- Kay Thompson and THE WILLIAM BROTHERS ON THE KATE SMITH SHOW 12/12/51
I was just watching Liza at the Palace where they claimed THERE WAS NO VIDEO of Kay Performing with the Williams Brothers anything from their famous night club act. So happy they were wrong! ENJOY!! Приколы
OK, now I see why in 1947 "they were the highest-paid nightclub act in the world, breaking records wherever they appeared".
Kay Thompson was an outstanding person in the entertainment industry in many respects.
And she did create a phenomenon called Andy Williams as we know him.
Lol, they tried so much to emulate the dances of blacks😅 and still do today. Well, at least it shows there was nothing going on, but the dances we created
You are absolutely correct. Everyone said that there were no films of their performances; yet you found one! What a thrill this was to see! Thank you so much for sharing this very special performance. A most wonderful gift in these wee small hours of the morning.
KAY THOMPSON AND THE WILLIAMS BROTHERS performing "Louisiana Purchase" on NBC-TV's "The Kate Smith Evening Hour," December 12, 1951, backed by Harry Sosnik and his orchestra.
thanks for the added info.
There is a great deal of KT's coaching in Judy Garland's singing gestures and dancing style, from the mid-40's on.
Thanks for posting this! I'm so glad I got to see Andy Williams in Branson.
The fabulous Kay Thompson!
I'm currently reading Andy Williams's autobiography, and he too said there was no surviving footage of Kay Thompson performing with he and his brothers. What a great discovery! (And how surprising to read of Andy's affair with Kay, after their act broke up... though it would have been much sooner if Andy had had his way). Thanks for posting!
if any of the Williams' brothers survive, would prob. be a happy moment for them to see this video. Does anyone know if any of them survive?
@@glennfromthebronx There is a fantastic audio clip of the Williams Brothers singing as children. A clip of it was featured on the Andy Williams show when he had the Osmond Brothers on one time. It was on RUclips but was removed for some reason.
Apparently, Cougars have been around forever.
I'm just as pleased to see Kate as I am Kay! Kate had quite the scandalous personal life in the late 20s and early 30s, dating and romancing many men but never marrying. The ridiculous cancelling of her entire body of work because someone found two songs in 3,000 offensive should be in question, especially as she often didn't have a choice. (Know who else sang those two songs? Bing Crosby and many more) Where are the racist remarks in her radio shows Kate Smith Speaks (news commentary) or the Kate Smith Hour from 1937-1945, M-F tv variety show 1950-54 (#1 rated) and a Wednesday night prime time show in 1955. (Durn soapbox - I'm not a super Kate fan, just wary of over-reactions - thanks for posting this kinescope of Kay!!)
She's a marvelously unique creature
This is for the wisenheimers on here who said there were no more videos of Kay and the Williams Brothers. I just found one. It's titled "Kay Thompson Sings". They all sing "Eloise". Go find it and enjoy it. You're welcome.
I've only heard the term "wisenheimer" from one other source: Jackie Gleason as Ralph Kramden.
All 4 of the Williams brothers were so handsome. I'm drooling. 😍
Historic, thanks for posting.
Incredible clip, and a real gem. Thank you so much for posting!
Kay created the concert Judy Garland, the hand movements, the phrasing the whole style. You can see some of that here.
Kay was a genius at staging and live performance. She is the one who taught Judy Garland her half dozen famous gestures - the hand on the hip, the hand in her hair, and mroe. She also perfected Judy's concert performance voice.
Which Judy sometimes overdid, alas ...
@@TotzkeMike…. No. Judy Garland was the greatest entertainer ever. And if you don’t like her gestures or her body choreography then you don’t understand how a 4 foot 11 less than 100 pound woman could project a powerful voice as she did. It takes tremendous energy to vocalize as Judy Garland did. Imagine a major league pitcher winding up to throw a fastball. You don’t understand live performance. Alas ……
my god this is ENTERTAINMENT
Thank you for sharing this!!
Andy's last surviving brother, Don, died Jan. 6, 2023 in Branson, at age 100.
What a TREASURE! Thank you!
力強く表現力豊かで素晴らしい歌声!聞き惚れますな・・
She's kind of ... EXHAUSTING. ;-)
JIM CARUSO!!!! You are most welcome!!! I adore Cast Party at Birdland!!! You should check out my new club act at 54 Below May 15th!!!! Gonna do a few of Kay's numbers with my backup singers The Martha Rayes. It's right up your alley!!
Wow! I'd thought there was no video of them performing...this is really a major FIND!! THANK YOU for posting this!! Since Kate mentions this is their third performance on her show...should we hold out hope that there might be two other kinescopes yet to be found? FINGERS CROSSED!!! Wow!
Have you tried looking to the list on the left hand of this page, of related videos? I can see three right now.
It's really not that 'major' of a find, especially considering the "quality", but I'm sure we'll have to agree to disagree.
DDumbrille Read the whole thread, DDumb. If you're seeing three videos of Kay Thompson performing a complete number with The Williams Brothers from their cabaret act---then YOU are the one making great discoveries--as they are not visible to anyone else. Yes, there are several videos of Kay Thompson--but with the Williams Brothers? This is the only one--and I'm sure Kay would apologize that the quality is not up to your standards.
Gregory Moore Kay would be grateful that the quality isn't up to anyone's standards. She looks haggard enough as it is. But that comes with all the meth she was taking (the "feelgood" shots)…
But good point on videos w/or w/out the Williams Brothers.
Wow! She was tall!
Thank you. . .!
Wow! That's the vamp that turned Andy Williams into a man!
Lol how tall was she?
Andy is so young here...just 24
Judy Garland made one guest appearance on Andy's series. In some dialog, Andy mentioned that he had worked with her long ago at MGM: "I was very young." Judy: "I wasn't exactly Walter Brennan either."
Holy shit, straight from the Amazon.
She (?) looks like a giant.
OMG
Kaye Thompson was a great and important figure in film and live performance. But I just can’t take her. I respect the energy and the talent that she had but she’s simply not my cup of tea. But I can understand how other people do like her and admire her.
Ehh
certainly a 'handsome' lady
One of the weirdest things I've ever seen.
Agreed and Oy Vey!
Yeah...
