La Boheme is a 70-year-old composition by Aznavour and is typically French. Angelina's genius is to sing the English version while maintaining the French atmosphere.
Wonderful comment, but 70 years old is a bit too much. Written and launched in 1965! But Angelina singing hits that old and indeed some older than 70 years old (Billie Holiday) is fantastic! 🙂
She sings bittersweet melancholy better than any other singer. The French songs La Boheme and If You Go Away are prime examples, but it appears in many of her songs. You can feel it even if you don't have the lyrics.
I am Norwegian. I don't understand all the lyrics in every song. Almost never. But still, her singing is so extremely good to me that I can't help but surrender to her voice. So I like about 91 percent of whatever she does. And I can't say that about any other artists. And I've listened to hundreds, or maybe thousands of different artist in the years. I am still searching for new music every day. But no one can compare to Angelina.

I believe that singing is her purpose in life. I am sure of it. And glad to have found her before she really takes off.
I disagree that any of this is going by sound. Her English at this age is better than mine, born and raised USA.
Listen to the phrase "sobering truth" towards the beginning. She says "sobbering." And there are other phrases I could point out. But not a criticism; this song is wonderfully sung.
@@BigAngieFan808 OHH I know you! This is almost unrelated to voice and singing. I did not hear the sobbering thing, but yeah, she is reading lyrics not phoenetics(by sound). Mispronouncing the written word is true, but common in English speaking people. She seems to be given, maybe, too much "artistic" leeway, considering that this was released in "Magic" uncorrected. Or did it sound better that way?😉
@@michaelpape3793 Hmmm, I'm hearing "subbering truth", but I just figured it was more of a stylistic choice and with the flow of the music arrangement. Still, a very well down performance
@@rw716 English is her third language, she does have a slightly more pronounced accent at this age than she does now. So she’s reading and singing in a language that is not her first, so the pronunciation of some words is going to sound different from how we Americans would say them. In Norway they start learning to speak, read and write English in Elementary School so she wasn’t reading this phonetically.

Cannot thank you enough. This is the first time I've seen the picture of Angelina with her grandmother standing in a corner of the studio.
This has always been one of my favorite Angelina songs. The only version I've heard that can compete with it is the original by Aznavour. I also love the version she did on the couch with her little sister.

Hi, Chris! Thank you for featuring this song. With few exceptions,the majority of songs are about the relationship between individuals, which is understandable as it is something which is important for those involved. La Boheme is one of the exceptions, as it speaks of the past and the singer's regret that that period has gone. It is this, together with Angelina's interpretation, that makes it one which has never strayed from my top five performances by her. I hope that she will include it on her forthcoming album.
Yes Albert, not a song that would make the hit parade, but such a magnificent performance. I have her first album on CD in my car - I often listen to this song, one of the thirty or so songs that are in my top five...

Angelina really connects with this song, I remember her singing this to her sister back in 2015. It is very close to the Charles Aznavour version, but with less vibrato - Angelina just has the trailing vibrato at the end of phrases, managing to express the emotion with her wonderful tones. I can feel the "Frenchness" of the lyrics but in clear English - the words flow so tightly together, no space for her usual phrasing. Her diction I have no problem with (being English myself) it's as good or better than any of her other songs. I get the feeling that Angelina has a deep empathy with the characters described, where art is the passion and poverty the outcome, undeterred by adversity, but melancholy due to the loss of youth and innocence. That such a young person chooses to give us this rendition is the sign of the depth of understanding of life, of the good and the bad that we would usually take a long lifetime to comprehend. She was only 11 years old here - what heights will she achieve in the decades to come?

Absolutely a masterpiece of singing by young Angelina. These very complicated lyrics she is singing in English is mind blowing to say the least. Just a superior talent even at this age. Thank you Chris for another wonderful video with Angelina....this is one of my favorites though very little views or play time unfortunately. Stay Well.

Chris, Rusty did a marvelous job putting this video all together. Something very unusual happened in this video which I have never seen before. At the very end of the song you can see Angelina took a very deep breath. She put so much into the song. Some time ago a couple of Frenchman reacted to this video. In typical French style they were somewhat so so about the English interpretation of the lyrics but they both agreed Angelina was someone special.
Chris, she's so unbelievable she sounds French singing this song in English! This performance by Angelina, stringing all those long lines into a melody is something incredibly beautiful and I don't believe she has ever gotten the overwhelming praise she should have received.
And speaking of praise, when will she ever do a complete version of 'Smile' ? Maybe they are waiting for when the time is right to release it. A studio version with all the trimmings would be something sensational.

I agree. She really sung it as well as Aznavour did in his glory days... and I love this english version although I am a French speaking Belgian. The French uses are often too protective of their language in singing while they still covered many english and US songs from the 50s and 60s in french (Johnny Halliday, Claude Francois are two major examples of it) but they always forget it... 😅
