I like your supported at both ends idea. With careful fixturung, you can get a really nicely pair of holes through that casting, parallel in both x and y planes.
what do you mean power tools can't do it? my angle grinder and welder work perfectly for when I need to add back metal when I accidentally grind too much away!

Nice to see you putting together a temporary tailstock. That should improve the finish and consistency of the two headstock bores.
The book has the end of the boring rod completely unsupported... in hindsight, not a great plan.
