- What does it mean to be Black and gay in the UK? Back in 2010, GMFA explored the life experiences of a group of men who all too often have been rendered invisible in history and stigmatised by their own communities because of their sexuality and race.
Focusing on a range of Black gay men of different ages and cultural backgrounds, Beyond Labels looks at how racism and homophobia can impact upon the construction of a healthy Black and gay identity.
Featuring Theodore Brown, Vernal Scott, Christian Neckles, Dejay Scott and John Noel Gylnn.
Produced by GMFA - the gay men's health project. Filmed by Jaime Sylla. Funded by Big Lottery.
Thank you to all 5 of you for this wonderful documentary, very much enjoyed by this 57 year old white gay male. I abhor any, and every form of racism. Each of you gave a real insight into your own personalities, individual views and experiences. By the end of this programme, I feel that we, as viewers were already getting to know each of you. To be able to do that in such a comparatively short time-frame is quite some doing. I hope life is being kind to you all x
this makes me sad
This is an amazing documentary. The men featured are great representation of black gay men, I hope this documentary has reached broadcast television, if not it definately needs to! Well done to all involved!! :-)
i feel so sorry for them because of the lgbtq culture
Really good to listen to these guys talk about their experience and lives
this is not about sex. it's about mistaken idenity
Their homophobia hasn't extinguished gay life. In fact, the opposite is occurring. I suspect that there is an inverse relationship between homophobia and the occurrence of gayness in the community. The more they fight against gay life, the stronger gay awareness becomes. I suspect also that when this pandemic is over and all the dust has been cleared away that the occurrence of gay life in the black community will be stronger than ever.
the gay community is a strong supportive community
I am proud to be gay. I am Latino and face the same issue in the USA. But I always say fuck whatever others think. I am who I am and proud of who I am and that’s what matters. The rest of society isn’t going to pay my bills to care about them at all.🤗
it's important nott to care what people think but find help to deal with your concerns
@@mygaygenes Thank you. You are right.
ABSOLUTELY 💯 PERCENT CORRECT AGREED
I enjoyed this a lot ❤️❤️❤️
The black community understands the most about this.
This is coming from a straight, white guy from the US. I've seen first hand the stress this struggle has put on my friends of all ethnic backgrounds, but especially people of color. Fwiw, I can promise any of you going through it that any friend worth keeping probably already senses you're struggling, won't bat at a lash when you tell them, and will never not be your buddy.
how do we help this misunderstanding?
Such lovely guys.. all of them.
Exceptional documentary 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🌈love is love🌈
it's important to hear their stories
Cool vid 💙
Fascinating film, but also I’m sure that’s the university I went to! Bucks New University?
Thank you for sharing this video, and for the individuals featured for sharing their lives with us. Very much appreciated. By the way, the young gentleman with the scarf around his neck is so very attractive. I'd love to meet him!!
to be gay is not about sex
@@mygaygenes agreed.
@@mygaygenes....
Everything is about sex ....apart from sex, thats usually about something else
Beautiful people with lovely positive attitudes. Guys I could idolise ❤️
lovely, good, important
Well said.
Excellent!
their stories need to be heard to identify the major issues
On point. Very similar to America, if not identical.
exactly
The link between homophobia and our patriarchal society is bang on .
So many of our overt boundaries customs and taboos are delineated by the history of supposed male primacy and control of power .
Its about time the patriarcal paradigm was examined , much of it is redundant and poisons society .
The problem we have is men and boys feel their dominance is implicit and unquestionable, even ceding a tiny bit of agency to others outside the almost totally dominant paternal ubiquity feels to them like their world is coming apart around them .
Many males see any attempt by women ,for example, to share a small amount of the rights and responsibilities inherent in our society as an out and out assault on them , and they scatter shouting 'to the barricades !'
This program has some great contributors, many thanks to all involved .
Not surprised by the racist issues in the uk
ALL OF THEM HAVE THE SAME OR SIMILAR EXPERIENCES AS OTHER PEOPLE IVE HEARD AND EVEN MYSELF.
all their stories are similar because the problem is similar
Black gay men do it better in my opinion. 👍🏻
Of course! Peace.

unresolved shame has caused this type of misunderstanding and identity problems. perhaps parenting support before parenting could help parents raise children to be their born gender
That's worst a label!!!!!!!!!!!!
👍❤❤❤❤❤❤
Where I am in the uk, I dnt think anyone cares that your black and gay, your part of our community
the community is strong
Números:23
[19] "Elohim no es un humano que miente ni como un hijo de hombre para ser amenazado. ¿Dirá El y no lo hará? ¿Hablará El y no cumplirá Su palabra?
If you are lgbtq, black and especially a woman in combination, you will get hired hands down even if you don't have any knowledge or experience on the job.
Where, I need a better job and would love to live in that place? I actually have a degree and some job experience. When I get there I would apply for a CEO position.
Stats do not support this. Our society won't support straight successful Black men and women. Especially if they are over achievers. This is why most of our Black successful people are gay because it is more accepted to be than to be a role model successful straight Black "rock star".
these are our talented 10% who have been labeled and have accepted the label. these guys are meant to be best buddies with wives and children. 7:45 your mother was responding to the death of her son as she knows him.
Can't stand label!!!!!!
