Almost three years later and I'm still just as utterly enchanted as the first time I heard Courtney's anguished cries of "IT'S THE EFFECT OF THE MARA".
@@andys3035 not much out there for clarity, but Courtney once spoke on a podcast about it being inspired by a friend who suffered from sleep paralysis, which the band tied in with lore about an entity/deity known as Mara who can bring on nightmares.
I like to believe one of the many ideas on why this song generates so much terror is because that polyrhythm groove at the beginning feels like something is chasing you. Especially with the snare and kick, with the snare slowly encroaching on the downbeat. just keeps you in motion, keeps you tense.
This song has that "mood". I can't explain this particular mood entirely, heavy and driving but weightless, drifting and lost all in one. This is simply the best band I have ever heard yet.
The ending sequence of this video is like going into a mental loop before a psychosis, or a K-hole. It brings up some legitimate existential terror with such simple imagery and execution. So damn incredible.
This song is straight up BEAUTIFUL, but the idea of how it was shot on an iPhone with just 10 gallons of milk just BLOWS MY MIND!! The way your music makes me feel is... the way The Contortionists music makes me feel. Goosebumps everywhere my friends.
God 3 years later and this song still makes my heart race with its beautiful chorus and that absolute intense outro, I’m so happy that this band is getting the recognition they’re getting. Definitely going to be the top band of this generation 🤘🏻
I just found this band and I cant stop listening. The beauty and pain, the kindness and rage, the love and disappointment, I feel it all and its almost like someone is speaking my thoughts. I am almost sad that I love it so much because that means she must feel the same beauty and pain about life, but I am thankful for having heard her words and the bands music. Has hints of Rush and Coheed and Cambria...and this one time I went into the woods and iwrestledabearonce...with a Boat Paddle. #Spiritbox @Spiritbox....what ever # and @ mean...................
@@TakeMeBackToTheLightningBugs SAME! I just take my own interpretation from the words and how they relate and resonate with me. I would be very interested what the meaning of her words are to her...your guess is as good as mine.

Every part of The Mara Effect along with 10:16 is perfect. I love to listen to them in order over and over again. Wish these songs got more recognition 'cause they're pretty damn good.
Lmao now look at them. Getting featured in every major metal magazine and website. Mainstream youtubers are reacting to them. This is like what you want for that small band that you liked when they first came out and this time it actually happened.
One of the best songs ever from Spiritbox. Everything in this song it's so we'll put together. Such a masterpiece. Obsessed whit this song for ever. 🖤✨
Whoever produced and directed this deserves an award. It seems they only used *maybe* 1 or 2 rooms, did imagery outside, then did the effects with lighting and the video recorder. Yet, it still created the atmosphere of terror, fear, and being trapped substantially. Every time I watch the ending, it gives me chills. Very nicely done 👌🏾
🔥🔥 Show of hands who used to listen to lWABO and found this band. // I first listened to IWABO when I was in 6th grade. // Last couple of years had me busy with life and I forgot about IWABO but came across Spiritbox in the end of 2020. 🔥🔥
This is pure perfection. 3:20 ... oh my god. Giving me chills everywhere. Just like every other song by Spiritbox. Courtney, your voice is so beautiful in any way. I love your clean vocals as much as I love your screams and growls because you, as a band, are able to find the perfect mix and compose your music perfectly fitting Courtney's voice. You are amazing. I really appreciate your work and I'm looking forward to more incredible good music from you in the future ♥
doesnt get any better than Spiritbox, they have slayn the genre w/ every track they put out which is pure perfection calming their status as a band, peacocking displaying their pure, powerful, unique musicianship. floored every time i jam 2them. w/out Courtney's talent they'd be like everyone else in the scene, average djent metalcore
So much to say.. i came from iwrestledabearonce and now I’m hooked on these guys! Wow. And I believe that is IWABO’s drummer? I know the singer Courtney of course! What a Mix. Sounds a little like evanescence vocals and tesseract?? I’m am intrigued 👀
Courtney's voice is gold, both cleans and screams, and with Spiritbox we can hear a more Post-Hardcore/Metalcore approach that fits more mi likes. Thanks for songs like this.
I've had this song and electric cross stuck in my head for 48 hours now. I read that IWABO was from Shreveport, not sure where Spiritbox is based out of, but the lyrical weight of these songs are crippling. I'm born/raised from the south coast, Texas gulf, and I've never heard anyone ever say the things she's singing about here. Things that everyone knows about, that you aren't allowed to put your finger on. Things so bad that strangers who recognize what's going on will go dead silent and quietly leave and never speak of. Just wanted to throw it out there that the words hit their mark. Hard. This shit kills me and I can't stop playing it. Nothing has hit this hard lyrically since Deftones 'Battle Axe' when I was 17. Love from Houston.
I've never had a band make songs that were in my head all day for days at a time, only to switch to another one of their songs, repeat. I listened to this one maybe 25 times today?
This song as well as the complete 3part series The Mara Effect is absolutely FUC#### GENIUS!!!....Thankyou SPX 4 showing all of us how IT is done ....Respect....
Easy to say when you are a fan of it..but I think (and this is going to sound bad) for most mainstream minded people..mindless music without thought is confused for good music...what we have here in Spiritbox is so god damn brilliant but around where I live...not many people like metal to begin with.
In 3 months SpiritBox have gone from a new discovery to enjoy and appreciate, to an inspiring part of my life both literally and musically. Better late than never, these melodies, vocal patterns, guitar grooves. These are talented and emotionally charged musicians. I connect with that, thanks for reigniting my musical passion and being the catalyst for the end of my 3 year writers block! Lifelong fan now!
MY! SKIN! CRAWLS! I fucking love this band! Thank you for being so awesome. Like everyone here I am pleased to say I finally have a new favorite band of all time! Doesn't happen often, but it's the best feeling when an artist just clicks with you right off the rip and you spend the next month only listening to them.
I won't lie, this is probably my new favourite song. Undoubtedly my favourite band for this last year but never knew just how great it was. You can really feel the work that was put in to these tracks and it is absolutely upsetting that I won't ever reach this level of greatness. I am in complete awe by the talent y'all have. P.S. How don't even understand how Mike makes his low tunings so melodic and great.
this makes me proud to have been apart of the hardcore/metal scene from 07-14... There is something about her ambiance and vocal patterns that gives me nostalgia of the 90s especially the video games. I could play the whole legacy of kain series whilst listening to this... I saw IWABO back in the day and loved it but i didn't love it enough to the point where i listen to 5 or 6 of their songs daily, like i do with Spiritbox...
Your EP is deeply emotional, I can listen in a loop, and loop, never get tired. Courntey, your voice is superb, and the musicians bring you an excellent atmosphere and an undeniable talent.

Agreed.
For realll, so Beautiful
PT 1 and 3 are the Best IMO 2 was alright but not nearly as good as p1/3
"by far" and "one of the" can not be used together.
Well duh
It makes me really sad to think I could have been listening to this for 3 years but I jus found Spiritbox like last month...
Man I found them TODAY
Me too Joshua! There’s something so perfect about them. I feel like I found a pound of gold.
Jus found them today also thanks to Liquid Metal on Sirius/XM

Agreed. Spiritbox is fucking perf
It is very groovy
yess,
I know what you mean by the "mood". Some metal bands know how to create this sound, but not a lot, it feels so good, like melancholic and spacey.
That first chorus into the bass groove is incredible 🔥🔥🔥
the groove right after that is something else.... then she hits that high note over it.... i melt into a puddle every time
