MKG is a Female, Not a Male
Mecha-King Ghidorah’s success in the war against the Vortakk and SpaceGodzilla could not be held as an overstatement with the effectiveness of Kaiju cyborgs. This led to the GDF pushing the United Nations to create a bill called, Project: Frankenstein, which would fund the production of newer cyborg models. The GDF quickly received their funding and immediately began exterminating certain Kaiju to be used as templates for the newer models.
Many kaiju including Anguirus, Rodan, King Caesar, Megaurius, Orga, and Manda were killed and their bodies recovered for the project. Mothra, sensing the Kaiju’s pain, formed an alliance with Godzilla in order to stop the GDF from killing any more Kaiju. Mothra then spread across the planet and communicated with other remaining Kaiju asking for their help while Godzilla marched towards the GDF main base in Tokyo.
After arriving in Tokyo, Godzilla was met with fierce resistance from the new Mecha’s the GDF had created. Before the GDF could kill Godzilla, Mothra joined the fray with Battra, Titanosaurus, Megalon, Baragon, Varan, and the recently defunct Jet Jaguar. Tokyo would become the first testing ground against this new Earth Defender threat.

Epilogue idea:
"A stroke of luck and genius lead to GDF turning the defeated King Ghidorah into one of their own. The destroyer of worlds went on to protect one. But some at GDF wondered why stop there? Capturing a weakened Godzilla and Rodan, they powered them up and controlled them with battle armor. Then the bodies of monsters killed by the chaos of the crystals, Zilla, Komoebas, and Kumunga, were given Ghidorah's treatment. But the ethical and political implications of GDF's expanding arsenal would become a fiercely debated topic. Especially when some argued that all monsters should join Mecha-King Ghidorah at GDF."

Fun fact, if you play as MG or MKG and you use the shield on Megalon's napalm, they damage you and Megalon as well, but they don't make you stop.

Loved playing this game so much as a kid and MKG was one of my favorite monsters simply because he was a cyborg 3 headed dragon. Its just a damn shame that in Unleashed he basically was King Ghidorah without the extra health cell and a bunch of extra weaknesses in exchange for the tasers and shield which felt way worse than in Save the Earth simply due to the nature of the game with beam attacks and comboes being much weaker. In Save the Earth he got some nice changes from normal King Ghidorah in the form of his melee while in Unleashed its all copy pasted. Even his theme is an afterthought with it being copypasted main menu theme though amusingly enough this gives him the best theme in the game due to it being some kickass metal.
Most objections to the Mecha King Ghidorah project were originally of cost vs effectiveness, but after MKG defeated Spacegodzilla and saved the Earth, nobody was worried about its effectiveness. The new set of complaints were about the ethics of resurrecting dead kaiju, as the rampancy of Kiryu years before had left a sour taste in the mouth of most. The problem that nobody had realized, however, was that the crystal energy had supercharged the regeneration of the fleshy parts of MKG. Within a year of defeating Spacegodzilla, MKG had grown out of his cyborg parts, returning as the new and improved Grand King Ghidorah. With no miracle machine to defeat the new threat, humanity had to hope that Godzilla would be able to take it down.
King Ghidorah and His cyborg self are actually two of my favorite monsters, So when I get this I'll play them first.

Thanks for this playthrough from your brother, SuperGodzillaGaming! He used Mecha-King Ghidorah pretty effectively. Also, the part where MKG got stuck in the falling animation position in the Big Trouble mission was funny.
By the way, I have a question for you. Why did the developers decide to replace automatic energy recharging with manual energy recharging? It's tedious, and you would think that people playing this game would really like to see monsters fight without their recharging animations constantly coming up.
No idea for the energy recharge. I can only guess they wanted to innovate on the way energy was handled for the sake of innovating (just like how they got rid of traditional health bars in favor of health cells), but some things are best left the way they are for a reason.
Makes me want to watch the Godzilla vs King Ghidorah 1991 movie again.

How would you rank mecha king ghidorah among the other monsters? And would you prefer him over the original?
MKG is quite great. His force field blocks projectiles, which is super helpful, and he has the reusable tasers, which can set up for some very effective combos. Being able to fly in place and use his triple beams from all 3 heads is also extremely potent. But the tasers and force field really set him apart from his non-mecha counterpart. I don't really play him much, though he was one of my faves in GSTE.

He's fine, some of his stiff animations are a little distracting, but he's a pretty competent fighter. Not as fun as his GDAMM/GSTE versions, though.

How come Mechagodzilla 1 is alien while 2 and 3 is gdf?
Mechagodzilla 1 was created by the invading aliens, while MG2 and MG3/Kiryu were developed on Earth.

How do you change factions in this game? I want to convert Mecha Ghidrah and Space Godzilla to the aliens.
In this case, you "simply" need to just do things that the Aliens approve of. To become an Alien, you must fight (and defeat) monsters carrying Power Surges, as well as destroy GDF units that appear across the stages. However, you can take all but one Power Surge - if you collect all Power Surges, you'll be locked into the "Tyrant" ending, where you are on no one's side.
For Earth Defenders, you must "save" monsters that are corrupted by Power Surges by destroying the giant colored crystals. Destroying the blue crystals that appear near the edges of the stages is something they also like.
For GDF, you must prevent as much destruction to a city as possible. You gain a pretty substantial faction bonus for them once the day ends and you haven't destroyed a lot.
Mutants are the easiest - simply destroy absolutely all buildings in your way. I find myself doing this very often, not so much for the faction allegiance, but because building destruction gives plenty of points for the store!
