Like traffic rules, logbook rules will not keep you safe or help you to adequately manage fatigue.
Drivers must plan their trips; this is the key strategy for managing sleep.
Commercial drivers suffer from sleep apnea at a much higher rate than the general population.
If you display any symptoms, see your doctor.
As well, sleep cannot be banked; yet, drivers and other shift workers can accumulate sleep debt.
The only way to repay sleep debt is by sleeping.
Finally, employ the tips and techniques in this video to adequately manage your fatigue.
Good luck on your road test!

absolutely....i do 3500-4000 miles a week...drink water, eat snacks like Trail Mix and nuts...even soup in winter on the small breaks...power naps and exercise on short breaks....master these and you will be ok.
Apologies for the late response. Those are great tips. How's the driving going my friend? Cheers Rick
I take a nap for a timed 35 minutes. I wake up at the alarm sound and continues driving at the 39 minute mark since I started my nap.
I usually listen to my comedy shows on RUclips or on SiriusXM radio, that helps me a ton just laughing my butt off 😂😂😂
That helps for sure my friend. Do you do a lot of night driving with your company? Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest Yes, I’ve been driving for 10 years and 9 years of it driving nights (currently).
That's awesome my friend. Keep the rubber side down. All the very best, Cheers Rick
I stay awake eating snacks I don’t like. Disgust is a powerful thing did 22 hours no sleep easy :)
That can work my friend. I knew a driver that drank 1/2 cold coffee mixed with coca-cola. I thought that was disgusting, but he said it worked for him. All the best, Cheers Rick
Thank you for posting. All your videos are very informative.
Hey Daniel: Thank you for the compliment. Your words mean a lot and provide great incentive. Cheers Rick
Each and everything you said is very critically analysed and definitely out of your practical experiences and observations. I have had these conditions on some occasions. Your job is superb.
Thank you my friend. Drop us a note if we can help further. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Matt Jones - Thank you for your comment. You are correct my friend - micro sleeps are scary and dangerous. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test what get me is change from normal roster. I usually start around 5am and work until 3pm. Sometimes the PM roaster is short and I need to cover so I start at 5pm and work 12pm. My normal routine is in bed by 8pm so driving after 10pm is hard for me. It also when I likely have trouble on the bus from the drunks and ice addicts so I need to be on the ball
Hi Matt Jones - Thank you for your reply. Yes, anyone that gets into a routine is going to have difficulty when it changes. If I had to drive past 10pm now, it would be really tough. Last year I was coming back from Vancouver Island and I hit the wall at midnight. It cost $200 for the hotel room, but I made it home in one piece. All the best, Cheers Rick
I would like to ask one question when you drive on the road as a truck driver can you take a hour or two in your sleeper to stay awake for the 11 hour drive window
Hi Darryl - apologies for the late response, and for your comment and query. I'm assuming you're driving in the United States? You must take a minimum 30 minute break at or before the 8-hour mark of coming on duty. And yes, you can take more time than that, but you must make sure that you don't come up against the 14-hour window. Your work day must occur within a 14-hour window. So long as that happens you are golden. Have a look at this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PL0x-bChcUvwHn0F2AvCbPHt7qAn77guK8 If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I chew gum to combat fatigue
That works too my friend. Do you drive a lot at night? All the best, Cheers Rick
Buy RUclips red and download some really scary stories! Some of them are disturbing majorly disturbing...lol!
Hi Ladonna - You're correct - driving can be dangerous; but I don't like to frighten people. I work to provide them with the best possible information and then hope that they make good decisions. It's probably the optimist in me. Thanks Cheers Rick
