Almost three years later and I'm still just as utterly enchanted as the first time I heard Courtney's anguished cries of "IT'S THE EFFECT OF THE MARA".
@@andys3035 not much out there for clarity, but Courtney once spoke on a podcast about it being inspired by a friend who suffered from sleep paralysis, which the band tied in with lore about an entity/deity known as Mara who can bring on nightmares.
I like to believe one of the many ideas on why this song generates so much terror is because that polyrhythm groove at the beginning feels like something is chasing you. Especially with the snare and kick, with the snare slowly encroaching on the downbeat. just keeps you in motion, keeps you tense.
Easy to say when you are a fan of it..but I think (and this is going to sound bad) for most mainstream minded people..mindless music without thought is confused for good music...what we have here in Spiritbox is so god damn brilliant but around where I live...not many people like metal to begin with.
This song has that "mood". I can't explain this particular mood entirely, heavy and driving but weightless, drifting and lost all in one. This is simply the best band I have ever heard yet.
God 3 years later and this song still makes my heart race with its beautiful chorus and that absolute intense outro, I’m so happy that this band is getting the recognition they’re getting. Definitely going to be the top band of this generation 🤘🏻
This song is straight up BEAUTIFUL, but the idea of how it was shot on an iPhone with just 10 gallons of milk just BLOWS MY MIND!! The way your music makes me feel is... the way The Contortionists music makes me feel. Goosebumps everywhere my friends.
The ending sequence of this video is like going into a mental loop before a psychosis, or a K-hole. It brings up some legitimate existential terror with such simple imagery and execution. So damn incredible.
Lmao now look at them. Getting featured in every major metal magazine and website. Mainstream youtubers are reacting to them. This is like what you want for that small band that you liked when they first came out and this time it actually happened.
Every part of The Mara Effect along with 10:16 is perfect. I love to listen to them in order over and over again. Wish these songs got more recognition 'cause they're pretty damn good.
Whoever produced and directed this deserves an award. It seems they only used *maybe* 1 or 2 rooms, did imagery outside, then did the effects with lighting and the video recorder. Yet, it still created the atmosphere of terror, fear, and being trapped substantially. Every time I watch the ending, it gives me chills. Very nicely done 👌🏾
I just found this band and I cant stop listening. The beauty and pain, the kindness and rage, the love and disappointment, I feel it all and its almost like someone is speaking my thoughts. I am almost sad that I love it so much because that means she must feel the same beauty and pain about life, but I am thankful for having heard her words and the bands music. This is pure perfection. 3:20 ... oh my god. Giving me chills everywhere. Just like every other song by Spiritbox. Courtney, your voice is so beautiful in any way. I love your clean vocals as much as I love your screams and growls because you, as a band, are able to find the perfect mix and compose your music perfectly fitting Courtney's voice. You are amazing. I really appreciate your work and I'm looking forward to more incredible good music from you in the future ♥
One of the best songs ever from Spiritbox. Everything in this song it's so we'll put together. Such a masterpiece. Obsessed whit this song for ever. 🖤✨
I think its because we never heard her cleans. She has been screaming since: unicron, I.w.a.b.o making two album. Truly a fan, though I like her old stuff.
I won't lie, this is probably my new favourite song. Undoubtedly my favourite band for this last year but never knew just how great it was. I've had this song and electric cross stuck in my head for 48 hours now. I read that IWABO was from Shreveport, not sure where Spiritbox is based out of, but the lyrical weight of these songs are crippling. I'm born/raised from the south coast, Texas gulf, and I've never heard anyone ever say the things she's singing about here. Things that everyone knows about, that you aren't allowed to put your finger on. Things so bad that strangers who recognize what's going on will go dead silent and quietly leave and never speak of. Just wanted to throw it out there that the words hit their mark. Hard. This shit kills me and I can't stop playing it. Nothing has hit this hard lyrically since Deftones 'Battle Axe' when I was 17. Love from Houston.
doesnt get any better than Spiritbox, they have slayn the genre w/ every track they put out which is pure perfection calming their status as a band, peacocking displaying their pure, powerful, unique musicianship. floored every time i jam 2them. w/out Courtney's talent they'd be like everyone else in the scene, average djent metalcore
