    I went with a 512 storage, 16 ram, 15" Air over the 14" Pro due to a few reasons. For me the thinner, lighter body with the larger screen is worth the reduced performance and limited ports. The M2 is plenty fast for what I use it for (Excel, R Studio, Xcode, VMware + standard computer stuff) and I rarely use ports anyways.

    Great video - per usual!! I absolutely love your channel man! I bought the 15” with 16GB RAM and the 512GB SSD in Space Gray. I consider myself very difficult to please, and a very demanding “Pro User.” After using a 16” M1 Pro MacBook Pro (16GB, 512GB) as my daily driver… This 15” M2 Air is the perfect Mac for me.
    It’s so satisfying to reach over with one hand… snatch it up off the couch or my bed… and throw it in my lap. I couldn’t do this as easily with the 16” Pro, and the difference always puts a smile on my face.
    The thin and light build of the Air is what I like most about it.
    Yes, the 16” M1 Pro has a more powerful chip on paper, and it has fans, but the M2 Air with the 16/512 feels just as powerful in person. I have not run into any “Beach balls,” it’s lightning fast, the 15.3” screen is excellent, and I like it so much that I sold my 16” M1 Pro because I don’t need it for anything anymore.
    If anyone is torn between a new 15” M2 Air with 16/512 ($1,699), or a refurbished 14” or 16” M1 Pro or M2 Pro… Here’s my recommendation:
    #1 - 15” M2 Air
    #2 - 16” M1 Pro MacBook Pro
    #3 - 14” M1 Pro MacBook Pro
    - It’s super thin and light
    - I like it more than the heavier Pro’s (Especially the tiny, but fat 14)
    - Don’t be worried about an upgraded M2 (16/512) being slow… because it’s NOT! It’s insanely powerful
    - The 15” M2 Air’s screen is excellent
    - The speakers are excellent
    - The keyboard on the Air is better than the black one on the Pro
    A $1,699 15” M2 Air with 16/512 is the perfect laptop for 99% of the “power users” on the planet in 2023/2024. I couldn’t imagine a better computer for my needs and I highly recommend it!
    You can buy it right now on the Apple Refurbished store for $1,439.
    Do it! Do it! 🙋‍♂️

    Nice review. I had a similar reaction when I looked at/touched it. Switching from my 13" Air to the 15" was a real struggle. I went back and forth for days before finally making the purchase and I love it. Battery life is better - I am not a power user so I can get almost three days of use. The screen (like that of the 13") is beautiful and, of course, larger. The extra real estate on the body makes for better typing. It handles Photoshop, Lightroom, and Sketchup smoothly and quickly. AND it does not have a fan. I would highly recommend the 15" MacBook Air. I also suggest running Sonoma on it.

    Appreciate your confirmation of what I found after 6 weeks with an M2 MBA 13” ($900 in January) and 2 weeks with an M2 MBA 15” ($1000 in early February). Yes it’s a slab compared with the “just grab me” 13”, but …
    … where I really found that big screen such a boon was when I Airplayed (actually Sidecar) to it from my M2 Pro Mini on a 35” ultrawide (3440x1440) monitor. When I moved over an Excel worksheet to the 13” it was like looking through a submarine porthole. Even at the highest res the 13” could muster. The 15” is more comparable to the LG 35” monitor, and when I bring a worksheet over, with slightly lower res than Sidecar’s recommended “default” the size is nearly 1:1. I’ve found my new ultralite take-anywhere laptop.
    It’s a little Laurel & Hardy when I put my iPad Mini next to it, but still … they’re both super easy to pick up and work on.

    I disagree somewhat about moving to a MacBook Pro 14 if you’re upgrading the MacBook Air 15’s memory and storage just because you’re moving into that price range. The Air 15’s resolution is higher than the Pro 14 at their highest native resolutions (which by the way is lower than the advertised max resolution for both of them; you need a 3rd party tool is get the highest advertised resolutions). And that higher resolution is easier for viewing text on the Air 15 because of the larger screen. If screen *size* (and text viewing) is top of your priorities, the 15 air (even after costly memory/storage upgrade) is a better choice than the Pro 14 even given the nicer HDR, ProMotion, and brightness stats on the Pro 14. I’ve not upgraded from my Air M1 (that I’ve loved) yet, but I’m leaning toward the 15 air. That screen real estate along with a light (very balanced) form factor is extremely hard to beat.

      It depends on what you will use your MacBook for. I compared both the Air and the Pro, and I opted for the Pro (I‘m a photographer). You definitely see a huge difference in image quality, which I need for my work. For students or others working with a lot of text, I agree that the Air is the way to go.

    • @Xandirishe
      @Xandirishe Год назад +1

      It is totally opposite : MBA15 has a native resolution of screen 2880-by-1864 vs MBP14 has a 3024-by-1964. Anyway, you dont't wanna use them on their native resolution without scaling because it makes everything small and unusable.

    • @makethistechwork2881
      @makethistechwork2881 Год назад

      @@Xandirishe Yes, I should have said scaled resolution, which *is* higher on the Air 15 (at the highest setting). I’ve tested them side by side. The Pro 14in M2 has higher resolution overall but you can’t get to that in MacOS display settings. On my Air M1 13in I’ve used a tool to get to the higher resolutions. It’s definitely helpful sometimes but yes text can get too tiny. The tool allows for 2 resolutions higher than the highest scaled resolution in the Mac’s settings. I find the 2nd highest useful. The highest (which is what Apple advertises but you can’t get to in Apple’s display settings) results in text just too tiny for my eyes.

    But hold on, Daddy, that's gonna drop you right back to that unacceptable 8GB RAM and 256 GB SSD. I'm assuming that the pro-ness of the machine doesn't do anything to make that configuration less absurd. (MORE absurd, if anything!) So then you're going to have to consider the upgrade all over again, and I suppose the same tech reviewer is going to say "If you're going to increase the price that much, you might as well buy the ." See where I'm going with this?
    I don't know why, but it seems that the vast majority of tech reviewers are discouraging any upgrades. This makes no sense to me.
    I say, buy the machine you think you need (and can afford, obviously) based on the processors. Then upgrade as much as is reasonable given your budget and requirements. No more of this "don't bother upgrading" stuff the reviewers are telling you!
    Love your videos. Love your style. Almost always agree with your recommendations, except for that nonsense "don't upgrade" advice.

    The best MacBook is actually the one you already own and are presently using even if it is an older model. My first and only MacBook to date is a base model M1 MacBook Air which I just purchased this year. I chose this over the M2 model due to mainly to the substantial price difference. I intend to use and keep it and have no plans of upgrading as long as it is in working order and Apple continues to provide software support.

    I have a 2015 macbook air with a pretty sad dual core i5. Since Apple no longer supports this, I just put Windows 10 on it to use it for web browsing and a security camera server. It actually feels pretty 'snappy'. I will say will be our last Mac computer since Apple claims to be a 'green' company but discontinues support after 5-7 years to force consumers to buy the latest and greatest. I am aware there are 'workarounds' to put the latest Mac OS on it and from what I've seen, older Intel based Macs run JUST FINE with it. There is no other reason for Apple not supporting this hardware, other than greed.

    Basically, the only redeeming quality of 15" M2 Air is form factor. Pricing with slow SSD & 8 GB of RAM is atrocity. Though it would have been better with old wedge shape....4:4 - that's whole point; there's NO cooling system. No vacuum chambers, no graphene radiators to move heat laterally (however small) to screen back chassis. We'll see how 15" M3 is screwed.

    • @housepianist
      @housepianist Год назад +3

      Slightly trembles? Unless you brutally pound the keys as you type, a “slight tremble” is not an indicator of the degree of rigidity. Every computer chassis is going to have SOME flexibility. But when compared to most other PCs on the market, the 15” MacBook Air is about as rigid as anything out there. Any slight “trembling” is moot and insignificant.
      You also have to consider the actual structure (square, rectangle, etc), material quality (anodized, annealed, etc) and its construction (sandwiched, spot structured, beamed, etc) to determine the level of flexibility - or lack thereof. For all intensive purposes, MacBook chassis are rigid, even if you pound them with your fist! Don’t confuse the above structural references with abuse. 😂
