10 year old video, but still relavant! I am new to DMX and recently bought a similar mini-controller. This video really helped me understand how to operate it. Thank you!!
Really cool quick tutorial on using a 16x12 configuration DMX controller. I particularly like your video because so far, you are the only person to mention that if a fixture has more than 16 channels, the remaining will 'spill over' into the channels of the next fixture. 1 point that even you failed to mention is if that if a fixture has less than 16 channels, you can also have multiple fixtures under the same fixture button. In your case, using a 4 channel fixture, between 12 fixture buttons and just Page A of sliders, you can control 24 fixtures, and by using page A and B, up to 48 fixtures (with independent control of each)
for two years I have been frustrated with lights and programming. I just bought another giant bar/club and was researching lights and found this.. what a blessing to me.
Great video! The manual that came with mine was all of 4 pages long, and didn't go through ANY programming sequences. You had me up and running within 20 mins of watching the video.
Great organized, simple but detailed explanation of these dmx light controllers. For once I understand the basics of what can be done. Owned a similar controller for over a year and just learned how to use it. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Will follow you and your products.
Thank you for the great explanation for the DMX!!! Extremely well detailed explanation. Now I can understand it for my basic light show.!Once again Thank You!!!
thank you. I try to give my customers more resources and tutorials than what is typical, so they can get up and running quickly and use our products efficiently to generate revenue.
These units appear to be sold under many different brand names (and no-names) with the front panel paint job and button shape being the only apparent differences. I recently got one from ebay brand new for $36, with free shipping, to learn the basics of DMX for an upcoming project. Here's my experiences with it so far: Right away, I noticed the LED display acting goofy. I figured out that was falsely sensing movement of the 'speed' slider, causing the display to flip back and forth between its modes. Now for the BIG letdown: Although the manual implies that you can set 'hold' and 'fade' times for individual scenes while programming them, there is no instruction on how to do so. After much experimenting and research, I've concluded it can't be done. That made it basically useless for my application, which requires different timings on a scene-by-scene basis, for unattended automatic playback. Then I thought oh well, it's still good for manual operation, using the one-touch scene buttons to fade from one scene to another, so I tried that. (Big buzzer sound goes here.) Nope. The speed and fade sliders only work while playing back a bank or a chase, and whatever you set them for applies to all scenes. The manual also states that you can run multiple chases "simultaneously" (a fairly complex operation). (Big buzzer again.) 'Sequentially' is what they meant. My unit also features an unlabeled, undocumented Mystery Switch on the back, which makes it quit communicating with the lights. Research says it is a DMX polarity reversal switch, because some lights may have their polarity reversed. How thoughtful, simply flip that switch to make that light work, and the rest quit working, SIMULTANEOUSLY! On the bright side, it was only $36, and is useful for testing DMX fixtures.
Old video but still awesome explained mostly everything I wanted to know except for setting fixture addresses would be nice description had a link to the website. And a link to the manual. I come from the old school par can style where you had one fader representing one color usually white unless you had a gel. I see what you did there each scanner (fixture) button represents a bank of channels and each fixture needs to be 16 channels off of each other, then when enabled will duplicate colors & functions and can be programmed into something.
Great video. Can you do a short video on using this with 2 or 4 moving head lights? I have 4 and they are all 16 channels. If you can go through a very simple on programming the intelligent lights, I am sure a lot of people would be grateful. Thanks again Mike.
not sure then. I'll have to set up 2 lights with the board and try it out here after the weekend. I only use software controllers for our shows. we made these hardware controllers for customers who don't want to go the software route. so not using the boards myself on a constant basis, I'll have to see if I can replicate your issue.
unlimited depending on your end channel set up on the lights. you have only 192 end channels available but if your doing banks of fixtures all on the same six starting address, than you can put an unlimited number
Hello! I am a beginner with all this and I like your instructional video. Can you demonstrate how to use moving head mini lights in scenes and chases? That would be helpful indeed. Thanks!
It depends on tje board snd how good the documentaion is. Personally for more complex shows i recommend a siftware solution which gives more control and easier to arrange and visualize.
each fixture switch has 16 channels, so fixture 1 would start on Dec address 1 and if you go more than 16 channels, you will have to use fixture button 2 to continue for the rest of the channels of the light.
But how would I program the two Fixtures, from the controller I connected to the Gig Bar 2 and from the Gig Bar to the gig bar LT, I have this controller that I borrow from a friend of mine, but it is really hard to program when both fixtures are connected, I can do one, but not two, and I haven't seen any video that shows someone explaining using these kind of fixtures lights, do you have one? I would like to know what channels do I have to set them up, both DMX 1?
No you can't set both to sms 1 because they have different numbers of channels. I would suggest reading up on the basics of sms protocol. It might answer many of your questions.
it works perfectly with my gigbar and my wall washes , but my 86 LED RGB par cans are flickering when ran with your DMX controller that I just baught, but they do not flicker when controlled by my Chauvet Foot C DMX controller. Do you know why?
you can have more then 12 fixtures.. the controller just says fixtures.. it should be marked as channels.. 1/16 17/32 and so on.. you can have have 3 fixtures ( rgbw pars ) on 16 channels. it can handle 192 dimmers :-)
This video has been really helpful, but I’m finding that any chases I set up tend to follow each other eg if I press chase 1 then auto/del I get chase 1. If I then press chase 2, it continually follows chase 1. I don’t seem to be able isolate one chase. Any suggestions?
Muhammed, if you need to use a 13th fixture on a separate DMX starting address from the first 12, you cant. you can control 12 fixtures on 12 different DMX starting addresses. you can have an unlimited number of fixtures on a fixture button if they all are on the same DMX starting address corresponding to that fixture button. however, if you want each light to have its own starting address, then you can only have 12, provided each fixture does not have more than 16 DMX channels on it.
Really old video but in case you are reading these do you have an idea why my music sync mode works like 75% of a time but 25% of the time when I tap on it all of the lights kind of spaz out and just flicker really fast and it runs through the scenes really fast without any sound stimulation. It just goes crazy. Then sometimes it will settle down and the lights will be solid until I start tapping or playing music. Other times, if I turn off the controller which is a 192 and then turn it back on it works properly again. Very intermittent. Any ideas? Thanks for a great overall video and maybe you have some thoughts on this, thanks!
Hi there, I recently got my hands on a controller like this as I am working on a theatre project for youths with special needs. I have read all the tutorials and instructions to chase modes and all, but what I really want to do is to fade between different static scenes without chases. I can't find any information as to how to programme fade time into the scenes so that a crew member can press the scene 1 for song 1, scene 2 for song 2. Could I have gotten the wrong type of product?
it shouldn't turn off the first scanner. how many channels are on your scanner? if more than 16, you may have overlapped into fixture button 2. that wou l do cause some irregularities if you pressed the 2nd fixture button.
first thanx for this video realy help full.i have question. when i have both skanner buttens on and want to first adjust one skanner, and then push skanner butten again to adjust the NeXT fixture it turns of the skanner when the led goes black almost as blackout anny idea why???
hello there..I need some clarification about the DMX Disco 240..the dmx provides me with a 12 fixtures control..but what do I need to do if I wish to use a 13th fixture?? the dmx provides also some button concerning scan, what're these for??
Hi maybe stupid question, I like manual control of the lights. So hypothetically if I set a fixture doing something I like. If I move to another fixture number (by selecting say 2 and deselecting 1) the first fixture will turn off? The way around this is to program the first changes into a scene? Am I understanding this correctly? I just want to dynamically change a set of lights, kind of as if I had multiple pages of faders.
Hi, I have a Chauvet Gig Bar 2 and a Gig Bar LT , I want to use a Master DMX Controller 192, can you tell me how can I control these set of two lights. One has 23 channels and the other 17. Thanks
will Sugg - When did you purchase from us so I can look up your record. The board has gone through a few software upgrades. Need your name on the Lumin Lights invoice, email and purchase date along with address to look up your account.
How do you cancel a scene and go back to manual mode? So I am just getting started. I have a scene programmed for #1 and when that gets going the only way to stop it seems like by hitting another scene. thanks
Hi Mich, I have 6x RGBW Par Cans go with DMX-512 controller. I select U255 white mode & save 54x3w LEd par can with DMX cable interlink, when I switched on power, i found that my 6 Led par cans unable to dim low to hi lumens, the faders only act as fade on & off only which not i wanted this way. Appreciates if you could show me on You-tude how to program DMX512 to enabling to dim my current 6x 54x3w RGBW Led par can to dim Lo to Hi individually with the fader slider. How's the configurations Thanks . Rgds- Steven
Steven, give me the lumin lights model #'s of the par cans and controller as well as the date you purchased from us and your address so i can look up your order.
When I set up the DMX address on the back of the mini PAR light, the "d" blinks rapidly next to the 3-digit address. And the PAR light doesn't respond to the control board. Why is it doing that?
I have a question for you Mike. First off great tutorial - very informative. I'm trying to use a DMX 192 for a ballet recital and I'd like to learn how to program smooth transitions from scene to scene. Is there a way to program fades from scene to scene on the DMX 192? Thanks
Dear highlighted, when did you purchase this from us abd under wgat account name abd address so i can look up your order. The boards have gone through several software changes which effect the way they function.
My controllers color order is different and when I push the Number 1 slider up, I get blue, when I push the number 2 slider up I get red, when I push the number 3 slide up I get green. If I pull the number 1 slider down all the colors go off. I have to keep the number 1 (blue ) slider up in order to see the other colors. I can not get this controller to show individual RGB colors. HELP!!!!
Christopher - perhaps your channels are getting mixed up. Is your DMX fixture a 3 or 5 or 7 or how many channel fixture? Some basic DMX fixtures have 3 channels R,G and B. Some are 5 channel fixtures A, R, G, B & S where R,G,B is Red, Blue Green and A is Strength (Normally you would have this at 100% for the lights to show.) S would be for a sound option where the fixture has an internal microphone and the fixture would flash depending on the volume of the music. Some fixtures are 7 or perhaps 8 or even 33 channels where the extra channels are for sensitivity, gobo, focus, xyz co-ordinates for moving-head lights etc. Hope this helps. PJ :¬)
Look i have a centerprice or tritec and the 3 mirrors can be handled separately my question is how can i make to move to the mucica shopping mirrors with consla in audioritmico mode. it is understood
+oli smith so for example any light i assign to fixture one i can have set to red on sceen one so that if i move the fader those light change red to me set % and so on
When I play a chase, all the chases play one after the other - not just the one I select. For example, I select Chase 1 and hit the auto button, it scrolls through all 8 scenes and then automatically moves onto chase 2 etc. etc. How do you limit it to just one scene?
Hi mike. Gr8 instructional video. If I may ask you two questions here, I would like to know how many times can you keep on adding scenes to a chase? Please allow me to rephrase that same question in much more detail. We have 30 banks of 8 scenes. So, if we work on chase #4, we can select bank 7 scene 7, then bank 3 scene 1, then, again, bank 7 scene 7, and bank 3 scene 1, again. So now we added four scenes to chase #4, even though they were only 2 scenes that are stored in our banks. The question then is if we keep adding scenes to chase #4, then how many scenes can chase #4 hold? Question #2: on the controller there is something called STEP. Can you teach me and tell me all about step? What is it? How does it differ from scenes? What role or what is the significance that it plays in a chase? How do I add and delete a step? Where is the step stored? Thanks in advance. I appreciate all you can share.
Perfect! Thank you so much! I have a question, I have 3 lights that don't have a number led display on the back of them, just dip switches. What settings do I use them? And what lights do you recommend to have more than three colors in them?
Pedro - most lights have only 3 or 4 colours: red, green, blue and sometimes white. You can change the colour of the light by mixinig red with green and with blue... so for purple you would use some/all red channel and some/all of the blue channel. For the DIP switch have a quick read of the manual. Usually dip switch 10 needs to be on and the you use a binary number starting from the left. So for DMX address 5 for instance you would use Binary DIP switches 1 and 3. The value of dip switch 1=1, switch 2=2, switch 3=4, switch 4=8, switch 5=16 and so on, so add the value of switches 1 and 3 = 1 + 4 = 5. Hope this helps. Best of luck. PJ :¬)
Great tutorial, very well explained! Question: Is it possible to add fade up’s/fade down’s to a scene? For example I’d like a scene where all lights fade up from 0% to 100%.
Hey Mike, Im having a Problem trying to hookup my older set of Chauvet 460LS 4 par can light system with stereo input to my 512 Lixda DMX Controller, Help

luminlights do you know how much you have copied the obey 40 Chauvet
Do you ship in Kenya?
Great, helpful video for those learning dmx lighting shenanigans...
awesome best and and the easiest tutorial to follow so far. thank you for the video
we are here to help.
Is that the same as the Chauvet obey 40? Except a fraction of Chauvet's prices? That's a really good video that.

you can have have 3 fixtures ( rgbw pars ) on 16 channels. it can handle 192 dimmers :-)
You forgot to mention that this is the most basic tutorial video and it works on most boards
Check the dam chart for the light your trying to control. Also make sure the light is in the correct channel mode for the way you want to use it.
Yes it will work with lasers as long as the laser is a DMX fixture.
This video has been really helpful, but I’m finding that any chases I set up tend to follow each other eg if I press chase 1 then auto/del I get chase 1. If I then press chase 2, it continually follows chase 1. I don’t seem to be able isolate one chase. Any suggestions?

It depends on when you bought the unit from us and which software version it is.
Hi there,
I recently got my hands on a controller like this as I am working on a theatre project for youths with special needs.
Yes, as long as they follow the standard dmx protocol.
it shouldn't turn off the first scanner. how many channels are on your scanner? if more than 16, you may have overlapped into fixture button 2. that wou l do cause some irregularities if you pressed the 2nd fixture button.

Thanks! Amazing value!
Can I program different lights as long as the addresses are different? EX. 4 different model ADJ lights and 4 different chauvet lights all together?
Hello! Would your controller work on a moving head laser. I am looking for something not to expensive that will work with my laser. Thanks!
hello there..I need some clarification about the DMX Disco 240..the dmx provides me with a 12 fixtures control..but what do I need to do if I wish to use a 13th fixture?? the dmx provides also some button concerning scan, what're these for??
Not sure as we are not really selling this product anymore and its been a long time since ive played with it.

Hi,
I have a Chauvet Gig Bar 2 and a Gig Bar LT , I want to use a Master DMX Controller 192, can you tell me how can I control these set of two lights. One has 23 channels and the other 17. Thanks
Great video... so it's not possible to manualy fade in between 2 scenes right? it will only snap... is that right?
Excellent.
will Sugg - When did you purchase from us so I can look up your record. The board has gone through a few software upgrades. Need your name on the Lumin Lights invoice, email and purchase date along with address to look up your account.

Can make a video tutorial on how to fade on scene 1 to scene 2? please many ppl is having the problem doing the fade thing...
this works with laser too? sorry for dumb question new to this thanks
Perfect man thank you
Can you have 2 sets of lights each set displaying 2 different colours?
Hi luminlights! I have the same of this one but won´t communicate with my Cameo Flat Par Can?
Steven, give me the lumin lights model #'s of the par cans and controller as well as the date you purchased from us and your address so i can look up your order.
When I set up the DMX address on the back of the mini PAR light, the "d" blinks rapidly next to the 3-digit address. And the PAR light doesn't respond to the control board. Why is it doing that?
Are the controller and par light lumin lights products or another manufacturer?
I have a question for you Mike. First off great tutorial - very informative. I'm trying to use a DMX 192 for a ballet recital and I'd like to learn how to program smooth transitions from scene to scene. Is there a way to program fades from scene to scene on the DMX 192? Thanks
does this work with any brand of lights? example American dj?
Will Donner wireless dongles work with this controller?
Dear highlighted, when did you purchase this from us abd under wgat account name abd address so i can look up your order. The boards have gone through several software changes which effect the way they function.
My controllers color order is different and when I push the Number 1 slider up, I get blue, when I push the number 2 slider up I get red, when I push the number 3 slide up I get green. If I pull the number 1 slider down all the colors go off. I have to keep the number 1 (blue ) slider up in order to see the other colors. I can not get this controller to show individual RGB colors. HELP!!!!
Christopher King, that's what my controller does too! If 1 is all the way down, I have no lights.
Christopher - perhaps your channels are getting mixed up. Is your DMX fixture a 3 or 5 or 7 or how many channel fixture? Some basic DMX fixtures have 3 channels R,G and B. Look i have a centerprice or tritec and the 3 mirrors can be handled separately my question is how can i make to move to the mucica shopping mirrors with consla in audioritmico mode. it is understood
the short answer is, it depends on how the dmx chart on your light is set up.
How can I connect my console with my pc?
Can you program the scenes buttons to the faders.. so i can have difrent coulours set for difrent banks of fixtures
+oli smith so for example any light i assign to fixture one i can have set to red on sceen one so that if i move the fader those light change red to me set % and so on
Hi, can you control a regular light with that?
My lights won't come on at all it reverts back to strobe? The 1-4 sliders wont turn on rgbw lights
When I play a chase, all the chases play one after the other - not just the one I select. For example, I select Chase 1 and hit the auto button, it scrolls through all 8 scenes and then automatically moves onto chase 2 etc. etc. How do you limit it to just one scene?
Is it our board and software version?
Thanks that helps
no the scenes buttons are independent from the faders.
Perfect! Thank you so much! I have a question, I have 3 lights that don't have a number led display on the back of them, just dip switches. What settings do I use them? And what lights do you recommend to have more than three colors in them?
Pedro Garcia dip switch app available on app store. For lights with more than 3 colors, see our website.
PJ :¬)
Yes in gradual steps.
It should as long as its a DMX fixture.
were do u get the light from and were do u get the wire to connect from te controller to the light
Hi jack, everything in the video are our products you xan buy from our site luminlights.com
our unit is not available through retail outlets but you can get one thru our website.
luminlights
How many lights can it control at a time
Are you sure it's not a MIDI IN? In which case, a midi file sync'd to the music can control all the scenes. I can't see the sense of a MIDI OUT.
It is MIDI in, not out.
its a dmx output because it is a dmx board not a midi controller
Great tutorial, very well explained! Question: Is it possible to add fade up’s/fade down’s to a scene? For example I’d like a scene where all lights fade up from 0% to 100%.
Hey Mike, Im having a Problem trying to hookup my older set of Chauvet 460LS 4 par can light system with stereo input to my 512 Lixda DMX Controller, Help
Not familiar with a 512 Lixda controller as it's not one of our products. I would consult your manual that came with the unit.
What is that link your showing me? Did you buy the controller from lumin lights or that dutch website you sent the link to?
Hey man,Great video. I learned a lot from you. One question, can you adjust the music mode sensitivity ?
Can this unit fade between scenes? Not within a chase, but fade when manually pressing the scene buttons. Thanks
Only if the next scene starts with a fade.
New York Party Productions How do you start a scene with a fade??
only if the scene is programmed with a fade.
Hi there Andrew - can you tell me please - did you ever find out if this can be done? Thanks very much. PJ :¬)
