I replaced the original Cooper Besemer engine in one of these with a Cat D399 V16. A few years later i did a major overhaul on a BE 450 W including replacing the engine with the same D399 Cat. Many other parts were replaced. The main hoist/drag drums bearings were linebored. Recut the rear drum gear and made a fat pinion to suit including the cutter to cut it. New set of swing gears. Put a new OHT crane in one that would reach all gearboxes. Then some idiot account says they were costing too much and then.......they put a torch through them both.
May the gods curse those bean counters. There's a lot of value in your work that doesn't show up on the books; not to mention the improved utility of the asset. Makes me think of the criminal act of when Big Muskie and the Silver Spade were cut up, rather than preserving them in place as museum pieces.
