Great flight, Chris! On behalf of those of us who are home sick, unable to get to the airport and fly our own airplanes, thank you for letting us ride along. It was a treat!
That had to have been a sporty landing... you had the full on Michael Jordan tongue action going on on short final and a visible exhale of relief on roll out. Nicely done. Looking forward to seeing the upgraded panel and AoA indicator.
One thing we notice since our heater registers on the fuel flow and totalizer is while at wide open the heater can burn what the POH says, at low settings the fuel flow is greatly reduced. Our heater works very well and most of the time we are running it on the lowest setting with a very minimal impact on the remaining reserves. Just another thing you can test on a different flight. See how much it actually uses compared to what it says it will.
Nice adventure! Good calcs. I would never have pushed my Baron that far since I did not have any of the nice avionics you have when I quit flying. It was all by timing, experience of previous flights, and the POH....never the fuel gauges! I think you're making a wise investment in the new gear. Fuel management is good for safety, the engines, and your pocketbook!
Hi, I fly long legs in a BE-58 all the time. I changed out my IO-520s for Ram IO-550s with Gami injectors and fine wire plugs. I usually do about 10,500 to 12,500 with an oxygen bottle and run 2200 by 18 to 20 by 11.2 gallons per hour and 22.5 gph total and 180 KTAS. This is about the best you are going to do and still keep a reasonable airspeed in the stretch baron. We all know the totalizers are a garbage in garbage out instrument. My tanks are 200 total/194 useful by the book. I checked mine on the ground and during engine change out and actually all 100 a side was useful not 97 a side. Legally, of course it is 97. I wanted to know if it was less than 97. You have to make sure you are really topping the tanks and the wings are level. I fly a1066nm leg often and plan on 35 gallons on the ground. I never go under 30 gallons on the ground. I am always within 2 gallons for the entire flight. I had to adjust the shadin totalizer when I bought the plane. It is now within 1% which is crazy accurate running by tracking multiple tanks of fuel. Refueling can vary about 2 gallons for the baron because of not being exactly level. You pick up about 1 knot as you burn off each 100 lbs of fuel approximately. I found the heater uses about 1 gallon an hour on average. This is just a rough guess after 20 years using it. If you are down low in the baron and running out of fuel and ideas I've found minimum fuel flow is about 7.5 to 8 gallons a side light weight at 2000 rpm by 17 or 18 inches and about 130 KIAS. It should be noted that the manual says no takeoffs below 26 gallons (the yellow on the fuel guages) because of unporting the fuel in the tanks. I would use care if a go around was necessary. Absolute max range in the baron is probably 2100 rpm and flying slow which is not practical. I have found 17,500 feet, 2500rpm, 15 inches, 10.5 gph per side gave a 190KTAS at 140 KIAS at 5200 lbs gross weight. I have found fuel guages in general aviation aircraft to be inaccurate. I have found personally that fuel guages in airliners and military fighters are very good. I am very untrusting. I compare clock, totalizer and guages. I once had a totalizer reading higher than the guages, it was a dripping slow fuel line leak. I really like your videos and I think you are a really sharp pilot.
Endurance and range are two different things. A certain power setting and fuel flow will give you maximum range. 10 gph per side or 20 gph @ 136 gallons is 6+ hours range. However if you fly for Endurance then the minimum power setting for level flight adjusted for leaning will give you the most endurance or flying time. It's been awhile but I recall its near the best rate of climb speed. Of course keeping the engines running cool is more important. Fuel is cheap and new engines are expensive. Just my thoughts. There is the saying that says, headwind go faster and with tailwind go slower for saving fuel. The real test is how long can your SIC last without a pit stop and lunch along the way. Happy Flying
Nice upgrades! And good on you for getting an AoA indicator. I'm an ex-Navy pilot, and the Alpha systems unit was one of the first upgrades I installed in my Bonanza.

I don't know if you can control volume levels or not, but the ATC calls in the background drowned out a good part of your explanations in the first part of the video ... also, can you explain why the heater uses 2 gallons/hour to operate ....
Not sure exactly which model is installed on this Baron, but Barons have a “combustion heater” which literally burns fuel in a closed system to heat air in an exchange chamber... fuel+spark=fire=warm air to move through the cabin... at about 2 gal per hour total.
Very entertaining video. However I believe you unnecessarily suffered the cold because the cabin heater doesn’t burn 2 gallons an hour like you said in the video. It only burns a fraction of a gallon per hour. so little in fact that it doesn’t factor into fuel planning. Per the POH.
Smart request to climb 6000. Not only due to winds but also due to air density at those negative temps. Maybe some heated clothing will do you guys better than the 2gph heater. I enjoyed you guys stretching the tank. Well done.

I hope ANJ (NAA?) Avionics will setup your Avidyne TAS Skywatch Active Traffic with correlated traffic using your existing ADS-B in to allow for both. Just remember that even with a TAS active traffic system that you will not see traffic without a transponder. I work for a Part 145 Avionics repair station, and a correlated traffic picture is a beautiful thing to have when flying in the soup. Congrats on your new avionics... the JPI 930 is extremely nice as well. I am curious which AOA system you went with... Great Video!
Baron Pilot Ahhh, Okay... I have only heard of Northwest Arkansan Avionics, but found A&J in the AEA directory. The Alpha systems AOA looks like a good AOA system, but I can’t say that I have ever installed one myself. I am more fimilar with the Garmin GI-260 AOA... either way both of these products will be a nice upgrade for your Baron.
Of course, you know when you go back to get the airplane, the winds are going to be on the nose all the way home, too! Okay, JPI EDM-960, great choice. AOA indicator, excellent choice. Upgrading to ActiveSky (I think that's what it's called, I could go look, but I'm not going to), good choice. So, the next big thing, of course, is the PFD. Are you looking at that yet, and have you made a 'I'd like that in my cockpit' choice yet, even if it's not available yet. When is Kim going to get her ticket?
...as a long time subscriber...love you two and all your always interesting, informative, funny and entertaining videos...but while you're at it...looks like it might be time to paint them thar peeling red throttle knobs...as always, thanks again for sharing...safe flying and more knuckle bumps to you both....
I bet Kim would be happy to pay for some fuel and stay warmer. For us 'Yankee's' 26F is sweatshirt weather. lol Thank you for the video. Be safe ... "Spin"
I’m surprised no one else commented about the Citation call out you almost blurted out. That was funny! Did you forget this was a fun flight and not a work flight? I used to catch myself doing that frequently years ago, when I kept flying multiple planes. Easy mistake to make!
Thank You Very Much for Your Answers as I am learning a lot about aviation!! What is The actual altitude ceiling for Your particular Baron Airplane? do You generally top out at 10 or 11 thousand feet because it is kind of uncomfortable to fly with an oxygen mask for hours on long trip? I can see You flying around Florida and down to the Keys at lower altitude because there is a lot of cool stuff to see and all that scenery is Awesome.
You should have filmed what it's like climbing out of your seat and off the wing after a flight like that. Especially when you're cold soaked to the bone. I remember it being hard and slow, especially that last bit to the ground. Great flight you two. Looks a little cold for washing planes this time though. ;-) I guess that makes this video acceptable. LOL.
Mike Costello that would have meant I would have to get out, place the camera, then do it again! 🤣🥶 I could barely stand let alone do all that. Instead of ppl criticizing my plane wash, ppl kept saying they knew the winds HAD to be better higher and shouldn’t have wasted the chance to talk about a great subject and just flown with a fuel stop. But then how many would have said it was a boring flight?🤔🙄
@@flyingsic See, you guys do the camera work so well I (we) forget you have to do that back and forward stuff to make it look good! I love the chemistry you guys have though. I've been watching Kris almost since the beginning and it feels like I'm hanging with friends.
@@ralphhippard2995 She's saying there weren't any tail winds available, and the headwinds were best at the altitudes they flew. Sometimes that happens...
Great videos; I'm relatively new to general aviation (all mil and commercial). I've learned a ton watching. I just bought a '70 Baron B55. A quick question if I may? What is your tank config/wing? I have a 31 and 37 gallon; 136 total. If you have the two tanks did you run the aux dry?
Being in isolation for 2 weeks is a little easier when I can watch your great videos. Thanks to you both. 👍🇨🇦

A&J. I went with the Alpha Systems AOA. It will have a HUD on my dash as well as compensation for my flap settings.
Just like a pilot Chris, all the goodies for your plane but get Kim a coat and gloves too, lol
Ok that it then, modify comming up. I expect a refuel pod. Then you can do inflight refueling via tanker. Yip sorted.🤗✈😁
👏 Nicely dome, Kris! Kim has the patience of a saint! My wife is done at 3 hours! 😂
Amazing Video ! Keep doing a great job up there !
Great video Kris!
Hey that was really interesting! nice job!
Great upload and a nice way to take our minds off Covid 19. Thank you as always
...as a long time subscriber...love you two and all your always interesting, informative, funny and entertaining videos...but while you're at it...looks like it might be time to paint them thar peeling red throttle knobs...as always, thanks again for sharing...safe flying and more knuckle bumps to you both....
LR VANALLEN 👊🏻 thanks for being such a great viewer! We’re always looking for what viewers like you would like to see us discuss!
I would think that taking down your sun ☀️ screen and letting the warmer sun in would’ve helped warm you up. ?
Love that good southern ATC on Razorback lol
Check Mike Busch's over square video...full MP just bring the RPM back.
Great video & Flight!
Can you please tell which Sun Glasses do you both have? Really nice...
Ari Reches we wear Method Seven. We LOVE them!
nice flight!!!!!
Didn’t leave much fuel for the shop guys to run their trucks on.
Keymanofco he flew medevac the day before and went into work mode when he heard the words🤣 he hops in and out of at least 6 planes so its inevitable
Could be worse you could fly commercially flying a Cessna 404 with an 12hour total Endurance 😂 love your videos from the UK
Mike Costello thanks! Our interaction is pure and people think we’re crazy! We appreciate your continued support friend!
@@flyingsic Ha! You are crazy, but so are the rest of us who fly privately. I wouldn't want it any other way. Happy tailwinds!
afward100 exactly!
No heat or conserving fuel?
Curious about both of your good looking shades...what are they? 😎 CE560XLS+ and BE-S35
...and always bring along a couple of those handy little astronaut-endorsed clear heavy- duty plastic bottles...
That landing looked pretty stressful. Lots of tongue action 😁
Chris why dont you install oxygen and fly in the flight levels like Nikos wings does. You would get some nice tail winds there.
Ralph Hippard we have oxygen and do fly up there sometimes. This particular flight the winds were the lowest where we flew and got worse going higher.
@@flyingsic that would be a waste of fuel
@@ralphhippard2995 She's saying there weren't any tail winds available, and the headwinds were best at the altitudes they flew. Sometimes that happens...
Only reason I can think of to do that is for a zombie apocalypse, nice work, but I saw Kim shivering too.
Salut vous tank you vidéo magnifique super vol
Hey love the video quick question how do you guys have service while flying like the ability to use ForeFlight at higher altitudes
ForeFlight gets ads-b info from my Avidyne. As far as the briefing, you can download it before the flight.
I'm just curious, at 2200 RPM, are you subject to the Continental Advisory Bulletin CSB09-11A limiting the RPM to greater than 2300 RPM?
My engine is not part of that SB
Are you planning a flat screen for pilot side of panel?
M. 😉
Great video as usual..
Glad you enjoyed it
Great videos; I'm relatively new to general aviation (all mil and commercial). I've learned a ton watching. I just bought a '70 Baron B55. A quick question if I may? What is your tank config/wing? I have a 31 and 37 gallon; 136 total. If you have the two tanks did you run the aux dry?
68 a side. No aux tanks for me. 😎
