  • 'The Iceman' Wim Hof is a master of breath to unlock heightened states of consciousness and untapped reservoirs of human potential.
    In this companion piece to the podcast, Wim instructs Rich through a breathing exercise.
    Disclaimer: Never practice any of the breathing exercises described in this video without proper supervision. Avoid doing them before/during any activities where a loss of consciousness may prove life threatening. The breathing methods discussed may have a profound effect and should be practiced exactly as explained and always in a safe and supervised environment.
    Enjoy!

    Jesus Christ I'm a little shook from the warning at the beginning. I learned about this over a year ago and did the breathing and yes I was able to increase my max of any exercise by about 1/3 but I had never done the cold exposure part. I just did it for the first time today I went into a hot tub and pushed myself from one side to the other using my arms and legs never touching the ground or resting, I did that to failure, then did the breathing, almost did pass out tbh I had to stop holding my breathe way before 15 seconds. I'm glad I know what passing out feels like, and then jumped in the pool. Idk, I can't see myself not doing it again. It was incredible, I felt so awake. I swam faster, longer, nothing unnecessary was there. Just me in the moment feel my body. This was mind blowing with the cold exposure. I can't wait for this winter.

    I have been diagnosed with PTSD. Was attacked by a person with a knife during a robbery. So, the chemical unbalance that can originate from a situation like that is well documented. The Wim Hof Method has been helping me but I feel that I will need months to get to a truly healthy standing. Meditation, positive thinking, cold showers, WHM and HRT. It is an all inclusive approach and I can't wait for the day I will be able to tap into my autonomic nervous system. Thank you for the video.

    Thanks Rich for the little video & the great podcast (ALL the great podcasts!!) Wim Hoff method will be a prep for my exercise in the pool. I am overcoming a weed addiction & the main reason is that it has been damaging my lungs (& my teeth), of which i have been aware for a long time. But your podcasts & your journey have been helping me to stay focussed on exercising more, now i can run & swim & i never have before (i've always cycled though). I have already been plant based & practicing yoga daily for 20 years, but the desire to remove cannabis from my life has been hard to manifest. Like alcohol, its a cultural thing & i'm surrounded by this culture. Turning 40 last year & seeing your growth from 40 towards 50 has empowered me to make some important shifts. Hopefully I will be competing in more Triathlons as i progress, i already did a mini-tri earlier this year & enjoyed it! Something I never thought i would do. I would love if you could find a way to talk about this addiction in a future podcast, because i find it is rarely focussed on in the realm of addictions, & usually only in the context of folks who have suffered weed-induced-psychosis, which i have avoided by staying 'outdoor & organic'. Back on breathing, I have found that unlike you, who has a base of swimming in your physique, I have cycling, so strong legs but lean AF upper body & i've found that breathing for cardio output is something i need to re-learn. Again i would love if you could somehow focus on not 'getting fit' (I am fit) but instead improving lung capacity. Getting swimming lessons & not being able to do more than 2 laps without being 'puffed' has shown me that i'm NOT lung fit... Which is frustrating. Permaculture is my main life passion & i would also adore you even more if you could find a way to podcast something on this awesome movement for change in agriculture, people care & equity. Zach Bush & David Bronner have been enlivening podcasts for me & also I know there are some vegan Permies out there. Big Love from ADL, AUST.

    I always see people lying down on their backs to do this. I usually sit in a chair or in the lotus position. I get more O2 that way. When people are on ventilators in ICU they are rolled over on their belly's and off of their backs to allow for more O2 to get into their lungs. But that's just me. And FYI... I suffer from chronic allergies and asthma and I've been doing this for a couple of weeks and have been on an anti-inflammatory diet for 6 weeks and my smell has come back. It's awesome.

      I do 30 reps before initial breath retention 3 sets of this (generally) this is the way it is most commonly prescribed. Though I've learnt to feel it and will often do 35/40 reps and 3/4 sets. That usually enough. =)

    • @rameshemv
      @rameshemv 5 лет назад +20

      1) Wim hof very clearly (and unambiguously and repeatedly) recommends to do this on empty stomach (so it means morning for most of the folks..or any time of the day if you are fasting)....
      2) ONE set is of 30-40 reps (or whatever count gets you the tingling and lightheadedness)
      3) 3 such sets at a time (or maybe more if you like) are recommended.
      4) follow this by some stretching.... push presses...and some form of meditation (don't get hyped about A type of meditation...all forms of them are good).
      5) take the cold shower after this routine if you can...or whenever possible.
      The more i do this breathing technique.. the more i see how ancient Indian breathing techniques try to achieve the same...in fact Sri Sri's Sudarshan kriya (daily version - short kriya) has the same effect on me.
      Glad that through wim hof, therapeutic and powerful breathing techniques are being popularised. Health to everyone!

    • @band1tt

      @Gareth Davies after 3 sets I hit the shower, turn on the shower halfway of what I used to do, then after I get comfortable start to breath and turn the knob to icecold in a gentle turn. Then I stand in the ice cold and feel stumbled that it feels ok, stay there for a couple of minutes, turn of and enjoy the feeling :-)

    • @lukassteiner_one
      @lukassteiner_one 5 лет назад +1

      You do the exercises to prepare your body for the cold water exposure. But you should not do the exercises right before going into the water as you might black out from the immediate effect of the exercise.
      Just wait for maybe 10 minutes before going into the water. Or do the exercises in the evening and the cold shower in the morning.

    • @sashabenariel1
      @sashabenariel1 5 лет назад

      You're specifically not supposed to do the retention breath in the water, because youre not breathing during that time, and there is a possibility of passing out. You can do the breathing and retention before you go in, just make sure you are not holding breath in the cold water. I have been doing it for three months, and that's been completely safe for me.

      Well he does expose himself to some pretty extreme conditions on a regular basis. But maybe he just needs a good moisturizer.

      He's rugged .👍
      But really it's is so shallow to consider his appearance when he has contributed a so much to science.
      God bless Ice Man
      Imagine if we all could turn oor grief into a gift like he did.
      No words can thank him enough.❤️😘.
