Years have rolled on since a long ago dearly loved teacher first introduced us to Bryon's poem - and told us his mother was a Gordon - what could be better than listening to The Corries with this magnificent rendition! Many thanks, Linda!
Roy and Ronnie were the first I heard doing the song in this style, way back in the 80s. Its always stuck with me and when Ross and I covered it we did so in the same style... great choice Linda ;o)
Away ye grey landscapes, ye gardens o' roses In you let the minions of luxury rove And restore me the rock where the snowflake reposes If still they are sacred to freedom and love Brave Caledonia, dear are thy mountains Round their white summits though elements war Though cataracts roar 'stead of smooth-flowing fountains I sigh for the valley o' dark Lochnagar ♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡ Ah! there my young footsteps in infancy wandered My cap was the bonnet, my cloak was the plaid On chieftains departed my memory lingered As daily I strayed through the pine-covered glade I sought not my home till the day's dying glory Gave place to the rays o' the bright polar star My fancy was cheered by the bold martial story As told by the sons o' dark Lochnagar ♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡ Years have rolled on, Lochnagar, since I left you Years must roll on ere I see you again Though Nature of verdure and flowers bereft you Yet still art thou dearer than Albion's plain England! thy beauties are tame and domestic To one who has roved on the mountains afar Oh for the crags that are wild and majestic The steep frowning glories o' wild Lochnagar Brave Caledonia, dear are thy mountains I sigh for the valley o' dark Lochnagar ♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡ Ill-starred now the brave, did no vision foreboding Tell you that fate had forsaken our cause? Yet were you destined to die at Culloden Though victory crowned not your fall with applause Yet were you happy in death's earthly slumbers To sleep wi' your clan in the caves of Braemar The pibroch resounds to the piper's loud numbers Your deeds to the echoes of wild Lochnagar ♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡ Brave Caledonia, dear are thy mountains I sigh for the valley o' dark Lochnagar
This is by far the best version of Lochnager, just a pity that the word "grey" is sung in the opening verse instead of "gay" which the Corries do use in their other videos. Gay being the old, poetic word for pretty, nice to look at,as Byron had intended it's use in this verse.
@BillDFC Aye maybe "ower auld" maybe but still alive an kickin! :) and no worry, we is all catchin up rather too quick for me own likin. An now you are now possibly, or soon will be another year aulder older, from when you first wrote this lol....
Recently at a funeral this was played . Incredible send off to a fantastic man and a fantastic tune followed

Last time I walked from the top of Glen Clova in Angus over the mountain to the Aberdeenshire side was in 1968. Could nae dae it now...ower auld!
This song is forever. So fun to sing too!
Ive been in Brighton for 10 year now and upon hearing this I must go home XXx to my ma and dad this ones for you xx god bless you both xx
Love this so much, it was my dad’s favourite
love this song, makes me want to go home.
Love this song!
My granny sung this beautifully
"Dark Lochnagar" is NOT a ballad, but after the first stanza the Corries sing it as if it is.
This is a really stirring rendition, better even than the other version by the Corries that was uploaded earlier.
Roy’s been a dad miss wonderful talent
One O' my favorites Linda!!!

Great
No. Not many Lochnagars in Ireland either.
i agree with ceanadach,
Away ye grey landscapes, ye gardens o' roses
In you let the minions of luxury rove
And restore me the rock where the snowflake reposes
If still they are sacred to freedom and love
Brave Caledonia, dear are thy mountains
Round their white summits though elements war
Though cataracts roar 'stead of smooth-flowing fountains
I sigh for the valley o' dark Lochnagar
♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡
Ah! there my young footsteps in infancy wandered
My cap was the bonnet, my cloak was the plaid
On chieftains departed my memory lingered
As daily I strayed through the pine-covered glade
I sought not my home till the day's dying glory
Gave place to the rays o' the bright polar star
My fancy was cheered by the bold martial story
As told by the sons o' dark Lochnagar
♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡
Years have rolled on, Lochnagar, since I left you
Years must roll on ere I see you again
Though Nature of verdure and flowers bereft you
Yet still art thou dearer than Albion's plain
England! thy beauties are tame and domestic
To one who has roved on the mountains afar
Oh for the crags that are wild and majestic
The steep frowning glories o' wild Lochnagar
Brave Caledonia, dear are thy mountains
I sigh for the valley o' dark Lochnagar
♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡
Ill-starred now the brave, did no vision foreboding
Tell you that fate had forsaken our cause?
Yet were you destined to die at Culloden
Though victory crowned not your fall with applause
Yet were you happy in death's earthly slumbers
To sleep wi' your clan in the caves of Braemar
The pibroch resounds to the piper's loud numbers
Your deeds to the echoes of wild Lochnagar
♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡
Brave Caledonia, dear are thy mountains
I sigh for the valley o' dark Lochnagar

+James Cooke I wondered about that.
