This is an awesome preview video and I know I'm coming at it two years late but I'm starting to get into the Cotton series and this was a really helpful find! I see you're a fan of Guardian Force, a man of taste! I am looking forward for this collection as well. I like the Cotton series, they're great games, but I have to admit the main reason I want this package is Guardian Force. I had to sell my Saturn copy and then the price skyrocketed, and it was cheaper for me to buy a MODE than paying the insane prices people are charging for this game nowadays. I honestly hope the entire Saturn library gets ported to consoles, because there are so many good games there, and a lot of people just never get to know them.

You're the first RUclipsr I've heard actually talk about the fighting game controls in Cotton, even though they are detailed in the manual. I guess we know that most are either emulating, not reading the manual, or even reading a FAQ. To be fair, you don't really need to (nor is it really an option) in modern games, but this was absolutely vital up until the 128-bit generation. Cheers to you! #shmupsareshooters

That’s pretty odd it’s common knowledge I thought the game used controls like that. Even the hardcore 101 article talks about it. Guess most just don’t care to explore it that deeply. The Saturn was such 2D powerhouse and it shows in these titles. The sprite scaling and rotation effects look super cool and always remind why I love these kind of games.
I recently received my Cotton Reboot and like it a lot but these titles look deep and interesting in their execution and the graphics are so distinctive. The change in gameplay styles between the two Cotton games gives this collection some amazing variety…and as for Guardian Force….no idea how this title passed me by but I can’t wait to play it. Like Soukyugurentai, another Saturn hidden gem and this collection gives people a perfect opportunity to play this rather than shelling out for the originals.

Back in the day, I remember the Cotton games on the Saturn being very hard to get here in the US. The importer that I mainly dealt with got in about five or so copies of 2, and maybe the same for Boomerang when it came out. Employees there snapped them up and they never restocked. Needless to say, I’m all over this release!

I can imagine it was slim picking at the import store. I was always there waiting day one for big releases to grab one before they were gone. I guess when it comes to limited release some things haven't changed all that much. But now the digital option helps out a lot. I don't think I ever got to own either Cotton game on Saturn back in the day when it released.

@@ShmupJunkie I was really into fighting games back then and import prices for most games ended up costing about $100 per game after shipping. My friends and I would put hundreds of hours into each fighting game that came out and shooters, as we called them back then, only were bought when we were committed to playing them thoroughly. We would beat them and then shelve them, which was truly the wrong way to enjoy them. I passed on Silvergun because of this and ended up regretting it. When one of my friends got to Japan in the late 90’s, he to,d me how shooters were everywhere and how limited our exposure was depending on the US magazines like Gamefan to clue us into the greats. I depended on him from then on to tell me what was ‘hot’ in their arcades. Lots of conversations at 3AM because of the time difference on a US Air Force line, which had free international. 🤣

@@54321ZachMr $100 a game? Carts or CD releases? I remember seeing things like Mario 64 go for that in the suburbs. The systems I imported games for were the ones it was mandatory: PCE/Turbo, Saturn and Dreamcast. I had them shipped from a company in Brooklyn. They bought from a distributor and the products were usually roughly the same as the price in Japan. $35-60.

@@robertrada4783 I ordered most of my games from Diehard Gamers Club in California. It started with Street Fighter II on Super Famicom which ran me about $120 with Next Day Air. Over the years, I ordered for basically all consoles except the PC Engine titles. I had a friend that claimed sole authority on that one, as he loved all things for it. He had the Supergrafx at launch with all of the games. We enjoyed Ghouls N' Ghosts the most. Over the years, I imported games for every system. The carts were the most expensive. When disc based imports hit, I want to say the median price for them ran $70-80 and of course $20 for next day air for each. My Neo Geo games I got from NCS out of New York. $250 for Samurai Showdown 2 was the big game for that system. I later moved to Neo CD, and those ran far cheaper at about $60 a title. Load times were a pain on that one, but having the soundtracks on the games to be able to listen in a car were fun.

@@54321ZachMr Ahhhhh, Diehard. They were always pretty pricey. Simultaneously, they were one of the few that advertised and reached out to customers across the country via magazine ads. Those ads weren’t free and I totally get it. If they didn’t exist, A LOT of Americans would never have played Japanese exclusives. NCS happens to be who I was referring to. 👌 I had Neo Geo CD for a a very short while. Those load times were a trip. I remember it not being as bad with games like Metal Slug. It was specifically the fighting games that suffered for inherent reasons. Do I recall correctly that the NGCD control pad wasn’t that good? It’s dawning on me that MOST of my PCE games were “cash in an envelope” purchases from collectors and traders on prodigy bulletin boards and email lists. The good ol’ days.

I really do wish we could get more proper collections of hard to find games like these, especially Saturn games, considering how much of a brick wall Saturn emulation has hit for the past couple years. When I learn to code, I'd hope to one day take a crack at getting a proper emulation project going... but who knows if I'm smart enough...
Anyways, I never realized just how much depth the Cotton games had! I always just thought they were just some charming, fun little cute-em-ups, but it's awesome to know that they have the kind of depth that would give Treasure a run for their money. Now I have to get this collection. Thanks Junkie!

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад

I’m glad it helped you see the games a bit more in depth. A lot of people expect it to be a very basic game so they don’t look into the mechanics even though the original Cotton was complex too. So it makes sense. I’m actually going to be talking about that in my next video on learning to shmup. Properly learning your character and the game’s mechanics before diving into trying to learn the rest of the game and levels. Otherwise it’s like playing it handicapped. Really fun games though and if you do get it I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks man. And yeah, I've found that the biggest obstacle to most in Cotton games is not learning it's systems and playing how it's intended. They are unorthodox shmups and playing them like a normal one makes them a lot harder than designed. The original was like that too, you had to learn the resource management to really make headway with it.

Killer video dude and that green screen works awesome.
Guardian Force is a game I drooled over back in the Saturn days being a PS One owner, it was one of a few Shmups and fighting games I really wished had made their way to PS One, the platform I owned. I’ve never seen Guardian Force game play before your video and love what I see, and am definitely psyched for it on PS4 at some point. Also love that soundtrack, I’m a big Pulp Fiction fan, as I know you are 😎💪🦎
In all honesty Cotton never appealed to me back in the day as one it was on Saturn, which I never owned, and two it looked way to cute 😂, but seeing this video definitely sparks true that old saying “don’t judge a book by it’s cover”. Damn was I wrong to judge it on looks alone 😖. it looks amazing 🤩 and reminds me a lot of Ghouls N Goblins from a sprite and aesthetics perspective. I love the tunes as well and find myself surprised in saying I definitely will pick these up as soon as finances permit. Excellent work my friend and I want that Team Timmee T when it launches 😎💪. What makes me glad most is that I can make a rough day just a bit better for you and provide some entertainment. Making the videos often provides me with a needed distraction and hobby as well. Just a note on this Saturn collection, I measured it having some pretty excessive input delay of 10-12 frames. Much worse than most anything that’s come before. The games are cool but the port work turned out pretty lazy. So maybe hold off if it’s an issue until they patch it. Wouldn’t want you to jump in head first without at least knowing.

Fantastic video per usual, and the editing is top notch. I will say that these games (and most saturn games) actually can be reliably emulated with the Beetle Saturn core on Retroarch. Seems like Cotton Reboot's small hitbox is not as abrupt as it seemed. Since the small hitbox had been since Cotton Boomerang. How ahead of its time were Cotton games again? I think we haven't given Cotton series more credit than it deserves in terms of shmup advancements all the while we talk about CAVE and Raizing.

I honestly didn't realize myself how small it was in Boomerang for the larger characters until this week. Editing my videos and seeing them that way, you can really tell how many shots I swear would have killed me did not. I'm not sure how far back smaller hitboxes in Horis go but it would be interesting to try and trace it back farther and keep track.

While i don't love Timmy, I still think it's a very good approach for those of us that kinda suck at shmups but love the pretty colours and exploding stuff. Can't wait to try Cotton 2!

Definitely a must buy, but I'll probably still play on the Saturn (Pseudo Saturn Kai 😂).
I'm very much a rookie in this series as I just played these for the first time a few months ago. I'm glad we're seeing a lot of classic shmups showing up on these shores lately!
