Wow!! I would not be able.to even lift some of yours!! 😁 You are an awesome grower!! It made my day seeing the hummingbird 😊😊 (my favorite bird). Thanks for sharing 👍 😀
I always get excited when you show Fong Cing, but this time I nearly fell out of my chair!! You've grown it into a baseball bat! Cannot wait to see how it blooms for you this year. I am checking on my cooperi twice as often since you said they are prone to sudden death last week. 😆
I'm really hoping for a huge show on the Fong Cing this year! I was hoping for two simultaneous spikes like you got, but looks like I'll have to settle for one right now! Hopefully the flowers are male!
@@SVKLOrchids Stephen , how much slow release fertilizer (20-20-20) would you put in a pot of 2 liters please . Is slow release dangerous if you put too much ? thanks
@@augustin97410 Unfortunately, each fertilizer can require different amounts so I couldn’t make a recommendation. Also, my metric knowledge of volumes has gotten rusty since I left Canada in 1996! 😅 Generally, the directions on the bottle are accurate for Catasetums. Cut the fertilizer in half for other orchids like Cattleyas. Any fertilizer can technically burn your plants, but slow release seems less likely to do so, assuming the pellets don’t drop all the fertilizer at once in high (happens with nutricote).
@@SVKLOrchids thank you vey much. The only one catasetum that I have (very difficult to find this orchid in my island) is growing very fast , I water the plant as much as I can and I put 2 tea spoon of 20-20-20 slow release fertilizer for a 2 liters pot . We're in winter here and the plant is very beautiful . It has about 4 hours of direct sun per day ; I falled in love with this orchid and watched nearly everything concerning this orchid on you tube. So I will follow your precious advice ; Thanks
I never thought I'd get so hooked on growing catesetum-type orchids. With a few more on order, they will now make up the largest group in my collection. I'm addicted for sure! Most of mine, however, are little babies compared to yours -- with respect to the number of growth seasons you've experienced. No spikes last year for me but this year is looking very promising 🤞🏽 After switching to the PET method, all of them are really flourishing. Now I need to try that Jim's Purely Organic fertilizer to see if that will boost them even further. Thanks for the recommendation and another excellent video!

Nice wall of lettuces from distance lol, omg that Fong Cing bulb is massive. I feel your frustration on that stunted growth of one of your schunkii. 3 years ago I sprayed most of my Catasetinae orchids with some systemic and most of them grew much much smaller stunted egg-shapped growths for next 2 years. At least thats what I think that happened. This year finaly most of them look like will have new growths bigger than previos 2 year ones. Plus I told you about my 2 Cycnodes Junbo Micky on Facebook. Orchids can be sooo temperamental Drama Queens lol
On the topic of waking up later, it is fascinating how fast some of them can grow compared to others. Catasetum spitzii was my last plant to wake up, significantly later than the Mormodes (I think there was three months between them), and to look at all of the younger plants you can't see any significant difference between their maturity at this point. (while the older, more established plants are noticeably near maturity)
Very interesting observation! I wonder if that’s related to rainy season for each species? For example, maybe spitzii has a short rainy season and needs to grow fast? I need to look it up in Holst’s book!
Back here again , ex Taiwan , got a bunch of plants . Am fine with waiting for a few years to flower , Where to get clean charcoal ? Do like plants in old plastic bottles . Maybe later . good for a vanda . For now , in moss , bigger plants get more barrk and moss. Most have new growths , heading into our winter / dry time . ' have humidity on my side , bare root until potted . Saved transport weight . Came home with 45 kgs of plants from all over . Tw and Vn -)
Good morning Stephen, I enjoyed this video, I have a lot to learn about catasetums this is my first year, and your video shows me what I can expect in the months to come. Do you make your own wire suspensions ? I am amazed to see that you grow them in ordinary garden cypress mulch, here in Canada our mulch is cedar mulch, do you know if catasetums would grow in cedar mulch ? Thanks Stephen.
Hi Andre, I do make my own wire suspensions! Here is the video I made on the topic: ruclips.net/video/LWp58vSqY0o/видео.html As for the cedar mulch, I am hesitant to say yes or no on that question. I know that pine trees (as a group) can have some tar in their bark which is not great for orchids without some treatment. I'd hate to recommend cedar mulch without knowing more! Do any of the growers in your area use it for other orchids?
Hi Stephen, thank you for your video, great information and I love how detail you are. Question-I just got a cyrtopodium punctatum and I have no idea how to take care of it. Could you tell me? During the growing time, should I do daily watering? When should I stop watering? When should I fertilize? I live in Southern California. Thank you!
Hmmmm…. I’m not sure what else to do since I got the microphone. I’ll check the iPhone settings to see if I can change the levels in some way. Thanks for letting me know! I assume you’re not the only person having a tough time hearing this video.
Hi Stephan, just got my first cycnoches , cycnoches warscewiczii and I'm over the moon since it has a nubin which I think would be a spike. It came to me without leaf but the leaves been cut off. What do you think I should do, water or not to water?
I am new to this type of orchids. Purchased from SVO. He told me not to repot. Roots are growing well but may get over crowded soon. I live in Southeast KY. I have not taken them outside yet. Can you give me some tips. Thank you.
Just got some young plants from SVO last month. Is it too late to repot into PET method or should I wait until next growing season? The roots are growing out of the bottom and seem to be draining slower (not sure if that means they are potbound?) Defenitely having to water 2x per day. Also most of mine are the mini catasetums/clowesums...when I repot should I stay with the 16oz water bottle size pots?
I also got some plants from SVO a month or two and ago and will wait until spring 2022 to repot. That way this seasons roots are left unharmed. You can add a shallow dish under the plants to increase water to the plants. You’ll want the water dish to stay shallow enough that it doesn’t reach the spag and keep it soaking wet.
@@SVKLOrchids thank you for your reply! I WAS thinking of cutting the bottom out of the seedling pots, removing packing peanuts, stuff additiinal sphag moss up there,, and set it in a small container of leca...lol. Almost PET method 🤣🤣.... BUT I'll do what you said and wait til spring.
Stephen: Tks for vids. I got four catasetums and delayed repotting waiting for pots to arrive. I have pots now, but is it too late? I looked at roots and they are long; some dried out. They have big, green leaves. Can I pot them up now? The media is almost like dirt now. Tks for any response. I live in Miami and it is very rainy now.
Mb but more rotting might continue….which is worse? More rot or repotting now-if I repot now, what is the worst that could happen? No flowers-I don’t mind. Pbs shriveling and they lose leaves?
Honestly, I’ve only grown a few of these and the summer blooming species are still a bit mysterious to me! I’ll do one eventually, but not quite yet! Great idea though.

Some do, some don’t. It really depends on the species or the hybrid!

It’s a powder that will wash away, so I have to put it in the baskets to form a little rock of slow release fertilizer.
