    I saw this a while ago on kickstarter and completely forgot about it before this video. Looks like a very ambitious game which can kill a lot of indie projects, especially with open world titles, not to mention how each creature needs its own unique gameplay style. I’m no programmer but seems like a ton of work and I hope the team manage to pull through.

      Exactly my thoughts, the monsters seem to have quite a variety of skeletons even if they're 159 ish

  • @kaleendo
    @kaleendo 2 года назад +23

    Personally I think there are a lot of concepts with the game where I think the devs bit off more than they can chew:
    - The way they develop new mons, it doesn’t really seem like different moves could be learned by all mons. Not having that extensibility will be an issue as they develop more and more monsters (trust me I know exactly how much work it is)
    - The type system strategic “countering” isn’t going to be reflected in the gameplay in the end and definitely isn’t now imo
    - I can’t remember how many monsters were promised but I remember it was quite a lot for a third person action game. I think it was a number near 200
    - The personality/specialized dialogue stuff sounds kinda nutty. Seems like an ambiguous and ambitious feature.
    - Open world and dedicated PvP game are both massive amounts of work
    I don’t think they will make it to full release on the delayed year (2024). I don’t suspect they have too many kinfolk saved up in the back. Maybe a dozen or two dozen. That’d be my guess.
    But I think that’s all fine because they have so much planned. The game will get made and it’ll be awesome, it’s just going to take a long time. And when it does get made, I think it will be well received automatically based on all of these massively desired things. The game is definitely not a scam and taking a long time won’t ever make it a scam. It’s just one of the most ambitious monster taming titles ever and it’s going to take even longer than what is currently predicted I think. But people will love it for that once it’s done.

    • @dangernoodle5831
      @dangernoodle5831 2 года назад +5

      This is a very well articulated comment. That raises a lot of valid concerns. I believe they ended up with 159 planned creatures after the Kickstarter was done. Can you elaborate a bit more with what you mean by ‘with the way they develop new mons’?
      Also, you’re the dev behind Grimmlins Tale right? I recall seeing you comment frequently

    • @kaleendo
      @kaleendo 2 года назад +7

      @@dangernoodle5831 I recognize you as well! Yes, I am the developer of Grimmlins Tale.
      On the way they develop new mons, I generally mean that from what I can tell, they might not be developing their monsters/their moves in a way that is as extensible as I feel they would need for the scope/scale of it all.
      I might be wrong about what's under the hood though, but I can elaborate on what I mean. From what I can tell, when they make a new kinfolk they essentially have to make the assets (vfx, animations, and code) for their moves newly every time for every kinfolk. Pokemon for example, doesn't do this at all. They animate pokemon in idle, taking damage, walking, doing a ranged attack or two, and doing a physical attack or two. This is why tail whip in Pokemon Sword and Shield rotates the pokemon in place. Not an immersive choice, but a choice in the name of extensibility. If they didn't do this, and instead wanted an actual tail whip animation then essentially for each physical move with a different motion 900-1000 more animations would need to be made and accounted for in the game code. Extensibility is important when developing with limited resources for a game in a genre like monster tamers since everything is just multiplied by hundreds with so many characters.
      I am not an avid player of the alpha myself, but I have seen people play it. I believe that for a lot of moves, only one specific kinfolk is really able to use it. What I mean is that Slyphur for example has a dash/pouncing move with an animation to match this action, but I don't believe all or any other kinfolk has an animation to work for this move as well. Or I don't think there is a digging animation for any kinfolk besides shovel butt. Also I'm speaking on the alpha where they only learn like 5-6 moves (I would assume there may be more learnable by the mons in the future, so even more need to be made one by one). If each move for each mon needs custom animations, vfx, and code, then I don't know if they'll actually be able to accomplish that even in a very long time. They may either need to figure out a way to apply moves to all monsters like what I'm trying to do, or maybe scope back something (either number of monsters or moves or something).
      In Grimmlins Tale, any move can be slapped onto any mon theoretically. I always make at least these 12 animations so that all monster could theoretically use all attacks: basic attack, ranged attack, physical cooldown, take damage, die, jump up, float up, float down, electrocuted, idle, and walk. This dictates/limits what kinds of cooldowns/animations I can plan my moves for, but it also means, if I want say 100 attacks, I will only have to implement 100 attacks, and I can spread the functionality/assets of those attacks around onto multiple Grimmlins. I sacrifice some design freedom to multiply my work by each monster (80x) as long as I can still design cool moves and animations around my animation constraints.
      In Pokemon, any pokemon can use mega punch theoretically, because the visuals are animated entirely through vfx and nothing moves from its spot. Tons of variables are controlled. In Kindred Fates, everything has to be done more precisely to feel good in terms of placement, animations (especially), programmed functionality, and vfx. I think it is cool and fun that there is a lot of uniqueness to mons and their moves in how kindred fates seems to be doing it, but it does worry me as a developer just thinking about all of the work ahead.
      Do let me know if I'm wrong and any kinfolk can use any move. Or if there are at least some moves that can transfer over. And like I said, I'm very pro Kindred Fates. I'm rooting for them to awaken a whole sub genre of real-time monster taming that'll help me out one day with grimmlins AND be fun to play personally.

  • @elvickRULES
    @elvickRULES 11 месяцев назад +1

    They really need to do what Palworld has done and get the game polished enough and release it on Steam in EA giving keys to backers (like me).
    I’m sure they’re probably kicking themselves right now that Palworld has succeeded so high. I’m not sure this would’ve done as much but I think it would’ve probably sold a good million or more if they had released with some good marketing.
    The thing that got me to back it despite not liking to back anything (because what has happened with it), is the idea of the kinfolk “flame” fading out. If done right, it could really push a deep connection between the player and the monsters.
    At this point I’m a bit jaded and don’t even think it’ll come out. But we shall see. That there’s not a newer video from you on it I’m not really given any new hope

  • @separated9560

    Nice video Ed, I agree overall with the points you made but as one of the really only 4 regularily active players in the alpha right now, I'd like to add a few things:
    First of, you correctly identified that the devs have two very different mindsets when it comes to communicating details about the gameplay and details about the story and Kinfolk (the creatures).
    Gameplay is discussed very openly, with a few developers even partaking in regular open conversation on the discord with people giving feedback on the combat in the alpha. I have talked to multiple devs personally, and by their interactions with the community I would be surprised if the passion of at least those devs I talked to is faked. To anyone thinking in that direction: I find it highly unlikely that KF is a scam.
    Rob (the creator and lead of Kindred fates) has expressed a strong opinion of revealing as little as possible about the single player content, which is what poeple in the Kindred Fates community are generally most exited about, and leads to most of the criticism.
    Reveals of new Kinfolk designs are infrequent, as part of the same philisophy, they want to keep most of the designs a secret until launch. The alpha has been updated regularily, and me and a few others are trying to give quality feedback, but I feel like the effectiveness of the community feedback for the combat is not that great overall since there are very few active people in the alpha right now (which isn't really that unusual for a premium alpha with a community of this size).
    A personal concern of mine are also the visuals and sound of the game at this point, although it is fair to assume that work on that is reserved for a later stage of developement and it might be a bit early to critique that quite yet.

    • @dangernoodle5831
      @dangernoodle5831 2 года назад +4

      Yeah the visuals are a bit of a concern as well. I think it might partially be, for me, because a lot of other kickstarted mon games usually have a set artstyle early on. While KF still seems a bit undecided and inconsistent. At the same time I don’t know enough about game development as to whether this is common 😅

    My biggest advice to anybody making a kickstater/game/project is this: Don't over promise. The game looks promising but I get the feeling that the devs have alittle too much work on their hands trying to work on all the stretch goals that were made. Lastly, I really hope this game gets all the dev time it needs and is released only when it's 100% complete.

I hope they know what they are doing while also listening to their fans and audience. I know it's not a AAA company making this game, but there have been small groups or individuals that have blown us away with writing or some creative designs, so fingers crossed.

Nice turn-based combat with speed settings and (nearly-) auto-skip for battles when overleveled. Little to no random encounters (only in extremely limited areas), most encounters are in the overworld. Great animations, great sound, great designs of monsters, weapons, armors, cities and the world in general. Exploration feels nice, though I wish the areas were slightly bigger, but maybe I'm just being greedy. Nice story, not really complex or too deep, but consistent and gets things moving. Monster customization with genes is great, though the egg hunting can get a little grindy for some specific genes.

    I have a weird relationship with KF. On one side, I still want to believe that the game will be faithful to Skymill's initial vision when they launched the Kickstarter campaign. On the other end, even though they post info about the single player campaign in the newsletters frequently, I'm still left feeling that I backed a PVP-focused arena game more than a full-fledge monster taming RPG with PVP aspects. And I know the team is particularly protective of the story and kinfolk, but I feel like showing a little more of the world they are building, how your relation with your kinfolk affects dialogues, etc would go a long way into keeping the community interested and hyped about the single player campaign. They have been improving on that over the last few newsletters, but we'll see if this keeps up.

They've barely put a dent in the total number of creatures they promised, let alone co-op, dungeons, etc. Unfortunately this is going to either be released and used to keep the devs from being homeless via Steam Early Access sales and then abandoned or they'll release a fraction of the content, call it released, and disband.
