I needed another vehicle so I purchased the 2016 Toyota Prius two Eco , so far in 1000 miles been avg.low 60 MPG without trying . The looks do grow on you ,color makes a difference and the side molding makes an appearance change especially from the side profile . Alex is spot on with his review as compared to my daily driving experience with same vehicle . Thanks Joe
Yes, Tech. We bought a '17 Touring 3 to replace a '15 Two, lease. It is much superior in every every way. and the looks are high tech, but sometimes awkward when viewing the back, from the side. We are considering selling our '15 SE Sienna and just having this one vehicle. The only thing stopping us is the utilitarian aspect of the Sienna. Thanks.
@@lsotojr1 I have a 2017 Prius 4. Overall average is about 63 mpg. I get more like 58 on the highway. As high as 68 for a day with more city driving. Up to 70 for single trips city driving.
@@lsotojr1 I never had a gen 2. I did have a gen 3 and got 53-58 per tank depending on the season/temperature. Gen 4 is much superior for me as you can tell.
After the initial shock, I am liking this all-new Prius (and its overall looks) more and more. That stellar MPG is simply too good to resist. Excellent review, Alex!
yes, the 4th gen is everything the 3rd was not...as long as it is remembered that acceleration falls off above 50. The new platform feels more like a sporty car, rather than just utilitarian.
Wife is averaging just over 60 mpg with her '18 Prius Two. The engineering in the car is amazing. We considered the Ioniq, but two factors swayed us in favor of the Prius. First, Toyota has far more experience and engineering knowledge base relating to hybrids than Hyundai does. Second, the Prius has a very well documented reliability history, and the transmission in the Ioniq was a big question mark, not worth the risk long term.
The Prius 4 is the best offer out on the market. Why? Strange but good and very interesting looks. Roomy like a turnier combi. Very good low fuel consumption, if you know how to drive the car very economical. Even an efficent electric car is no alternative. Most reliable car, will not leave you stranded somewhere sometimes. Will last longer than any other car. That's what I think and believe. I enjoy every ride with the P4 very much over more than 4,5 years and there are many more to come.
I used to hate the styling, but I have come to appreciate the eclectic look, especially the rear end. But I'm more interested in the Ioniq and Kia's upcoming Niro too.
Graham Jefferson i was disappointed with the Nero’s styling. In an effort to seem normal it ended up looking bland. The seats were uncomfortable as hell too. The interior styling was nice though.
You do the best reviews. Please also consider mentioning a commonly overlooked safety feature: front windshield pillars (A-pillars). It seems more and more vehicles are getting thicker A-pillars, which creates dangerous front/side view blind spots. Keep up the great reviews.
As always Alex is the man for car reviews -- I have a 2007 prius and while I like it I just can't bear the thought of owning two Prius (priii?) in my life -- I'm looking at the honda accord hybrid or the 2017 sonata hybrid...
Alex, would you please comment on the HVAC system of the cars you review please? How fast does it heat/cool the cabin...are the vents positioned well, can they be closed, etc. Thanks!
Excellent review! I own a 2018 Prius Two Eco, and I like it, and it is surprisingly roomy. I am about 6'2" with broad shoulders and once you're seated, it really doesn't feel that cramped at all. This is my 3rd Toyota Prius (before, I've owned a 2010 Prius and a 2013 Prius v). I love these cars, and I appreciate the technological innovation.
The interior noise level of 73 dB at 50mph seems pretty high. Other reviewers have commented the car is quiet. I wonder if the Eco trim Alex tested has less sound deadening or maybe noisier tires.
I'm not a huge fan of the instrument cluster being in the middle of the dashboard, I wish Toyota put it on the drivers side so that the driver can see it clearly.
IMO it's ugly, but actually better than a normal gauge once you get used to it. My favorite is the old Civic gauge that had the speed above the steering wheel and the tachometer in the traditional location behind the wheel. (goo.gl/Xtysos) I like the Prius gauge just slightly less since it's a little more in the periphery of your vision than the Civic one was, but you never need to actually look at either gauge because you can read the number while looking straight ahead. It's too bad Honda no longer makes that type of gauge, but I guess HUD are getting more common so it's a moot point now.
I thought with the curves and the color, this was a very sexy car. And with the money saved on gas this is clear and above a winner in my book. Only disappointment was the loss of the second glove box on passenger side. Would like to know what kind of mileage you get when you are trying? Has the EV only range increased/decreased?
Very thorough review! It's kind of a big stretch, but how would you compare this to the CT200h? It's been on the market for a while and is a luxury branded hybrid, but both use essentially the same powertrain and now have independent rear suspension.
Is it high time I had to start loving Prius-like cars?;) What I really like about the car, apart from the fuel economy,is the back of the car. btw- the tyres are NOT low profile, am I correct? ps You are among 4 best men who do testing , so carry on doing that!:)
Love it. I will be checking this one out at the dealer. COO is low. I was thinking a Civic. I will have to drive them knowing each is different. Thanks for the great review Alex!
Despite what Alex says, do yourself a favor and drive a Volt too. I just bought one (coming from a Volvo s60R) and it's superb. Definitely smaller than a Prius, but much nicer in many ways. Even only charging about twice/week, I am averaging 80-100 mpg. Great car.
HappyListener50 I currently can only charge my Volt about twice/week (only through October). Even with that, I manage to match or beat the latest Prius for operating costs, CO2 emissions, and total well-to-wheel efficiency (including all losses and electrical generation). Of course, once I can charge every day, that gap will grow tremendously. With that said, the Prius is bigger and gets better mileage on road trips, so the Volt isn't for absolutely everyone. I wouldn't use a Volt for a family of 4 adult-sized people. Rear seat headroom is tight.
Totally agree with others below...nobody reviews like Alex does...you are the BEST Alex! :-) I LOVE the new luggage test (funny I've done the same thing) with the 33 vehicles I've had. ;-) Also, really looking forward to your 2017 Accord Hybrid...I love my 2015 Touring Hybrid (BTW I'd gotten 1 Large Costco Bag and 4 "Carry On' Seized Costco bags in my truck for a 7 National Park 4,100 mile Tour with my wife and 2 girls by removing the false trunk floor.) It swallowed more luggage then my 2013 Avalon Hybrid Limited w/Tech. Anyway, the 2017 Accord has got me intrigued with... 1. +16 HP 2. Black Leather Interior (in the Pearl Orchid White) 3. Rain Sensing Wipers 4. Apple CarPlay 5. Auto High-Beam / Auto Low-Beam LED Headlights 6. Heated Rear Seats 7. Remote Engine Start 8. 5 MPG maybe better in real world 9. Front Parking Sensors, maybe? 10. LED Fog Lights 11. Illuminated Door Well Trim, maybe? 12. Collision Mitigation Braking 13. Road Departure Mitigation 14. Automatic Brake Hold 15. 13.5 cu.ft. (1.2 cu.ft. more in the trunk) 16. SPORT mode...looks interesting, too.
If I get less than 60 mpg per day on my Prius 3 using the Eco function, I know I am doing something wrong. If I get less than 50, my Toyota dealer says there is something wrong with the car.
HUD should be standard for Prius not just the upper trim. The instrument cluster is hard to read on a cloudy day and impossible to read on a bright day and frankly dangerous.
Great video. I'm looking forward to your 2017 accord hybrid review. I can't stand the look of the rear, but the trunk space is unbeatable. I wish there were a wagon version of Accord hybrid.
Great review as always. Keep up the good work. Can you tell me if the rear seats in the last gen Prius are better then this model. Leg room head room. For some reason it seems smaller in the back in the new one.. maybe it's the roof line that's making me feel that way.
Can anyone tell me how they expect the 2016 Prius to handle in snow? I currently drive a 2010 Prius and live in a northern US city. I deal with occasional blizzards, and snow that refuses to melt. Getting out of curb-side parking spots and snow drifts can sometimes be problematic. Conditions aren't so terrible that I need AWD, so I'd like to stick with an efficient hybrid. Is the 2016 worth it for me? If it's not, is there a comparable hybrid that would tackle snow drifts better than the Prius?
Alex. Great video as always. I wonder if you could tell me about rear leg room. I've got a 2nd gen Prius.. and I swear it looks like this new Prius has less rear leg room and head room. The roof line looks more couple than wagon / hatch like the older ones. Thanks.
Alex, thank you for your excellent review. I always felt all versions of the Prius were ugly, including the current model. I don't like it that the instrument panel is not directly in front of the driver, and it is off centered. I am looking forward to your review of the 2017 Accord Hybrid.
jr nascimento beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It was designed to appeal to it’s potential buyers. I personally love the edgy styling. As I said, it’s in the eye of the beholder.
Hi Alex! I'm thinking of getting a Prius at the end of the year and was thinking of buying new, but these older models seem to be great as well, right? Would you please give me any recommendations if I were to buy used? I understand the Prius Four is the "high end" Prius of (I'm guessing yours is) 2016, right? Any tips on what mileage is acceptable? Would a 50-100k mile 2016 four be alright? or a three? Not very familiar with these past year models yet. Thanks you so much!
i think that if you are low on cash, go for the older prius. if you can spend the extra cash for the 2016 model, its 100% better. I own a 2016 and i get an amazing MPG. I easily get 65 MPG and when i really try to drive the car as smooth as possible, i get 70-72MPG
He's referring to the patent dispute that ended in a patent exchange with minor royalties situation. In addition Aisin manufactured all Ford hybrid transaxles until recently. Toyota is Aisin's largest shareholder and is generally considered a major control interest in Aisin.
Sorry Alex but my 1.4TSI Golf averaged 59.2 Miles per gallon (UK measurement) on a 605 mile trip to Switzerland. It's petrol (or gas as you call it) . On very mixed driving I get 46 - 48 Mpg. Using US gallons - Long run 72 mpg - mixed 55 - 57 mpg. Golf wins hands down and is £5000 cheaper than the Prius in the UK for comparable models.
I dont think it has carplay but there is a company that sells a device that connects to your android or iphone and turns the screen in the car into the screen of your phone. so what ever your phone screen has, it duplicates it on the larger screen on the car.
its kind of just a weird set up of a traditional set up. you take the shifter and move to the direction of whatever you want the car to do, popping back in place one click away, they make it more directional so it has a feel and its easy to understand. The ones on chrysler vehicles are a shifter that goes back into place, but without feedback or direction. you would have to physically look at the shifter to tell if you are in drive for sure. its easy to navigate and get use to, but literally anyone can slip up in a blink.
Toyota really need to fire whoever designed this new Prius! It's one of the most ugly cars on the market right now! The Chevy Volt on the other hand is a lot more attractive.
Toyota is a HUGE company, which can design cars better than this ! This is an over-styled front and back - with dorky side proportions. The Toyota accounting-department must have done this job.
55nonni what are you talking about? This new design is awesome. A futuristic design that finally reflects the years of game changing innovation that this car represents.
The problem I have with the new Prius is that it is even uglier than the last model, and the interior design is a disaster. The bone white cup holders on certain models look like little baby toilets. I love the friendly looking Corolla inside and out. If they could Corolla-ize the Prius I would love it. The mean razor-dragon origami shapes of the new Prius seem to appeal to the Japanese, but I don't think most Americans like it judging by comments and reviews. A car should not look like it is going to bite you and then drag your corpse to hell. I like friendly looking cars.
Christopher Calder if they corolla-ized it then it’s target audience would stop buying it. The reason owners love it is because it’s so tech-forward and innovative.
Prius One wasn't ever released in the US and it was basically just a Camry of its time with the hybrid system thrown into it. Gen 2 was redesigned to be eye-catching instead and was the first released to the US and even then about halfway through its production cycle.
you have to compare it in the city. The diesel will never get 50+ mpg in the city. Also european gallons are larger than US gallons so you need to convert. Not a big prius fan though. I prefer fords approach to hybrids which doesn't change the look of the vehicle, or remove sound deadening/reduce interior material quality.
Daniel Blaney why not? 50 US mpg in city traffic is possible. Start-stop system, planning 10 seconds in advance and light foot. 50mpg from Prius is also from moderate foot. Prius (not plugin version) can regenerate very little. BMW B47 and B37 engines can get 50mpg in city. 60 us mpg on roads outside the city. I just travelled 2000km on BMW 530d (N57 engine). Steady speed 90km/h and exactly 48 us mpg. But this is a huge executive class vehicle on massive tires so not comparable with Prius.
All BS aside, Alex is on another level in his reviews over others, so well informed and thorough, it's not fair for the others.
Totally true. He puts a LOT of people to shame. Best RUclips car reviewer.
He's decent. Him sitting in the trunk is a silly, stupid gimmick imo.

Isn't the Ford C-Max hybrid a closer comparison to Prius?
Yes Alex the CMAX has a version of the toyota designed motor and is a much nicer car all the way around IMO
+b4804514 What do you mean? Toyota didn't design any part of the CMax?

C-Max should be competitor to Prius V

Is there room under the hood for a turbocharger?
For my old schoolers do you Remember the 1997 ford probe? this looks like it

I dont think it has carplay but there is a company that sells a device that connects to your android or iphone and turns the screen in the car into the screen of your phone. so what ever your phone screen has, it duplicates it on the larger screen on the car.
At least it won't kill you with its autopilot mode, cause it ain't got none
Dannnng that MPG score slam every other hybrid lol
Good idea with the suitcases, but you could have gone with beer cases instead. That way you would have been consistent with the Germans.
Change the tires, take a bit of a fuel economy hit and get the windows tinted. That Blue is the worst possible color to pick.
I can't stand the rear taillights and where the front turn signals are! I'll wait for the prius prime if it doesn't cost a crazy amount
Will make a good taxi.
YES agreed
The shift mechanism seems eerily the same as the Jeep that killed the Star Trek actor. Is there a big difference between the two?
its kind of just a weird set up of a traditional set up. you take the shifter and move to the direction of whatever you want the car to do, popping back in place one click away, they make it more directional so it has a feel and its easy to understand. The ones on chrysler vehicles are a shifter that goes back into place, but without feedback or direction. you would have to physically look at the shifter to tell if you are in drive for sure. its easy to navigate and get use to, but literally anyone can slip up in a blink.
+FluffyShark Datazz so the shift mechanism is similar to an arcade racing game?
I don't think a Prius will crush you :)
The difference is that the Prius has a dedicated *_park_* button on the dashboard.
+hitssquad Plus if you turn it off the park engages.
Toyota really need to fire whoever designed this new Prius! It's one of the most ugly cars on the market right now! The Chevy Volt on the other hand is a lot more attractive.
I'm sorry but the car looks like a Fisher Price toy. However, it is a nice gas performance car
This is just like a budget maclaren p1 or laferrari
LOL
The rear tail light is hideous and no apple car play is a bummer.
Still looks fugly, especially the back.
amen
Dear, TOYOTA WHO HAS C.D's anymore🤷🏾
Surely, no Honda civic yet?
He has done two reviews on two different civics.
Thumbs up if you see the beauty
ionic is not more mpg
Why even try to make it look like a vehicle your grandma would drive? Just no 👎
The UI on their software is so ugly. They really need to hire a UI designer.
Why did Toyota skip Prius One? Lol
Chris Capaccio there is a prius one, marketed mostly for fleets.
Prius One wasn't ever released in the US and it was basically just a Camry of its time with the hybrid system thrown into it. Gen 2 was redesigned to be eye-catching instead and was the first released to the US and even then about halfway through its production cycle.
Those Korean cars are all broken down by now
* Hyundai IONIQ
Disliked only because efficiency is not good enough compared with... for example... BMWs with 3-cylinder diesel engine. There are multiple options.
you have to compare it in the city.
But this is a huge executive class vehicle on massive tires so not comparable with Prius.
the same company that has defrauded the world with their emission cheating hardware and software? Go ahead.......fool me once........
deka360
What same company?
And I thought the Aztek was the industry's ugliest.
Is it possible to make a car more hideous than this?
I try to celebrate bold and different choices -- but my Gawd the back of this car is a deal breaker. Fugly!
