Hello maika, i got depressed in this month. And i know that i need to seek treatment. But before that i started to read some self help books which are based on CBT. And after reading that i got a relief. As i was depressed early i also had started to think everything is hopeless. But after reading this book i got some hopes in life. But mam today i got hopeless again after realise one thing. which is, a person with serve cancer is dying because he/she has no hope. also there are so many cases were people is hopeless. So mam everyone in this world including that author of that book says that there is hope. But mam, above mentioned things are hopeless then how can there will be hope ? And what would say to a person who is dying from cancer if he/she has no chance of survival?

Hi Wil, I'm sorry to hear you're going through challenges. It's great you're looking for support. There are certainly situations in life in which the result a person is hoping for is very unlikely, and it could be called hopeless. The thing about depression is that it makes it seem like everything, or almost everything is hopeless, it makes it seem like situations are hopeless that are actually *very* hopeful. Depression makes it seem like there's no hope for ever feeling better, but actually, there is lots of hope when it comes to recovering from depression. The question is not so much "Is there hope?" or "Is there no hope?", the question is, "How much hope is where?" and with depression, we drasticallly underestimate the real hope that is there. When someone suffers from depression, there is a lot of hope for recovering, that is why this point is often emphasized in self-help books about depression.
Regarding the person dying from cancer - it is very individual what to say in these types of situations. Sometimes, it is best not to say anything, but to be there and offer empathy and support. I have once heard a professional working with people who are dying say, he asks them three questions: "What are you going through right now?" "What's important to you now?" and "How can I help you?"
I hope this helps and wish you all the best!
