Odd Place to Launch a Boat...

  • The lake level is high, but the creek isn't nearly high enough. I'm launching my home built baby skiff in a tiny stream to access a new bay in Land Between the Lakes. My approach to boating is a little unorthodox at times.

There is nothing quite as good as a small flat bottomed boat like yours for exploring quiet waterways. They are simple and easy to build and so practical. No need for motors. A good pair of oars will take you the distance. That is some beautiful country.

I live in a dry desert where a drop of water is life saving to many animals. Your videos and music take me away from the heat and sand to a beautiful refreshing green space. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the long takes (no 5,000 3-second scenes edited together like so many do) and the lack of musical accompaniment is appreciated

Quite a wonderful episode! I wonder if you're familiar with William Bartram, who explored the lands in the American south, in the late 1700's. Described as "the first naturalist who penetrated the dense tropical forests of Florida". His book, "Travels of William Bartram" is a must! Cheers, and keep them coming...

I just ordered the book. Looks good! Reading "A pirate of exquisite mind" about William Dampier. So many accounts of pirates and privateers. What a job!

I have 3 boats, a 14 foot ballasted long keel boat for sailing on the sea, a 12 foot dinghy with a gunter rig and a little 10 foot plastic Tabur 320 with its sprit rig. This third boat has an unstayed mast making it possible to take everything down in a few seconds to row under a low bridge or trees. It is less elegant than your skiff, but does about the same job on rivers where the alternative is my inflatable kayak. Continue your life as a free soul in union with nature!

Stunning my friend two questions if I may.
First I watch a channel out of Tenn and if would seem like all shote line with any vegetation on it it is crawling with cottonmouth snakes is that accurate.
Second what kind of bottom covering dies the different have to help protect against rock gouging through to bare wood.

Yes, during summer, snakes are prevalent. Water moccasin, cotton mouth, timber rattler, and copperhead are the 4 venomous snakes in Kentucky. I'm always aware of the ground when out in the thick stuff. Once saw a timber rattler swimming up the creek with a big sunfish in its mouth!
Nothing special to protect the bottom. Plywood is pretty tough, and can be replaced fairly easily if need be. I do have to repaint the bottom pretty regularly.

Will you be making the boat and sail plans available? Love the design

Thank you. If everything works out, I hope to release plans before summer ends. Your channel is amazing. The lyre is such a beautiful instrument. Excellent playing too.

Great looking little boat. What do ya think the weight limit is on that boat?

I've experimented with this a little. It can carry two adults on flat water (me and my girlfriend), but it would need a second rowing station near the bow to make that practical. It's easy to get trimmed funky if you have too much weight on one end. For example, with her sitting on the stern seat and me on the center seat rowing, the bow rides out of the water, looking like the skiff is popping a wheelie.
