  • Hellooo, I wanted to share the types of vegan backpacking food I pack and eat during a 3-4 day hike.
They are easy to pack, lightweight and no-cook, so you don't need to carry a stove. Ideal for summer trips.
Some think it's hard to hike on a plant-based diet, but it's really not. These nutrient-dense foods keep me fuelled the whole trip and I highly recommend non-vegans give this a go too, even just for one trip and see how they feel afterwards.
There's so much research that links a healthy plant-based diet to having better energy levels, better wellbeing, and a better recovery time.
Watch the Netflix documentary 'What the Health'. There's a great section on there about vegan athletes.

Many thanks for a great vegan video! For UK based folk all the ingredients are readily available , and this is totally do-able! If you are into Dr Michael Greger at Nutritionfacts.org there is a 'Daily Dozen' app available, and if there is a vegan video that needs to be made - it is how to make a Hiker version of the 'Daily Dozen' - my guess that would be a whole load of dehydrating of veggie greens, and other veg. While this video is well put together, some other tips to consider - ground flax seed (Lidle's supermarket breakfast section) add a tablespoon into the cold soaked oats mix, Vegetable stock cube makes for a great Base for soup in a cup - add dehydrated veg to complete, Mushrooms are a great way to change up protein intake, completely agree with Make-Your-Own energy bars, I quite like starting with a basic oat Flap-Jack recipe and dialling down the sugar but dialling up dried fruit and nuts/seeds. Finally non of the Vegan hiking vids mention the joy of a decent Coffee out on the Trail. A pop-can stove, 750ml pot a simple pot stand and boiling water is no problem - but the magic to great coffee is pour the boiling water into a separate mug - allow the heat to soak into the mug for a minute or two, then stir in a teaspoon or two of real ground coffee (and any sugar - mine's Muscavado) let it brew in the cup - the coffee grounds all sink to the bottom and you drink fantastic coffee off the top (and none of the faff of filters etc). Hopefully some useful comment here! Thanks for a great Vegan Hiking food video - inspiring!

Wow you really did a good job of making so much on your own! I really like the idea of making the roasted beans. They’re a great snack, but also, if you wanted/needed to, you could also rehydrate them into a soup.
I noticed someone commenting on the liquid soy milk. An easy answer would be to bring powdered soy milk, or another nut milk powder if desired, and simply hydrate what you need at the time.

I pack out a liter of soy milk for my special treatment of breakfast on the third day. It probably is all a mental state but it helps me to power thru on the morning that I have had the most problems getting off the mattress & out of the tent. Nice Vid!

Thank you :) I sometimes pack some extra goodies at the bottom of my bag and save them until the very last day. A treat for the way home :)

Do you have a vid showing a layout of what you would actually take on something like a 5-day hike with no resupply? There's WAY too much food on the table for most people to be able to put into perspective on their own. Some perspective is likely needed bc no one would ever want to carry around things like 3 litres of that chocolate soy liquid, to name just one thing.

Hi Aaron. Good suggestion, I don't have a video yet but will work on it and let you know when it's up. Agree on perspective, this video just gives a variety of options I like to take. But you certainly don't need 3 litres of the soy milk, just enough to cover oats. You could even use water to save space and add a flavoured nutritional powder.

A.J. Hart, Drink, food, medical and shelter are priority. You work your pack around that. First need, then want. You learn quickly what was and wasn't worth it to take, what you used vs what you didn't.
