Great vid! My take away is that you can go just about anywhere with open diffs as you can with lockers. You just need wheel speed and momentum to carry you over obstacles. The issue is that you increase the likelihood of doing damaged to your rig. With lockers you can easily crawl right over just about anything as long as you have the clearance.
Great vid Steve, as always an amazing day out on the tracks with all the lads. Definitely easier to drive twin locked though wasn’t greasy like the last time we went up. I can definitely appreciate the added traction being twin locked though there comes a warning.....too much right boot will shift you in seconds and not necessarily in a forward movement as I discovered when my front bit and threw me into the bank. No matter what you drive guys n gals just get out there and enjoy the tracks and mateship of it all..👍👌🏽❤️😊
Holy cow!! The ‘Trol with just factory traction control was impressive ...nothing wrong with the LCs either, but the seductive roar of those Nissan V8s is what nirvana’s all about ❤️
Lockers perform consistently across makes and models. Traction Control performance is at the whim of the manufacturers. In my experience a number of manufacturers set up their Traction Control to cut in quickly; including Toyota and Land Rover. Some makes take a little more spinning before engaging TC; including Mitsubishi. Some makes don't seem to engage Traction Control until the wheel a spinning very quickly; including Isuzu. Your experience may differ, and you may prefer TC to cut in earlier or later. Just observing that lockers are more consistent.
Great video. I learnt so much from it. Dual locked you need to go slowly as : 1. You'll get wheel spin if you send it 2. It's hard to steer & easy to lose control if you go too fast. I must say it looks simply awesome the way it smoothly climbs rock steps. Traction control only: you need to know when it kicks in & keep your foot on the throttle until it does. You can't just walk it though, it needs more throttle. Locking the rear locker in the standard Patrol makes the front traction control worse.
I ordered my 200 series GXL on Friday, delivery end of march 2021. Looking at fitout options.. You've just sold me on twin lockers vs TC. Thanks for the video.
I don’t like relying on a system that NEEDS me to use the accelerator to activate it (TC). It’s the difference between being a driver and a passenger. My style of driving is definitely twin locked and crawling. Awesome example that backing off got it done. Good video.
Great comparison mate, personally I prefer diff locks but those with traction control are right amongst it 💪. Great driving all round there . I would have had to do that track on 2 or 3 wheels 😂😂
Might've been interesting to go down the slope and hear the thoughts on traction control vs rear lockers. Try front lockers down the hill with crud steering too. And then in the wet? I'll wait here. Cheers, good one.
The lockers make this terrain safe for the vehicle and for the terrain itself. TC may get you out, but the damage to the axles, vehicle sides and trail may be too much :-)
The traction control on my Nav needs a few seconds of low rpm spin to send the drive to the other wheel, in this vid it appears both guys with traction control seemed to hit the brakes before traction control had a chance to kick in as mate in the 2nd cruiser said.
Were you all running the same size tires and pressures? That should be the first thing you need to do introducing the video and conditions... Set the bar. Great video though guys!
We were all running very similar pressures. The 2 twin locked cars are almost 4t so it’s harder for us to go too low. It’s the best we could do as car these days can be setup so differently.
Great bud mate, so my takeaway is twin locked or nothing lol. TC is good and as long as you know how to drive a TC rig you will get places, but never as far as twin locked….
D T be nice🤭 in this case, probably, but it was entirely rock, so no quokkas were harmed. There is also the knowledge that lockers if left on when not needed also rip up the tracks, as do muddies, simexes, 37s etc etc. 🤫
are the 2 vehicles on the same tyres? i think TC ican out perform Lockers. I recently got a Mercedes ML w163 just to exprience the TC greenlaning in uk. and after a year, i got stock in the ML many times due to height and groundng the belly/fuel tank (flawed design Mercedes) the TC always found traction of road tyres. Now am up grading the tyres to 33" to get into more tough terriane and see what TC can do. Remeber the ML w163 was designed to replace the Gwagon and my theory is it would have be designed to work as good as the Gwagon if not better. lets see. Cheap factory brake pads is the locking mechanism so get the best brake pads for your car typre and the performance of TC will improve is the brakes dont slip under max power
TC can certainly outperform lockers, but it depends on the situation. Mud and slippery stuff for example. Lockers are the ultimate traction aid, especially fro rock crawling and really steep stuff where you want to go slow...
The person who disliked this video must just be butt hurt that he can’t get his wifes Pajero where these boys went in their Lc200’s and Y62’s hahahaha. Because why would you dislike this?
George Cvetkovic is wider really better than narrow? Never really got a straight answer from some people I’ve asked, only thing I’ve seen to know is that it depends on the terrain. Wide and narrow have their place
Hema Nigansz I always thought thin and narrow in mud like the old 76 series split rims back in the day were supposed to get through to the hard ground in muddy conditions.....sand and rock definitely wider....mud I really don’t know, but most guys running treps etc swear by wider..
The problem with traction control is if you even look at touching that brake the bugger disconnects and there’s a pause between letting the break off and the traction control taking over again. If you want diff locks buy a car with the genuine item installed from the factory ie landcruiser 70 series or similar but avoid installing ARB chineseium shit at all costs... speaking from experience and yes the bolts are Aussie made but the rest of its Chinese hence they can say it’s Aussie built
George Cvetkovic Harrow and Tjm both had good reviews and the electric systems the way to go. You won’t suffer seals leaking and pressurised diffs that blow oil everywhere. I ended up selling my hilux after 8 ARB diff failures and on several times I wasn’t even in 4wd and neither was the lockers activated. They just dropped the bolts and blew the rear diff housing apart. I just lost confidence in the cars ability to even make it to the shops
Just a question mate been watching your channel for a long time and subscribed. You just keep teasing me with your 200 I've been on the fence for ages. I have a 2013 Ranger with quite a bit of work done really still enjoy driving it but the V8 grunt just keeps poking me. What's your thoughts on keeping or replacing. Last bit so far the Ranger has gone everywhere some bigger trucks have gone.
The ranger would have the economy bonus. It would use heaps less fuel but no where near as much punch off the line. For me it comes down to interior comfort. The 200 has heaps of room ( I’m 6,3 ) and is just a dream to drive. Take one for a test drive and let me know what Colour you pick 😝😂😂
Great vid! My take away is that you can go just about anywhere with open diffs as you can with lockers. You just need wheel speed and momentum to carry you over obstacles. That’s exactly the point of lockers. Slower is better to reduce the risk of damage to something.

Those V8s do sound amazing don’t they

Pretty much spot on. Glad you liked it

Thanks for the video.
No dramas at all buddy.
Lockers for the win I say.
I don’t like relying on a system that NEEDS me to use the accelerator to activate it (TC). It’s the difference between being a driver and a passenger. My style of driving is definitely twin locked and crawling. Awesome example that backing off got it done. Good video.
I’ve always had twin locked 4WDS so it was always ganna happen with the 200
Great fun watching this comparison unfold.... well done as always bro !!
Trip video to come 😝. That’s ganna be epic.
Australian 4x4 Adventures can’t wait to watch yours and edit mine 😍😍😍😍
Great comparison mate, personally I prefer diff locks but those with traction control are right amongst it 💪. Great driving all round there .
I would have had to do that track on 2 or 3 wheels 😂😂
😂. You’d be lucky to have 1 wheel on the ground 😂
Australian 4x4 Adventures yeah probably 😂😂
Might've been interesting to go down the slope and hear the thoughts on traction control vs rear lockers. Try front lockers down the hill with crud steering too. And then in the wet? I'll wait here. Cheers, good one.
In the trip video we do a few more tracks up and down so it shows a bit of that.
That videos a few weeks off.
The lockers make this terrain safe for the vehicle and for the terrain itself. TC may get you out, but the damage to the axles, vehicle sides and trail may be too much :-)
I’m very much a fan of lockers.
Great video mate. Good to see everyone having a great time out on the Rocky track.
It was a great day out. We had 9 cars with us so still plenty more action to come in the trip video. We done a few harder tracks too.
Dash knows best. Awesome work Champ, looking forward to the next clip
Owwwee. I’m not sure I can admit Dash is right about anything 😂
Great vid mate. Was a top day out. Great tracks and great mates.
Thanks mate. Was great to have you included in the fun

Yeah I think you’re right. It comes down to driver confidence I think.
So have you had any problems with cv joints with a lift and a front locker? Along those lines, any diff drop or upgraded cvs?
Nah no dramas with CVS or anything.
No diff drop or upgraded CVS
Excellent. You’ve gotta love lockers for climbing up slippery uneven ground.
Must say that I’m disappointed with the lack of Toyota and Nissan guys yelling at each other in these comments.
Were you all running the same size tires and pressures?
That should be the first thing you need to do introducing the video and conditions... Set the bar.

Pretty much sums it up yep 😂
Goodnight! Can you tell me the size and name of the tires on the Nissan patrol? What is the size of the disk and what is its departure?
Great clip Steve I love TC in my 200 but one lockers will get in there lol. Cheers Steve
You’ll love it. They drive so much better with a locker or 2 😜
Traction control just rips up the tracks even more (in most cases).
I do tend to agree. It relies on wheel spin to work.
More than what? Single spinners🤦♂️
Ray Hart compared to lockers ya flog!
Ray Hart what DT said.
D T be nice🤭 in this case, probably, but it was entirely rock, so no quokkas were harmed. There is also the knowledge that lockers if left on when not needed also rip up the tracks, as do muddies, simexes, 37s etc etc. 🤫
Would have loved to see the 200 go up with centre diff lock on!
😂. Bloody Ray had one chance to prove himself for the brand and he stuffed it up 🤣
Great video, what type of lockers do you have?
I have ARB air lockers in mine.
I’ve had E lockers before a well. Both are great things.
I’m running an elocker

It’s all explained in the video about tyre size.
TC can certainly outperform lockers, but it depends on the situation. Mud and slippery stuff for example. Lockers are the ultimate traction aid, especially fro rock crawling and really steep stuff where you want to go slow...
Ray Hart ohhhhhh no Ray you didn’t did you? 🤦🏻 lucky I’ve got both 😂🤘🏽
The person who disliked this video must just be butt hurt that he can’t get his wifes Pajero where these boys went in their Lc200’s and Y62’s hahahaha. Because why would you dislike this?
😂. This comment made me laugh sooo hard. Bloody love it buddy.
Your ganna get a share on my insta page too for being a legend.
Australian 4x4 Adventures 😂😂😂 Thanks man. Love your vids keep em up. I have a LC200 like yours just with a little less mods hahaha.
Well get modding 😂
DaSpedza MotoVlogs nothing wrong with some “butthurt” ask Steve..🤭😭😜👌🏽❤️👍
DaSpedza MotoVlogs what’s wrong with Pajero? Explain yourself
Interesting real life comparro. Cheers!
Thanks for watching!
Steve is this for my benefit 😜😜😜
Always for my benefit 😂
Which camera and lenses do you use to film it ? 😃
My main camera is a canon 80D with a sigma 10-20mm lens.
Does the tc have to be turned off to use lockers or does the lockers over ride it?
Lockers override it.
So which is better, wide or narrow tires? Tall or short(like stock size)?
I’m a fan of wide tyres as it’s more tread on the ground. But that’s just my personal preference
Definitely wider
George Cvetkovic is wider really better than narrow? Never really got a straight answer from some people I’ve asked, only thing I’ve seen to know is that it depends on the terrain. Wide and narrow have their place

Where exactly is Rocky Track , I used to live at Labertouche is it the one I think it is ?
It’s in Toolangi state forest.
@@Australian4x4Adventures ok different Rocky Tk then
Might be rocky ridge track labertouche your thinking off
Looks like an interesting track 👌
You’d drive it. It’s only 30 mins from my place so let me know when ya wanna give it a go.
I’ll get my diff sorted and I’ll let you know when I’m headed down that way 👌
I'd give it a shot... FJC A-TRAC w/ rear locker.
I won't even use the locker
In the dry I’d say you’d be fine. It’s not a crazy hard track so no reason why you shouldn’t drive it with the right line.
@@Australian4x4Adventures I'm a Colorado boy, so sprinkle that shit with some snow, and lets do this... On a side note, I love your LC.
Curious, what did you drop your tyres to?
I think it was 18psi on that day
Nissan Patrol all day everyday!
Here’s a smart man lol ❤️👌🏽🦾👍
Great video loved it
Thanks buddy. 🙏
Nice one Steve
I’m pretty happy with this one. 😁😁
@@Australian4x4Adventures Steve- you have done heaps of mods over the last year or so. Any chance of an update on the 200 coming up?
It’s on my list of videos I wanna do. I’ve got a few things in the pipe line of what I wanna get done / finish off before I film it.
Auto trans verses manual .?
Well all of these were auto.
I’m 100% on the auto is better in the bush for 95% of situations

I ended up going with the elocker from Harrop on the front and will be getting an override switch for the rear as it comes with a factory rear locker.

Hopefully he stops putting #nolockers. Fucking embarrassing having to bounce the 200 up there like that.
🤣. Yeah he had to work to get it up that’s for sure.
@@Australian4x4Adventures hahaha
Lockers will always give you more control, and less chance of breaking something
Exactly.
Traction control makes the car look like an epileptic
😂. This is true but it does work nicely
🤪 we all started somewhere 👍
Steve, what lockers are you running?
I’ve got ARB air lockers in mine
First. Wining!!! 😁
