I thought about a 3" lift w/ 33's but fortunately very early on getting into off roading Jeeps, many told me, their TJ became very sluggish going from just 32's to 33's in addition to a domino effect of needing additional expensive parts. And I'm glad I listened! Because I drove a TJ with this set up and it didn't have that low end torque and was very slow off the line. And most of them returned to 32's while some fell for the aftermarket bait, very expensive bait. I get many who want to know what is the perfect build. Which is not easy to answer because everyone does different things with their Jeep. But I would like to share mine since my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn drives and handles absolutely amazing on and off road. Keep in mind, I am NOT a rock crawler, although I don't go out seeking rock crawling it's still a lot of fun encountering them on the trail and knowing the TJ can handle it. I'm an adventurer who takes the family beach wheelin, beach camping, surf fishing, and we hit fun, moderate trails in the fall and winter getting to our favorite fishing holes and camp sites. Which is why the build is for what's near and for what we do, nothing was put on this TJ unnecessarily for show. I see too many "spotless Jeeps" with 33's - 38's. As long as you have good off road instincts and common sense, a modest, high quality build will allow you and your family to have a lot of fun! All in, I'm at $25k with my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn. And I can honestly say build wise, I'm done!! I might Raptor line it since the TJ has a few rough paint spots and won't ever have to worry about off road pinstriping again. The best part is, this TJ not only keeps up, but outperforms a lot of these $40k - $75k JK's & JL' s. Due in part to people's inexperience and just "over building". The '05 TJ has a modest build, yet is extremely capable, durable and best of all, affordable. I encourage any Jeeper to search for a rust free TJ 4.0 I6, preferably stock, 3.73's w/ LSD and a Dana 44. And to use my build as a "guide". But I highly recommend this build for anyone who is an adventurer, not a rock crawler. Best of all, it will eliminate you from chasing your tail, and the aftermarket will have one less "just empty every pocket" victim out there! Absolutely perfect for the 4.0 I6. Most importantly, be honest with yourself, build your TJ for what you will be using it for. And know YOU CAN do great trails and much more with just a 2" lift and 32" ko2's or MT's! DO NOT let the aftermarket pushers fool or shame you into thinking you "need" 33" - 40" tires and a 5" lift to wheel. That's 🦬💩! They know full well, once they get you at 33's, it's a freaking cash cow for them! Because you just embarked on their multi thousand dollar build conveyor belt. And it's 100% unnecessary for moderate wheelin'! Your axles, drive train, drive shafts, engine, gearing and a host of a lot of other stuff now "needs" to be upgraded. Great comment - Good info for all to see. We also went down to 33s on the red 07. The problems have stopped. Not real sure the 35s were messing everything up but it sure looks like it.
Before I LS Swapped mine, I re-geared to 488's and it made a HUGE difference! I could do 70 easy! it was like adding another cylinder. 33's on a 2.5 puts a strain on the engine. I want to say I paid 1200$ parts and labor from 4Wheels Parts. They did a great job.
I had such a big battle mentally about going for my stock 255s to either a 265 or 285 tire on a 2017 Jeep. I got to say the biggest difference between the 265 and 285 was an inch with and height but I'm so glad that I went with the 265s I got my mileage and the Cooper 80s have worked just fine.
Well with it at 25 years old now we may do a restoration with a more classic look. Thinking AC would be a great thing to put in as well. It gets hot in the summer.
I have a Ranger 2000 here in Brasil it was available with Diesel 2.5 engine and 4x4. I am having the same problem bought with 33". It is incredibly weak at times. I thinking about switching to 31

Just put a set on a 84' Ford Bronco 2. It has the 2.8 liter, V6 Cologne German engine. Looks great, rides great and I still have 5th gear... Only paid $511.00 for 4 tires!
That's the best part. The price is right even when you get into 35s. They have held up good so far. I had issues with some bad ball joint and that wore out the 2010 front tires. Fixed the ball joints and got two new front tires. Now I have two matching spares.
Just watched your video I had to downgrade almost a year ago to the 31" patagonias and have to say I love the change from a 33" BFG because of my 2.5 but did some engine mods and doing 70+ in 5th gear 4th is like a sports car lol
I went from a 2-door 97 TJ with the 4 cyl, 33s, 2in lift with the 5 speed manual to a 04 WJ Grand Cherokee with the 4.7l HO, 545 RFE, 32" tires and 3 inch lift. WJ is a whole different beast. Comfortable, faster, a lot more power (330 ft-lbs torque), roomier, and just more capable overall. It is heavier and has a longer wheelbase, but I have her twin-locked with auto - lockers.

Yeah I can hear how your RPM’s easily rev very nice from the shift of a gear to how the RPM’s increase that’s the way it’s supposed to be. 31’s are the correct size. Good for you finding the better size even if it’s a smaller tire. Patagonia are very good tires.
I just dropped the 35s off the 2007 and most of my issues are gone. I got 6th gear back. Till I get the gears all changed out I will just stick with the smaller tires for now.

Thank you, my son often has one of the Jeeps and lives south of St Cloud. I am still happy with the Patagonia's. They handle water on the road without pulling to the side. So far so good.
Yes I got a 94 2.5L and about 9 years had to go from 33's to 31's, but I love my YJ, great memories, so I can't get rid of it, so I might have to do a motor swap or regear!!
Same here, Randi says that's her favorite Jeep. In the next few years we will pass it on to my son and grandkids. They are with us on occasion. They hold their value.
@@FloridaJeepRides I ran 33s on my cj7 and loved them. I ran a baja bug on 31 inchs 2 wheel drive and went through stuff peeps couldn't believe. Unless your going over rocks I think 31 inchs will get you through most obstacles.
I just want to say: It doesn't matter whether you re-gear or not. I don't know how bad was yours but mine also loses a lot of power up hill and can barely keep on 65 on regular-flat highway. So, do you think it would do any difference now to downgrade to 31's when I already re-geared? And do you have an amazon link for this tires but the all terrain version? Well lets just say for me it worked, if you can find a buddy who will let you switch tires for a test drive that is the best way to find out. For me I was willing to take the chance and it worked. When we bought it with the 29" all terrains I drove home at 65 to 70. It felt like I was drivin on the edge of disaster. I will be taking it down to Judd to do trail testing before the event with the Orlando Jeep Club. We will see, going to do some moderate trails.

you have an exhaust leak or you need to replace that muffler with something else. I have the 2.5L engine also and put on the magnaflow exhaust and sounds good. something definitely sounds off with the exhaust currently.
We are running a Rough Country 2.5 spring lift. When I got the Jeep I changed all the breaks, springs, shocks, and U joints. We also put a 1" transfer case drop kit in to address the pinion angle.

2.5 liter tj, checked the tag on the pumpkin. Says 410, bought a set of wheels and tires off a 2017 rubicon.measuring tape says 32" I think 10" wide. Not much difference between these and the 28 s I used to run. 12.5 tires get heavy quick
If the gearing is right it will work good. Even when I could get up to 60 - 65 it felt like I was driving on the edge. For now its got some small shoes and may stay closer to the stock look. I still have all the bumpers if I ever wanted to take it back to 1995. Never sell a Jeep, you always remember them. Stay safe and ride free.
I have a 94 yj with the 2.5 5 speed and 4:10 gears , I went from a 35x12.50r18 to a 265/75/16 and the power difference is amazing , I can do 65-70 in 5th gear . Of course I have cold air intake n full exhaust, bigger injectors and throttle body spacer so that helps some
We had 33s for almost 4 years and wheeled with no issues. 4 low was great, it was just the drive to location was 55mph. Soon this Jeep will be passed on to one of the grand kids, its a great way to start off the love for Jeeps.
Even 31s on the 4.0 sucks with 3 speed auto and 3:07 gears. I'm searching for a D44 with 4:10 gears and a matching front to hopefully help me out and be able to upgrade to 33s
I got a 1989 Suzuki sidekick 1.6 and the jump to 32" tires didn't feel to bad had 30x9.5 when I got it. I don't go over 70 anyways she likes to shake a bit XD.
I've run 31x10.50 mostly AT's all sorts on my 60series Land Cruiser I've owned for 24years and has done 700.000 km's on the engine, not a new one! Yeah, no kidding. With some it's like driving with the handbrake on. I've now got 33x12.50 MT's on the thing now, same thing with some. But I've found that it's more the tread on the tyre that makes the difference. The tyres I now run are a "Comforcer CF3000", 33x12.50-15" MT probably a Chinese make. But I lose very little if any power compared to good 31's, very similar fuel eco too, taking into account the difference in ratio and Speedo discrepancy. No flats btw, have done many Aussie outback trips on those, no problems with my loaded nearly 3metric ton vehicle.
@@FloridaJeepRides side note, I do agree with you about smaller tires. I had a 6cyl CJ on 33" Mickey Thompsons and hated the ride. Crazy road noise, slow off the line, weak top speed, long breaking, bump steering all over the place. Looked cool, drove terribly. Currently have a 4cyl TJ daily driver on Goodyear Wrangler 255/75/15's that's quick and agile on and off road, in city traffic, in the woods and mud. Doesn't look badass but performs so much better.
I bought a 95 2.5 liter YJ with 33” tires, 3” body lift and 2” shackles. Sits up pretty high and is a slug. But, it’s all about looks, and I look super bad ass. Just kidding. I need to basically remove all the mods.
You had 33's with a 4cyl !? I had 31's on my 4 cyl tj and in a strong head wind I'd be lucky if I could hit 60. I actually got pulled over headed to corpus one time because I was going too slow. I told him I was going as fast as I could. Not a good highway cruiser at all even with 31's.
@@FloridaJeepRides i have the dreaded 2.5L auto. I won’t spend the money on a re-gear, I don’t think it’s worth it in an auto. I just accept its a slow toy and trailer anywhere far away. It’s currently my daily driver with 29’s and does just fine.
Well bigger tires help off road with a bigger foot print and more clearance. If I had a 4.0 it probably would be fine. I had the 33s for several years and it did good off road. But getting to a trail ride meant a top speed of around 55mph. For now she's got pep and I can wheel with the 07 with 35s.

That Thrush muffler... man I hate it. Too loud. The drone sound just make it where I cant hear much. It's fine at Idle and slow low rpm driving, but if you give it gas you sound like a rice burner cow. Another change is coming.
That is my first line to anyone looking for a Jeep... don't buy a 2.4l... unless you are never going to modify it or take it off road. Spend the extra money and get a 4.0
I think perhaps if they still were 12.5 wide int may have not made the difference. If you don't care about how slow it drives on road, then take a slow ride out to a trail and put it in low and have fun. The 33s always worked good off road. But the ride to where ever the trail was took awhile at 55 mph.
If everyone had 31s then there would not be ruts made by 37s... it all depends on gearing. I did fine off road with. 2.5l 95 but suffered on the Hwy. The JK did well with 33s and had no issues- now with 35s it’s has less Hwy and not enough crawl for rocks. Round town and down basic trails and I love the 31s. Out at Judd there is some places and trails it could not go. Lockers do wonders, and a winch can pull you free.
We have 3 Jeeps and they are set up differently. Depending on what your gears are and engine size. Putting 33s on a 2.5l with stock gears will cost you 5th gear on the highway. Off road in low range we did fine. Bigger tires require more power, more power requires stronger drive train and better breaks. Having a daily driver on 31s is great. Having 35 on the main trail Jeep is great for trails but not so much on the highway.
Its a jeep not a lambo...add 200 hp or a bunch of gear...put motor....blower...they make belt drive blower 3 grand go from 70 hp to almost 300 hp....or put sbc in it....u wanna do 80 on interstate but a car

Yes I like the 33s way better and the look is not as good, a smaller foot print for now. My son is using it and just drives mostly on the road. Next round of tires will be back to 33s with a re gear. Got to let them wear out for now. I miss the bigger tires and it always did well off road.
Ohhh I have thought about that many times. When people ask about buying a YJ the first thing I tell them is don't get a 4 cylinder and make sure it has AC. Don't get me wrong its great for tooling around but if I could It would be like Feelin Froggy.
If I had the power I would have 35s on it but until I make a gear change this will have to do. It made a good difference on the road, and I probably have a better chance of getting stuck...
As the tires wear out the next tires will be back. I wish I had gotten a 4.0 but its with my son for now. If I could I would re gear, drop a bigger motor and transmission and some dana 44s.... if I had bunches of money. More then likely it would be cheaper to just go get a new YJ that is done. Watching old videos with this Jeep makes me miss driving it. It is staying in the family, NEVER sell a Jeep, if you do you will always regret it. even 25 years later.... poor old 1981 CJ.

it's a 1995 YJ - with a 2.5l 4 cylinder - But someday I will add a TJ to the lineup.
Re-gearing the axles is the answer... it’s just much more expensive than a set of knock off tires
Soon - We just have to wear them out a bit. Poor squirrels, they just did not want to get past 60mph.

I’ve always like the smaller tire. I have 31x 10.5 iron man mud terrain tires and a 304 v8. Plenty of umph.
We have a 2.5 in the YJ so no Umph.....
The 31s are doing well. I led trails at Jeepin with Judd this year and had no issues. So glad to have 5th gear back.

The Patagonia milestars are awesome tires. I run them on my cj and have been really pleased.
I still have the 35s for the red Jeep and the 31s on the 95 YJ.
Cool. Power improvement and can still go through anything.
I loved the size of the 33s and will miss them, but we wheel with others most of the time so its no big deal if I get stuck.

I just want to say: It doesn't matter whether you re-gear or not. I don't know how bad was yours but mine also loses a lot of power up hill and can barely keep on 65 on regular-flat highway. So, do you think it would do any difference now to downgrade to 31's when I already re-geared? And do you have an amazon link for this tires but the all terrain version? Well lets just say for me it worked, if you can find a buddy who will let you switch tires for a test drive that is the best way to find out. For me I was willing to take the chance and it worked. When we bought it with the 29" all terrains I drove home at 65 to 70. It felt like I was drivin on the edge of disaster. I will be taking it down to Judd to do trail testing before the event with the Orlando Jeep Club. We will see, going to do some moderate trails.

I have a Flowmaster Exhaust system on my 2000 TJ. I like the sound,.....and it's easy to have a conversation in the Jeep.

you have an exhaust leak or you need to replace that muffler with something else. I have the 2.5L engine also and put on the magnaflow exhaust and sounds good. something definitely sounds off with the exhaust currently.
Yes - I changed out the muffler and it sounds better... I may put a stock system back in.
Any noticeable difference in ride quality (especially when aired down)?
Yes- it rides much better on the road. Aired down it still works good. The foot print is smaller but for what we do it works well.
Love the tires, what is the inch's of your lift kit?
We are running a Rough Country 2.5 spring lift. When I got the Jeep I changed all the breaks, springs, shocks, and U joints. We also put a 1" transfer case drop kit in to address the pinion angle.

It gave it a nice lift and fit the 33s I had ... sort of. But it was way better then the old tired spring that it came with.

Are those 31s true to size I have them in 315/70-17 and there barely 34" tall
I have seen this happening a lot lately. You order 35s and get 34.3s They are just under 31s.

2.5 liter tj, checked the tag on the pumpkin. Says 410, bought a set of wheels and tires off a 2017 rubicon.measuring tape says 32" I think 10" wide. Not much difference between these and the 28 s I used to run. 12.5 tires get heavy quick

I got 35s on my 4 cyl tj. I drive highways all the time and it seems to be okay. Idk if there is a difference between the 25L in the tjs and yjs
If the gearing is right it will work good. Even when I could get up to 60 - 65 it felt like I was driving on the edge. For now its got some small shoes and may stay closer to the stock look. I still have all the bumpers if I ever wanted to take it back to 1995. Never sell a Jeep, you always remember them. Stay safe and ride free.
I have a 94 yj with the 2.5 5 speed and 4:10 gears , I went from a 35x12.50r18 to a 265/75/16 and the power difference is amazing , I can do 65-70 in 5th gear . Of course I have cold air intake n full exhaust, bigger injectors and throttle body spacer so that helps some
The difference that it made was amazing. Eventually I will put in some different gears but for now it does well.

I had 31s on my 2.4 tj for a decade. It’s a good size tire.
It’s been working well. A friend borrowed it for a day and said it was a peppy little Jeep.
So I can put 33 tires in jeep YJ 4.0 6 cylinder
I would have kept the 33s with the 2.5 but you should be good. Gearing makes all the difference.

We had 33s for almost 4 years and wheeled with no issues. 4 low was great, it was just the drive to location was 55mph. Soon this Jeep will be passed on to one of the grand kids, its a great way to start off the love for Jeeps.

Even 31s on the 4.0 sucks with 3 speed auto and 3:07 gears. I'm searching for a D44 with 4:10 gears and a matching front to hopefully help me out and be able to upgrade to 33s

I got a 1989 Suzuki sidekick 1.6 and the jump to 32" tires didn't feel to bad had 30x9.5 when I got it. I don't go over 70 anyways she likes to shake a bit XD.
We had a guy come to the office at work with a real nice Suzuki that was set perfect for off roading. They are like mini Jeeps.
I've run 31x10.50 mostly AT's all sorts on my 60series Land Cruiser I've owned for 24years and has done 700.000 km's on the engine, not a new one! Yeah, no kidding. With some it's like driving with the handbrake on. I've now got 33x12.50 MT's on the thing now, same thing with some. But I've found that it's more the tread on the tyre that makes the difference. The tyres I now run are a "Comforcer CF3000", 33x12.50-15" MT probably a Chinese make. But I lose very little if any power compared to good 31's, very similar fuel eco too, taking into account the difference in ratio and Speedo discrepancy. No flats btw, have done many Aussie outback trips on those, no problems with my loaded nearly 3metric ton vehicle.
Its still doing well. For the last year or so it has been in the hands of my son and the grandkids.

@@FloridaJeepRides side note, I do agree with you about smaller tires. I had a 6cyl CJ on 33" Mickey Thompsons and hated the ride. Crazy road noise, slow off the line, weak top speed, long breaking, bump steering all over the place. Looked cool, drove terribly.
Currently have a 4cyl TJ daily driver on Goodyear Wrangler 255/75/15's that's quick and agile on and off road, in city traffic, in the woods and mud. Doesn't look badass but performs so much better.
I bought a 95 2.5 liter YJ with 33” tires, 3” body lift and 2” shackles. Sits up pretty high and is a slug. But, it’s all about looks, and I look super bad ass. Just kidding. I need to basically remove all the mods.
I did like the way the 33s looked and it did fine off road... getting even a small hill though would require down shifting.
Should went with Procomp xtreme mt2. I got my wheels and tires for 1500 bucks. And that was for 5 of them. And I love it.

You had 33's with a 4cyl !? I had 31's on my 4 cyl tj and in a strong head wind I'd be lucky if I could hit 60. I actually got pulled over headed to corpus one time because I was going too slow. I told him I was going as fast as I could. Not a good highway cruiser at all even with 31's.
Been there. On the way to Jeep Beach everyone was passing us on I-4. She may be slow but she gets me where I want to go.
There's an upgrade to fix that power problem with the 33's... It's called a Bronco. ;)

If you regear it would be fine. Even with a 4 banger. For what we use it for it does well.
@@FloridaJeepRides i have the dreaded 2.5L auto. I won’t spend the money on a re-gear, I don’t think it’s worth it in an auto. I just accept its a slow toy and trailer anywhere far away.
It’s currently my daily driver with 29’s and does just fine.

Well bigger tires help off road with a bigger foot print and more clearance. If I had a 4.0 it probably would be fine. I had the 33s for several years and it did good off road. But getting to a trail ride meant a top speed of around 55mph. For now she's got pep and I can wheel with the 07 with 35s.

That Thrush muffler... man I hate it. Too loud. The drone sound just make it where I cant hear much. It's fine at Idle and slow low rpm driving, but if you give it gas you sound like a rice burner cow. Another change is coming.

I love the 95 YJ and still take it out for a ride. I may take it up to Hard Rock north of Ocala with the 31s just to test it fully.

I think perhaps if they still were 12.5 wide int may have not made the difference. If you don't care about how slow it drives on road, then take a slow ride out to a trail and put it in low and have fun. The 33s always worked good off road. But the ride to where ever the trail was took awhile at 55 mph.

If everyone had 31s then there would not be ruts made by 37s... it all depends on gearing. I did fine off road with. 2.5l 95 but suffered on the Hwy. The JK did well with 33s and had no issues- now with 35s it’s has less Hwy and not enough crawl for rocks. Round town and down basic trails and I love the 31s. Out at Judd there is some places and trails it could not go. Lockers do wonders, and a winch can pull you free.
We have 3 Jeeps and they are set up differently. Depending on what your gears are and engine size. Putting 33s on a 2.5l with stock gears will cost you 5th gear on the highway. Off road in low range we did fine. Bigger tires require more power, more power requires stronger drive train and better breaks. Having a daily driver on 31s is great. Having 35 on the main trail Jeep is great for trails but not so much on the highway.
Yeah.... People think the 2.4 Cherokee is like this ... NOT even close.... 9 speed.... I think I can do like 125mph on 30s lol.
We don't go out too much in the YJ but will probably take it out this weekend.
Its a jeep not a lambo...add 200 hp or a bunch of gear...put motor....blower...they make belt drive blower 3 grand go from 70 hp to almost 300 hp....or put sbc in it....u wanna do 80 on interstate but a car

I do have bigger tires on the JK and that has opened a bunch of new issues. Bigger tire put stress on all other parts.

Yes I like the 33s way better and the look is not as good, a smaller foot print for now. My son is using it and just drives mostly on the road. Next round of tires will be back to 33s with a re gear. Got to let them wear out for now. I miss the bigger tires and it always did well off road.

Ohhh I have thought about that many times. When people ask about buying a YJ the first thing I tell them is don't get a 4 cylinder and make sure it has AC. Don't get me wrong its great for tooling around but if I could It would be like Feelin Froggy.

As the tires wear out the next tires will be back. I wish I had gotten a 4.0 but its with my son for now. If I could I would re gear, drop a bigger motor and transmission and some dana 44s.... if I had bunches of money. More then likely it would be cheaper to just go get a new YJ that is done. Watching old videos with this Jeep makes me miss driving it. It is staying in the family, NEVER sell a Jeep, if you do you will always regret it. even 25 years later.... poor old 1981 CJ.
