    Robyn shares her personal story and how it inspired her current path as a "Real Food" evangelist. Grounded in a successful Wall Street career that was more interested in food as good business than good-for-you, this mother of four was shaken awake by the dangerous allergic reaction of one of her children to a "typical" breakfast. Her mission to unearth the cause revealed more about the food industry than she could stomach, and impelled her to share her findings with others. Informative and inspiring.
    About this speaker
    Robyn authored "The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick and What We Can Do About It." A former Wall Street food industry analyst, Robyn brings insight, compassion and detailed analysis to her research into the impact that the global food system is having on the health of our children. She founded allergykidsfoundation.org and was named by Forbes as one of "20 Inspiring Women to Follow on Twitter." The New York Times has passionately described her as "Food's Erin Brockovich."

    Before we released our speaker's names, we featured a series of Speaker Teasers. Here, Robyn's:
    Real food, is that too much to ask;
    Big industry, I take to task;
    It's time that we reclaim our plates;
    from food forced into altered states.

    I am so grateful for what Robyn is doing in spreading this information about our foods! In the past year, following a second bout with cancer, I have spent hundreds of hours studying much of what she talks about here. I've made dramatic changes in what I put into my body, and I have not felt this good for many, many years. I truly believe that people could be so much healthier if they made only a few changes. I yearn for some of my family and friends to learn even some the basics in healthier eating...but I tread lightly because no one likes to hear 'fanatical ideas'. Keep talking, Robyn!

    Such a brave and concerned warrior-mother with a huge amount of common sense and guts, presenting her story from experience. Wow, what an advocate for a healthy way of life, restoring autonomy in our diets, our guts! I'm a nutritionist since 1973 and gladly cheer Robyn in promoting the choice of Real Food, which, to me, means clean home grown or organic food.

      Yes even the same companies like McDonalds have so.different ingredients in other.countries.
      For example in my country, McD's french fries are made of 3 ingredients: potatoes, Rapeseedoil and salt.. When I looked at the ingredient list in the States, I was baffled. So many additives everywhere.. Not only the additives, the pesticides, gmo, how they feed the animals (antibiotics) etc... Meat is not equal meat in different places.. Salad not equal salad etc. It's crazy to have to look for these things but it's so.worth it for health

      @lindacreates I suggest fresh raw milk from a trustworthy organic farmer. It's good to keep them in a freezer for an hour for killing stuff without destroying the good things. In the industry, they heat it up to kill bad bacteria to pasteurise milk, but with it nutrients also get destroyed and especially enzymes that heal the gut and help break down the milk. That's why lactose intolerant people can often tolerate raw milk.
      But because it is so nutrient dense, it has to be implemented slowly. But I found it very worth it because of all the vitamins, enzymes etc you'll get..
      But unfortunately in a lot of countries it is prohibited.

    This is such an important TEDx! I have been saying this since the early 2000's without any research behind me, but just a mom and health care professional feeling. I had been ridiculed by a few close friends and family members as being a gravel chewing tree hugger and told that there was nothing wrong with our country or food supply. I kept it to myself, mostly buying organic, but sometime pretending not to care. Yes a minimum of $1200 to feed a family of 3 with organic vegies and meats, etc IS EXPENSIVE - but so worth it!! I am so glad that Robyn took the time and energy! Thank You!!

    Liberal attitude toward GMOs? We've been using gene modification to create things like Corn, Tomatoes and Bananas for years. While people think of "organic" cultivation techniques as natural and safe, there are important points we might consider. Most of the plants used today have only been developed genetically in the last 100 years, and even "heirloom" varieties were bred relatively recently. There have been no long term studies, and plants certainly are known to produce a wide suite of toxic compounds.
    There is a difference between causation and correlation. There is a relationship between some diets and disease but to completely conclude that GMO crops cause the majority of allergies, asthma, obesity and other diseases is a stretch.There is simply no legitimate causal relationship between biotechnology and human disease or disorders.

    I have a hard time respecting GMO advocates given they disrespect everyone else by ridiculing and denying the right to choose.
    GMO supporters oppose labelling because they're afraid people will see the label as a warning and avoid the product. However without labelling you cannot choose whether to put this stuff in your body or not. So if we discover a couple of decades down the line the current generation of GMO products are not safe, tough, because you were denied the right to make that choice.
    You cannot respect that.

    • @updlate4756
      @updlate4756 9 лет назад +4

      AnnoyedDragon Foods labelled organic and certified non-GMO both give consumers a choice. If you want more non-GMO food, then demand it (at a higher price of course) and companies/farmers will provide it. It really is that simple. Have you not seen Whole Food Markets popping up everywhere lately? None in your area? Well you have the right to travel further to get your groceries, the right to order on Amazon, and the right to move. --- GMO labeling isn't a warning sign? Then what is it? You just said you want labels to give people the right to choose. Does that not, in of itself, represent a warning to those that *believe* GMOs are bad for their health? It's used to warn people away from the product. What other purpose does it serve? Why else would they not purchase a product labelled GMO if they didn't believe it was toxic? --- It's actually pretty simple to get a list of GMO crops online. Get the list, then assume any produce from that list that isn't labelled organic/certified non-gmo is a GMO. Simple. ----Oh, and you keep saying "Right". You mean like people having the right to vote on it? Last I checked, the vote to label products as GMO in California failed. Seems the majority of people in Cali don't agree with you.

    This was a winding tale of misdirection. We never learn what her child was allergic to, so we never learn whether it's even remotely possible that a GMO caused the allergy. I have to assume that's because the food she was allergic to was not derived from a GMO.
    Allergies are on the rise across the world in first-world countries. So, big fail on linking that to our food supply in the U.S.
    Pointing specifically to milk as the cause of high cancer rates in the U.S. seems odd, given how very many more carcinogenic substances we allow in our air, water, furniture, household items and chemicals, cleaners, pesticides - you name it - than other countries do. Any one or combination of those are just as likely to be responsible.
    Then she disingenuously points out how much we spend on healthcare. Which is because our healthcare is dramatically more expensive than it is in nearly any other country, not because we are sicker.
    And concludes with some sort of pep talk. I am not impressed, and she has provided evidence for nothing, much less proof.

    • @DonnaFernstrom
      @DonnaFernstrom 8 лет назад +4

      +tiraandaz It has nothing to do with the food. The best theory - the one that both makes sense and is borne out by the evidence - is that allergies are a response by an underworked immune system. You see, first world countries have pretty much eliminated virtually all human parasites. The part of the immune system responsible for allergies is the same part that fights parasite infections.
      Basically, an allergy is our own immune system tilting at windmills because it's bored. There's been some success treating allergies and related autoimmune issues by deliberately ingesting parasites. Like I said, it's borne out by the evidence.
      Our species didn't evolve in a vacuum, and when you put it into one, unexpected and not always great things happen.
      You rarely ever find people with allergies in third world countries - no matter what they eat - because they typically have parasite exposure.

      @TheMysticHours 9 лет назад +23

      Yes... Monsanto was required by the FDA to do their own studies... and you believe that Monsanto is going to pay to have a study done that will demonstrate that their products are NOT safe? If they did, I'm sure they would change the parameters of the study so that it turned out in their favor. It's the classic "Fox guarding the hen house" practice that our government does so well. When will people wake up to see that we've become a corporatocracy - government for the corporations by the corporations?
      None of these studies can measure the long term effects either. A lot of this is just common sense. You don't need to be a chemist to understand that it can't be good to ingest a plant like corn that has pesticide woven into it's DNA. Correlation is not causation, but how much more correlated evidence do you need to see (highest cancer rates, spend the most on sick care, bees disappearing, etc.), along with animal studies that show GMO's causing cancer, before you think it might not be a good idea to feed this FrankenFood to our children, and maybe we should pump the brakes until we know?

    This gal has delivered one of the finest presentations I have yet seen on TED, and that is saying something. She really cares about this problem, she has done some homework, and she is laying it out there for folks to take a look. Until the common folks of America wake up to what is going on, we will continue to be plagued with health problems. Each of us has to take responsibility for ourselves, swimming upstream, because the authorities have sold us out, unfortunately.

    It makes me sad that this problem will be solved so slowly due to the overwhelming amount of people that will take the easy road out and say "gee that sucks, well hopefully I dont get sick" and then go on their same shopping trip and not make any changes because it's just easier. I definately will be sharing this video with a lot of people and also start at least thinking more about what I consume and support.

    My youngest child developed an egg allergy as a baby (I never fed him ANY eggs- they are added to lots of baby food) that caused him to stop growing (for almost a year). His immune system attacked his esophogus! This is a NEW thing. Food allergies were rare when we were growing up. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to buy ALL organic, but I buy what I can. Also, I don't make my kids drink milk. Milk is the perfect food for baby cows. Bravo Robyn!

    The Pusztai experiment was in 1998, 14 years ago. His own institute audited the work and found that the data were insufficient. When sent to the Lancet, some reviewers did not agree that the data merited publication. Still, the journal published it, mostly to stimulate discussion of this issue. The discussion showed that Pusztai's work was not repeatable. No other labs reported similar findings. None since. I'm glad you are looking!

    @rbmunkin Wat a well thought out argument! Ofcourse, that there are hundreds of studies that show that they are perfectly safe doesn't matter. After all, your gut feeling show that they are safe. And your gut feeling trumps everything, we should all bow down to it.

    Brilliant! thanks so much for bringing out all these issues, from feeding Frankenfoods to our kids, to escalating health care costs related to consuming them, & the food industry making us sick with GMOs, pesticides, & other chemicals that other countries won't touch. The human body simply can't assimilate or detoxify these poisons, and we are seeing the results. Much of what I treat in my practice are man-made conditions. Thanks for your insight, perseverance, & beautiful delivery!

    Currently, the big issue of food shortage isn't production, but the distribution infrastructure. A lot of it has to do with technology, but also that it's prohibitively expensive. The food that is grown excessively in some parts of the world is unable to make it to other parts of the world in time and in an economically feasible way. Unfortunately, many countries lack the technology, climate, or political will to enact changes in agriculture.

    I highly recommend her book 'The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food is Making us Sick and What we can do about it'. It's very detailed and provides unsettling news especially for those unaware of the politics of food regulation, the FDA - Monsanta connection, genetic engineering, etc. She is by no means a 'radical' person but simply found disturbing facts.

    • @rtwhite1546
      @rtwhite1546 9 лет назад

      TED just organizes speakers to do talks, they don't necessarily endorse the messages. Then TEDx conferences aren't entirely affiliated with TED proper, they're independent conferences that of course follow certain rules in order to use the name.

    • @oceanceaser44
      @oceanceaser44 9 лет назад

      rtwhite1546 I see, so I guess this one isn't as hard to speak at compared to a proper ted event. I guess I shouldn't be trusting big claims that a lot of ted speakers make on face value anyways, even if they are legitimate.

    • @rtwhite1546
      @rtwhite1546 9 лет назад +1

      It's true, but yes, that's a good policy for listening to anyone speak!

    • @updlate4756
      @updlate4756 9 лет назад +1

      People will see "TED" and assume the speaker has been thoroughly vetted and their points have been thoroughly researched. Sorry, but it's blatantly obvious that this speaker did very little research, selectively decided which data fit her needs, and formed her conclusion based on that. It's also blatantly obvious that the most she can prove with this data is correlation. She doesn't mention that kids started spending more time indoors, outside of nature. She didn't mention overall changes in diet and exercise, not just the introduction of GMOs. For instance, the introduction of roasted peanuts, (roasting increases the strength of the allergen), into more of our foods, and the fact that kids were beginning to eat more peanuts at earlier ages before their immune systems had fully developed. She doesn't mention that our medical system has improved, and it's possible that the same number of children have peanut allergies as before, they're just now being properly diagnosed. She didn't mention that during the period she analyzed, the economy improved significantly, thereby giving more people access to healthcare, in order to get diagnosed / treated for allergic reactions.
      I'm sure I could come up lots of other things that 'possibly' created the spike in allergies.
      But why mention all of the other points that could possibly contradict her narrative? Must be those pesky GMOs!

  • @esthercise
    @esthercise 9 лет назад +1

    I agree totally with organic foods. However, I find it difficult to say that food was the only cause for the allergic reaction. Especially since all 4 kids were fed the same food, and only 1 had an allergic reaction. My youngest son is the only one in our family who has allergies, and we all eat the same food. There must be another culprit.

    • @lynnettegarcia8125
      @lynnettegarcia8125 9 лет назад +4

      Actually Esther you answered your own question, it was the food because it was an allergic reaction of the food for the one child and it doesn't mean that the 'food' is safe for the rest it simply means the one is more sensitive than the others, a person can also have an allergic reaction to natural foods, strawberries, peanuts and shellfish are now fairly common 'real foods' sensitivities.

    • @mikesam330
      @mikesam330 9 лет назад +2

      or some immune systems and genetics are just more naturally resistant to the poisons in GMOs

To those who wrote comments about the inaccuracy on a few details of what this lady said, I have one thing to say: get real and admit that our planet is getting dirtier and dirtier and sicker and sicker! Maybe it is time to get educated and support ourselves better instead of sabotaging this individual's attempt to help us and our children and our world!!!!

    Love the information. Now sincerely what should be be doing. I feel as if I switch my family to a different milk that that may have something in it as well. I know must contact our State Representatives.. done, but where can we shop safe. Is Whole Foods safe? Or any others? I can grow a garden but not a house a cow. I truly want to know what to do to protect my family from laziness or greed of our political and food non monitoring system
