    A few helpful tips to add...
    -CarGenerator is meant to be used only with the car engine is running, and the voltmeter should always show 13.5 volts or more so your alternator is happy.
    -the booster cable normally lays between the (semi-closed) hood The hook also prevents the hood from closing to keep the cable from being pinched. This also activates the vehicle warning system that your hood is ajar to help folks not drive away with CarGenerator attached :)
    -the strap should be pulled out behind the handle so it hangs more vertically.
    -a bicycle cable lock through the CarGenerator handle helps as a visual theft deterrent to help secure it.

    It is a good concept, and Jonathan at Car Generator is a good guy. I would rather buy a 200 aH Lifepo4 battery and a 2000W pure sine wave inverter for less than this.

    I've always thought about doing this, so it's interesting to see a product built around it. However, I'd like to see some real testing on different vehicles than just the platitudes on the company's FAQ page. It claims no issues with idling for hours by comparing with cop cars, but those aren't idling with 1000W of load on the alternator. Sedans probably have around a 100A alternator, which is more like 80A at idle, so it will make 1000W, but that's pretty much maxed out.
    I'd probably only want to run something like this when it's cold out (to cool the engine/alternator better), and only for an hour or so intermittently. Anything longer and I'd expect to shorten the life of the alternator drastically. In my younger days, I was one of those 'trunk full of subwoofers' guys, and it was common to blow alternators from the amplifier draw and to swap in high output units.

    Love the idea of quietness :)
    Maybe a person could run some appropriately sized cables to the bed of a pickup or trunk of a car and just put an inexpensive 1000 watt inverter in either place. Would take care of the theft or sabotage issue - plus cost FAR less :)

  • @timsteinkamp2245
    @timsteinkamp2245 12 дней назад

    You were using natural gas so it would be interesting to compare cost per hour to run the truck compared to using natural gas. I think that bigger engine will use much more gas. I find that in generators. The bigger the generator the more gas it uses so buy an engine that gives you the power you need. The truck unit is a good idea to have but if you use it often camping then maybe get a deep cycle battery and a separator or carry a jump starter in case the alternator quits.

    My inverter that I currently use in my truck. Already has 8 gauge wiring going to to my center console? And there is already a high current feeder bus. Going front and back. All I have to do is plug an orange extension cord into the fighter of the 2 front or back. Pigtails that are already live of a 120 V. Soon to have 240 V as well on board for certain things, but it'll be 400 Hz. Aviation equipment will be running on board my truck

    It's interesting and a nice option. It's also $900 for the 1000W version. Well, 1000W if your alternator is up to it. Most are not, especially at idle.
    Very limited use case for this product.
    I'll stick with my 3300W (continuous) gas generator that I paid $200 for (and have to drain the gas after each use).

Anyone have any thoughts on this being worth the money and if there’s anything special to the install? Any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Wonder how this would work with solar as oppose to attaching to a vehicle.

    • @thehomewizard1
      @thehomewizard1 2 месяца назад

      Gooogle
      dc+watts+vs+ac+watts
      Other than that it's really a matter of having enough solar to equal the AC Watt output.
      For instance, my newer fridge uses about 400 watts (as seen in the manual that came with it), so if I had a solar system for 600 watts (allowing losses to get it to the connection & such (like enough sunlight to make 400 + watts, then it's pretty much work alright.
      Theory is there, just gotta find out by real trials.

    I'd say make sure you have a booster pack handy and extra fuel by the time your unit if like other inverters I've had beeps to warn of impending shut down at 10,8 volts its too late to start the vehicle and I don't know what that truck will use of fuel while idling with what mine takes it's a lot but smaller vehicles don't take much my sisters Hyundai we found out by accident that it's not bad one day we we stopped for supper at 300 o'clock after unlocking she parked on the street and came in after 6 I went out to get the vehicle and when I pushed the unlock button it didn't respond and I wondered why until I got closer and realized it was running and the gas gage had barely moved as for mounting the unit I would run the wires inside the cab might be more work but better than realizing that the furnace has stopped and on checking find the unit gone and if you left the vehicle charging it's gone too

    • @diyhvacguy
      @diyhvacguy  2 месяца назад +2

      A car battery has the same warranty regardless what it is used for, but no it’s not bad, nor is it bad to idle your vehicle. Most people that live in large cities sit in traffic for countless hours per week. This is really designed to use while your car is running though, and you can run it much longer at idle than any generator and it’s way quieter. Cheers

      CarGenerator is meant to be used always with the engine running. Make sure the vehicle voltage stays above 13.5 and then you are assured your alternator is functioning perfectly and within range. thanks.

    I don't think I like this idea or running a car/truck's 6 or 8 cyl engine using gasoline that might not be available to refill.
    I prefer the Vtoman jump 1000 or equiv and plugging the furnace etc in to it for short outages, and using a couple of portable solar panels on the jump 1000,and if its a longer outage- recharging the battery with my 1500 watt Powermate inverter generator for an hour or two.

    Eight amps of continuous 120-volt output might power gas-fired furnace since the only load is a fan motor, or a typical residential refrigerator, or something else like that. But it's not going to power a typical residential 5-ton heat pump, or even a typical electric backup heat element. I know you didn't claim it would...I just want to make sure that uneducated viewers don't think this is going to power up their whole house or anything. The average automotive alternator just isn't capable of meeting such a demand.

    • @cargenerator
      @cargenerator 2 месяца назад

      yes you are absolutely right. CarGenerator will easily power any modern GAS or OIL home furnace. The new DC variable speed motors are even more efficient, in our experience they use about 300-400 watts to drive the control circuit and blower fans. ruclips.net/video/9Ni5DCM79vs/видео.html

      IS IDLING BAD? IDLING IS A FACT OF LIFE AND YOU IDLE EVERY DAY
      * First lets define the term: what do vehicle manufacturers count as “idling” ?
      * How much idling is too much? 15 minutes? An hour? Two or three hours? Overnight?
      * 2021 Ford F150 with built in 2000w inverter generator idles for 85 hours continuous on a tank, no problem.
      * Prove it to yourself, connect a vehicle OBD scanner to your car and observe your A) total engine hours and B) your total idle hours.
      * You will notice that EVERY SECOND your engine is running and your vehicle is not moving, adds to the idle time counter. Yep, waiting at a stoplight, stuck in traffic, or staying cool or warm in your vehicle while waiting to pickup the kids from soccer.
      * Every hour you idle (even accumulation as you wait at a stoplight etc) counts as roughly 25 miles of driving.
      * Millions of people around the world idle vehicles every day, sales people, taxis, deliveries, no harm.
      * SUMMARY: of the thousands of hours we run our vehicle engine, a day or two extra occasionally, is not even a drop in the bucket, and no harm at all.
