I had something similar happen : during the Leyawiin recommandation quest, out of curiosity I attacked Kalthar before he talked to me, so he was still marked as essential and wouldn't trigger his dialogue during combat. While he's unconscious you can loot his key and get away without talking to him. Sadly according to UESP that just makes the quest unfinishable :(

He basically just tried to "it's a prank, bro!" his way out of this
