...So if you're mastering a Pantera song, you could say you hit A New Level?
and you'll have confidence and power. ;)
@@TheArtofGuitar That'll only work if you spend 5 minutes alone.
Underrated comment
@@TheArtofGuitar a vulgar display of power
If you dont it will be heresy
I think there is a step 3.5: Playing with a drum track.
When you are used to play along with your part you can mess up and just easily jump back in.
But with only a drum track thats not always as simple. It is also a really great exercise before playing with an actual drummer.
Also just playing to a metronome without the song playing, so that you really know the song without relying on the song playing. You really know how many times each riff plays, how many beats tests go for, etc.
That "forgetting everything that you just played" is really true,
I played in front of people and as soon as I was done I couldn't even remember how well I played the solo, I guess it is from just being too nervous
Level 69, your band can sing all their instrument’s parts perfectly enough to be an a capella instrumental band. And you can play the vocal parts and precisely pronounce the words on your instruments.
Man oh man, yes. That level 4 is a SHOCK the first time you hit it. I had been playing for YEARS at a very comfortable level 3, and then when I finally got a chance to play with an actual good drummer, I went into it feeling pretty confident, and BOOM, got smacked in the face hard. It's a whole different ball game when the recording of the band isn't there keeping time for you, and you have to do that dance with another living person who's reacting to you the same way you're reacting to them. Another perfect distillation, Mike!
I would add an extra level, 3.5 probably: learning the tiny details. I've played enough covers with many bands to know that musicians tend to learn a part of a song, like a Verse or Chorus, and then play it the exact same way every time that part comes up. But often times there a small variations - might be a different fill in each Chorus for example, or maybe a different picking pattern in the 2nd Verse - that can really make all the difference.
A good example from personal experience would be Iron Maidens The Trooper: when the guitars come back to that iconic riff after the first chorus, the bassline changes slightly, creating a different harmonic outline wich changes the feel of the riff even though the guitars pretty much play the exact same thing as in the intro.

✨😆Mike! Creepy winks, LOL!
✨🎶😜😉🎸🎶😜😉🎸🎶✨
Creepy winks, for dinks with kinks!
LOL!
Remember all the semi-creepy things band mates did onstage with each other back in the 80's?😆😅😆✨
1st move that comes to mind is the thing that the Down Boys (Warrant) did.....the implied BJ move where they'd grab each others head/hair and.....ya know, went all chicken head!😮😮🎸🐔🎸😖😆✨
It feels like I'm perpetually stuck on level 2 for every dang song I've learned.
But Mike it's nice to see that you were doing your best pick up line while up on stage 😂😉😊😁
make up your own songs.
Level 0.5 where you have mastered Air Guitarring the song.
😀
Love your content dude even though I don’t play as much I like to stay connected to the guitar world. I’m also old (54) so you are helping the aged. Thx
Thanks Mike. Good stuff as always. You are the bee's knees.
Another great video Dude!
Been there done that brought back some memories there.....
Mike…I remember telling the band that I don’t think I can pull off all the Rush material live…and I’ll never forget Kurt, our drummer said “its just like playing with the record, only you’re not”…freakin drummers 😳
Hey dude just watched an old CWHN with Sam trippoli .n just watched joey n Lee .agh the good times
Peace cheers for all the lessons .

✨🎶😃Hey, check it out....
I knew a guy who tried to get the ab ink that Phil has (UNSCARRED)
but ended up with (UNSCARED)😱😖✨
Hey, it still sorta-kinda works out I guess.
✨😅😅😅✨
I absolutely love Heart and your videos man
When trying out level 3, I usually find out that the song was faster than I realized!
Whoa....she's beautiful!........I'm talking' about a Yankee Rose! Wa-ha-ha-ha-ha....... the lick that introduced Steve Vai to the world. I think the main level is when you first try to play with a band. Practicing at home is like Army boot camp but performing the songs with 3 or 4 other people is like being on the field under enemy fire. People are generally like 'whoa whoa - wait up - awe man, I totally thought I had that part, wait a second, why is it all of a sudden impossible to play the solo?!? - I had it at home!' Another good measure of progress is If you can go into a large instrument retailer on a busy Saturday afternoon and draw a crowd. It's like the Wild West for guitar players. Crowley, eh? Oh yeah, well here's Painkiller - take that homes. Guy on the Line 6 in the used section comes in with Tornado of Souls. That little disclaimer on your last video saying 'some of you may freak out a bit by this' was on point, and that's coming from someone actually from space (me I meant so there's no confusion). The 4th planet in M Space Hunter Nebula to be exact.
Man, at age 44 I decided to start playing bass again. The first time was about five years as a teenager but no formal training. This after my uncle sent me a pic of his new guitar after he decided to start playing again. Three weeks later I had my first bass. That was 1½yrs ago and today I know the first three Metallica albums, some White Zombie, some Slayer (😐), some Anthrax and a few random metal songs. Probably in all about forty complete songs at level 3.
Honestly, I thought this is all I wanted to achieve (level 3) but recently decided to start researching for vlogging, bass covers and livestreaming. I'm also now interested in guitar repair and maintenance (maybe even more in this area)... But now after watching this, I finally came to terms with a little voice in my head that I have been ignoring. That is finding someone else to jam with. My uncle and I are both from White Bear, North Saint Paul area. Fleck now lives in IL and I live in rural NW WI... Where there's nobody to jam with... Like at all. Maybe I'll have to put some flyers up or an ad in the local paper. IDK though. At now 46, I'm not looking to be a rockstar but rather master my bass.
Thoughts anyone?
Interesting, I’m 43 with no one to jam with in rural WI as well. I’m in Rice Lake.
Wish I knew more musicians to jam with
I saw metallica perform hardwired for the first time live. They said it was after they performed it. It didn’t seem like it. Still somewhat perfect like the other songs they performed.
Which show, where?
This vid is not what I expected but very insightful.... would I be a level 3.5 if I jam along with a backing track I created? Or what about playing live with a backing track, like Buckethead does a lot of the time. By the way if you're curious about what I expected, since you said song mastery I thought of learning the song by ear. First you get the chords, then the rhythm, then you work out the more intricate parts and so on.
Level 8: you're setup to play live with a band, and the drummer doesn't show up, or the guitarist's amp is broken, but you have to play the song/gig there and then or you won't get paid. So you do it and pull it off. Great video, as always! Love your channel! Loved the video on bullying as well, really struck a chord with my girlfriend and me... I have one question though: what does ESP mean? I tried looking it up, but there's about 20,000 acronyms of ESP online.
ESP is a guitar brand!!
like a homing beacon or link or sight
Can you do a video on how to practice songs and get them up to speed? I know practice makes perfect, but I've never really known how to practice in a way that'll get the best results, and other people seem to pick up on them much easier
The way I do it is I focus on the rhythm. But I don't stress about it, I just kinda "dance" to it with my hands. Does it make sense?
A video on how to practice? Just...you know...practice...
I use Guitar pro(you can also use Tux Guitar which is free). I typically download the Guitar Pro tabs, highlight the bars that I need/want to practice and start practicing at a tempo I can follow that is lower then my max, then I set a repeat on the section and set the tempo to increase after X repetitions, I take note at what tempo I start having trouble, stop the loop when I can't follow along at all. Ill set the tempo increase anywhere from 2 to 5 BPM increase per loop.
Then I restart the loop.
Ill set a timer for each part I want to practice and move on to the next one when the timer is over.
Depending on the song, it can take me minutes or months to get up to speed. It's important to practice slow to make sure your technique is on point, but it's important to go above what you are capable off to start getting a feel for it.
Keep a practice log of what you practiced and at what tempo you are at, some days, you will notice your max has increased, some days, you will note a decrease, but your max will increase overtime.
For my practice sessions(technique exercises), I usually write the tab for it in Guitar Pro and follow the same process.
Levi Clay's youtube channel has some good videos about practicing and transcribing with Guitar Pro on his channel.
Keep in mind that downloaded tabs are rarely 100% accurate and that its also important to learn songs by ear as well, a good way to do that is to import the song(mp3) in your Daw(I use reaper) and when you change the BPM in your DAW, it affects the speed of the audio, but not the pitch. Great for learning fast songs and solos.
Seconding not comparing yourself to others, it may seem easier to some people and in some rare cases that may be true but more often than not that person has put in the work to make it easier. People think Dimebag was just pure talent but according to Vinnie he locked himself in his bedroom for a whole summer because his band was going to make him play bass.
I get backing tracks of all my favorite tunes. Zero guitar is left, then I record every part. Left channel rhythm, right channel, fills in stereo then solos. When done I want it as close to the original, on my 160th tune
I wish I could play music with other people
:( I have two friends who play guitar and bass, but they never practice, and it’s not really fun playing when they’re not very good lol
Hey Mike, where's the streams? I haven't seen one pop up in a while! Those streams are awesome by the way.
Thinking tomorrow night. (Wed) :)
I play by myself but I always improvise and if my melody or rhythm falls off beat/pivot, I just go with it success or fail; which is kinda like level 7
I'm a 3.4; just playing along the songs I like. But now that I'm older I see that I thought I knew the song, but I can play better and cleaner now
Do you have any tips on doing fast legato? For example the descending intro in “Peace Sells.”
Check out my Legato vid: ruclips.net/video/O3MBz2lwcMg/видео.html
Good to know I'm not the only one who started over if I botched the song. Is that a perfectionist thing? My brother used to say I was just being a perfectionist when I did that. I do this even when I do other things too. I always think I could better.
I was trying to learn the sweet child o mine solo it is kind of easy in the beginning but some parts as in the little lick slash plays fast
What about showing up to a gig to fill in for the lead guitar player to play 3 sets without any rehearsal ? All I got was the set list 3 weeks in advance. I actually got asked to fill in again !
I feel like once you started getting into live playing the list kind of derails into something else like mastery of a song LIVE. idk bout you but level 4 should be playing the tiny details down to the string choice. Take master of puppets for example, there are details I still miss but I’ve played the damn thing a thousand times (fixed with the details of MoP video you made ;) . Rule 5 should be playing at full speed, all corrections, almost comfortably. But hey I haven’t played live once, what am I even saying? I trust your list! Just thought there were more rules to add
Hey Mike, honest question. How old are you, cause you look great I thought you were in your 20’s.
I'm 74 years young. ;)
I think you should read Mike's reply as what year he was born. 😉
tip to new players, there are two ways to deal with a mistake while playing. Restarting and playing through.
Restarting is good for either new players who have issues just picking up mid section (mid riff, mid chorus, whatever) or when you are trying to nail the rhythm, or melody. Or of course the mistake leads the band to totally loses cohesion.
But if you want to play smoothly, and fast, just play through the mistakes.
I think my level 4 is playing along with a looper, and/or recording the song into a DAW..
I think it's important to record yourself when you are at level 3, to find out if/where you are making mistakes.
Level 8: You're so good, you go to concerts just to flash a cocky smirk at the guitarist because you know how much better you are.
Level three is what I was born for lol
Is level 7 a DRI reference? Jk
It really is the best when you hit that level as a live band. My old band made it there with a handful of our original songs, it was alot of fun being able to improvise and accent the tracks instead of just rushing through them at double speed because of nervousness lol. Once you hit level 7 you can start to work on your delivery and stage presence, unfortunately people seem to pick one or the other and that's probably why so many local bands are either well rehearsed statues or sloppy rock stars
As a drummer I used to think being able to play and song perfectly/fully without any other other music or instruments was really important (its really not). It sucks because I would get all frustrated when I could’t perfectly remember a Metallica or Cheap Trick song etc. Ya live and ya learnnnnn 😁
I am a solo artist but I want a band the only reason I'm hesitant is because the band I used to have would never learn the song and they'd do their own thing, don't get me wrong I love the people who in that band and we're all still best friends but yeah, being a metal solo artist sucks tbh but i get to do what i want ig
Love the white SG...for sale/ trade...
Maybe a video about Yngwie Malmsteen guitar techniques?
🤘🏻🔥
If I warm up, I can play master of puppets pretty well, and I'm trying to learn the solo. It's hard man
Level 8: studio recording. when the tape is rolling there’s a whole different kind of pressure! 😖
I'm a level 3 kingpin 🤣I play tons of songs perfectly (most of the time) in my living room along to the guitar stripped backing tracks, Van Halen, The Police, Rush, Queen, Journey, Metallica etc. but put me on a stage and my fingers nope right out of there 🤣🤣🤣
I'm level 2 on the first solo of Fade to Black. After two weeks I'm about .5 - .75 speed. Just need to work on speed.
Right on
Level 8, you can play the song, start to finish, in different keys...
Level 9, play the song finish to start, all notes in reverse (retrograde)
Level 10, level 9 but every part (verse, chorus etc) is modulated using a different approach for each one.
Level 11- cocaine and prostitutes
@@teresathomley3703 I think a lot of people have that level way out of order 😂
I can only ever get to level 3. No musicians want to play with me 🙃
Same
So what about the many songs I've played more than three times live with a band, but I still use a chart?
Get to learnin's nuber! hehe.
@@TheArtofGuitar well, that is how I learn some of them haha.
Usually just a new song that I had a few days to go through before playing it live
Knowing a song is not being able to play it right, its not being able to play it wrong
Level 3.5 = play it through whilst standing up!
level 2 almost 3 :)
i feel i am level 2, 3-ish. only go over tabs once then i will just try to myself up to speed
I love your guitars sell me one
i just study the tab for like 20 minutes i can’t read tab and play at the same time it’s impossible 😭😭
You should have mastered level 3 already while working on level 1 ;-)
I could never afford real ESP, so my bands have always relied on LTD instead.
Ltd is great man, I think kirk used a LTD
first
great video!

Just go stand at the crossroads. That's what I did. 😁
He wouldn't buy mine. He sent it back.
