides, there are new kids watching a haunted house movie for the first time, such cliches might be new and scary to them.

Creating new foley is not that hard. We have countless films that the future generations will watch so they would probably complain as well.
