The Scream by Edvard Munch Step by Step Acrylic Painting on Canvas for Beginners

- Опубликовано: 10 окт 2016
- In this video, we're gonna get together and learn how to paint Edvard Munch's The Scream. We'll be using matte medium to improve blending, and we're going to spend a bit of time playing with shadows and highlights on his face. We'll also be spending a little bit of time talking about the composition of this painting.
This lesson is probably slightly more intermediate than some of my others. But I try to break it down simple enough that the absolute beginner can feel comfortable trying!

I’m painting on a 12x16-inch stretched canvas, but you can paint on any type and size of canvas you like.
I used:
• A 1-inch flat brush
• A 1/2-inch angle brush
• 1/4-inch flat brush
• Slightly smaller flat brush
• A small detail/liner brush
• A piece of chalk
I’m using Liquitex Basics acrylic paint in the following colors:
• Raw Seinna
• Cadmium Orange Hue
• Primary Yellow
• Titanium White
• Burnt Umber
• Cerulean Blue
• Mars Black
But you can use any colors you like.

So glad I found this! This painting is right up my alley! Will definitely try this one! Thank you!!!
The Scream is one of my favorite paintings. And my resent obsession. I love how you showed us the way the painting flows to focus on the Scream. It just clicked when u said that! And best of all how you remind us to loosen up, no need for straight lines (ruler). I always need the reminder that there is more than one way to do things and that each painting you do looks different no matter how many times you do it and that's ok!! Wonderful tutorial Jane and much appreciated!!!
Thank you!!! I'm so glad you liked it and that the straight lines reminder was helpful for you. Sometimes I think we get too wrapped up in perfection and little details. I know I do sometimes. I need those reminders from time to time too :)
You know I really didn't understand the painting until I watched your video. I just thought it was a scary man. But I think now I can relate and I will give it a go. Thanks Jane 😍😍
Aaaaw, thank you, Cathy. Yes, this was a very emotional self-portrait that Munch did. I think we've all felt this way at one point or another
Wow... I was following along well until I became AMAZED with your painting of the Scream itself. WOW. I am going to watch that part about 5 times before I try painting that part. I have paused my painting for now. Looks like a good place to stop and then come back on the Scream. WOW - you are amazing.
Aaaw, thank you so much!! I'm so glad you're enjoying it! I can't wait to see what you do :D
amazing!!!!!!!!!!! I like look how you are painting. I am little bit old lady living in the black forest , so my english is what i learned long time ago and i can not understand all you say , but that 's no problem. I am painting about 10 years because bring colours on the canvas enjoi my day.Happy that i found you. Thanks for super super videos.

Magnificent lesson. Thank you.
Thanks SO much Jane. I have always loved "The Scream". I will be doing this one and SCREAMING the whole time while I deal with those rails. lol I have more problems with a straight line. It is like...I go real well at the start of the line...then I think about it and off it goes in another direction. LOL Maybe I will get my back scratcher (mahl/maul stick) out to balance my hand for the mid part of the rails. I LOVE this version. The colors are beautiful. :D Biggest ART Hugs.
Thank you so much, dear Susan
And they certainly won't be straight. lol I will just perceive that... as bent rails...work well with someone who is screaming? LOL Well I try. :D
Susan Bishop Heck yeah! And it's an old, wonky bridge :)

It's really interesting to see this video. As I'm from Norway, this is a painting we painted as kids in school. I never liked painting in school because I never felt I could be good at it, but this painting is actually one that I remember I liked painting. :-) But it's fun to see the way you do it, and maybe I'll even try this again someday and compare it since I now actually like painting.
And if you are ever in Norway, you should definitely go see the different variations of the painting.
Thank you, Elisabeth! I hope you do decide to try it :D And Norway, aaaah... How I would LOVE to visit Norway!!
Maybe I will try it!:) And you should definitely visit Norway too. And winter or summer, maybe travel north and see either the northern lights or the midnight sun, or west/Southwest and see our old town in Stavanger or Bryggen in Bergen. Both of which I would like to try to paint some day... :)
Elisabeth A. V. Yes!!

Just one downfall... I am responsible for the study last period. Actually I share a lot of your videos and ideas with my students. STEM education is really important, but humanities are just as important. You are a terrific teacher. I really love your work, but your teaching style is inspirational. Please consider teaching as a profession!
AnneMarie Donahue Oh my gosh, thank you SO much, AnneMarie! I'm honored, and what a wonderful thing you do
I agree, you are a awesome teacher. I watch your videos while I am at work longing for the weekend so I can paint. I have complete confidence that I will be able to follow your directions. I like that you explain & show examples of what you are explaining. I also like that you don't get chatty or off subject. I am so glad that I have found your channel. I hope that you have a Merry Christmas and 2017 is even better than the previous! :)
Clarissa Agerton Thank you so much, Clarissa!!

Hello Jane! You help me forfilling one dream of painting "The Screem".With your help I hope I can Do it very well. Thank you for this and all the others. I learn auf lot from you and you are a very good painting teacher! Tomorrow I am painting this picture With your guidance. I am from Germany and I only paint with your channel and for Landscapes with Allison
Prior! I have a little problem, my Englisch is in painting words Not so good, so could you please speak a little slowlier, so I can follow you better! That would be very nice from you! Thanx for helping me forfilling one of my dreams in painting! Go on then you are the Best! Love from Germany

Painting with Jane My Screem turned out actually really well. I am so proud of it, but I still will prabably make some little changes, so I am totally proud of My Screem. Sometimes I have some problems to understand what kind of brushes to use. I understand it first when you are mixing the colours. That brings me a lot of stress. The only brush I understand is the Flatbrush. Maybe you can help me with that. Before I am painting with you I am prepairing everything for the painting. But it is hard with the brushes and the different sizes. Maybe that helps you, because I am sure you have another painters from Germany and they are painting with you! Thank you for your Videos! Greetings from Germany
The saying "there's more than one way to skin a cat"? - I enjoyed watching your creative process & your version. I've done it once, I love the storyline on the piece, just not my gig. I'll share the one I did do though. it was at the time when terrorism was quite active. Thanks Jane. ♡
Thank you, Sue
Sue I'm going to look for yours in the group page!

Great painting 👻
Thank you so much, Katherine!!
great...thanks
Wow Jane,
You did an absolutely amazing job of recapturing The Scream. You really inspired me to try to paint this when I can. While it looks almost exactly the same as the original you managed to put your touch on it. Your words of encouragement and instruction mean so much and go a long way to inspire us. Thanks so much for sharing this with us Jane.
Kathy B. (fairylady0227)
Aw, Kathy, thank you so much
What if I don't have the matte medium 🙁this is one of my favorite paintings I just want to get it right, should I wait to buy the matte medium?
Sassy Jane!
Hehe, thank you, Theresa!
You are welcome.
you are creative
Thank you :)
haha waxed eyebrows! love the painting :) xo
Hehe, thank you, Ria :D
so glad i got (get?) to know you!!! :) xo
Ria Kooijman Me too, friend
Woaaww❤️
Thank you, Hazal!!
Is the matte medium the same as Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid Gloss? I have some of the gloss on hand from a prior painting, should I use that or wait and buy some matte medium?
I'm not sure. I've never used that one. Give it a try and see if it helps you with blending without making the colors too transparent. Let me know how it goes!
I loved the painting and can't wait to Google Edvard Munch and read up on him. I was wondering if you were testing out the paint brushes? I saw I think the angle and it was the color of the sample ones.
Thank you, Sherrill!! Yep, those are some of my detail samples :D
loveeeeeee ❤️😘
Thank you, Kanwal!!
wow
GREAT video. =)
Thank you, Lola!!!
Jane, if I were two paint this on two canvases (one picture) is there a secret to holding the canvases together while painting? thanks in advance
Lola Gonzalez Either clamp them together in your easel (if it does that), or you could paint on a flat surface. If you're painting on stretched canvases, you could try some C-clamps to hold them together too. I would love to see this on two canvases!!!
I'd love to see it 2 (on two lol)
JANE IF IS POSSIBLE to do Seattle sky night lights a Wil so awesome to see that thank you you are a awesome artis
👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Jane, what kind of canvas do you use for this painting?
Jane.. Big challenge started counting from... now!!!! lol This is going to be my first attempt on canvas. Why did i chose the scream? Because this will express how i feel while i am trying to find the colors lol (I hope i won' t be afraid and i' ll finish it)
LOL, Ria!!! You've got this, friend! If you can't find those colors, I challenge you to pick totally different colors and see what happens :D
Jane i was not prepared to paint. I use colors and brushes for kids! hahhahaha BUT i make changes. Colors are similar. Not the same. I won' t say now because it' s a surprise for you hahahhhha OMG i feel happy, just like a little kid. Thank you from my heart for everything you do for all the people who follow you. THANK YOU :*
A surprise for me?! I'm so excited :D I can't wait to see, Ria
I have no MARS BLACK. Will Payne Grey, or just normal Black work?
great. can I use medium also for oil color?
Thank you, Ayesha! No, acrylic mediums are to only be used with acrylic. However, the matte medium makes the acrylic paint work a little like oil paint, so oil paint on its own is fine :)
Thank you Jane. You are best teacher. I searched many videos on youtube for learning, no one is is like you. I'm happy that I found you
Ayesha R Thank you so much, friend. I'm glad you did too
can we use any type of acrylic colour..???
Tnks a loott tnks
Thank you, Zaki!
Me gustaría que pintaras "noche estrellada" de Van Gogh...
¡Hola Daniella! Tengo una pintura basada en "Starry noche, " pero tal vez algún día haremos una más cercana a la original. Aquí es el que tengo ahora :) ruclips.net/video/_tl2NTFU2EQ/видео.html
Hello
my question is that am I allowed to paint the scream and sell?
I'll take that beautiful, greetings from chile. I want'll paint a dog or a face
Thank you, Josue!!
I Love this painting. However, I DO have to do that face over again lol He also looks like a ghost as you can see ridges of rail going thru his body. Can I some how scrape paint off the canvas or really load up paint for his clothes?
lol, it's ok if he looks like a ghost! You can see my rails too. I'm not worried about it, but yes, you can just apply the paint for his clothes a little thicker.
I hope this isn't too inappropriate but watching that Matte medium work is like paint porn 😂 I need to get some!
Hahaha!!!! Yes you do. It's magical stuff :D
Can I paint it without having any medium
I love You ❤😘😍
Well thank you! :D
